Game Director Ion Hazzikostas on Legacy Raid Scaling

Recommended Posts

 53097-the-level-50-mythic-solos-have-beg

A Chinese site asked Ion about Legacy raid scaling, and here's what he had to say.

You can find the whole interview in Chinese here. Swervyq translated the relevant bit about Legacy raid scaling, and Ion said that by the end of Shadowlands, we should be able to kill Legion raid bosses fairly easily, since the principle is to allow for easy soloing of content from two expansions ago.

Q: The routes of certain old raids are very complicated, have you considered adding more teleports? Also people are having difficulty soloing old content, for example even if you have the best gear right now Eonar in Antorus is still very difficult, have you considered make them easier to farm?

A: Generally in the end of the dungeons there will be NPCs or other ways for you to teleport out of the instance, but if players still find it difficult, we will consider adding more. In terms of the difficulty in farming, our principle is: at the end of an expansion, you will be able to solo the content two expansions ago fairly easily. So by the end of Shadowlands, you should be able to kill the legion raid bosses fairly easily-- might not be able to one shot them, but you will be able to. When that time comes the majority of players will be able to go back farming legion content, and even BFA, perhaps with a small group of people.

I think the person that asked the question  was wanting to know if there was an easier way to get to the Antorus Raid since flying is prohibited in that zone.

Trollololololol Ion.

Towards the end of BFA I had a lot of fun going back in a small group to do the legion raids in mythic. It's not just farmers interested in old raids. There's fun to be had in running them as slightly-challenging content without needing to pull a whole raid together.  The immediately prior expac seems a reasonable place to require that.

I wonder if they're referring to just Mythic in regards to this? I was soloing Nighthold and Tomb (at least on normal/heroic mode), and a small group of people made Mythic easy peasy at the end of BfA. Now we gotta wait til the end of Shadowlands to do these? 🙄

Well until now, at the end of an expansion, you could pretty much solo the first raids of said expansion. It's ok for some mythic endbosses to require a second player because of mechanics, but a whole group? It is called legacy content for a reason afterall.

So they refuse to fix scaling. Just great... Before you could solo content from 2 expansions ago on release, for example WoD was soloable since BfA came out. Now Legion is 2 expansions old, yet still a lot of it requires a group.

Talk about a total disconnect from the community. For no reason either, why Ion, why is it 2 expansions? why not last expansion? I think it's reasonable expect to solo at least heroic BfA by end of SL.  What would allowing this cause that is so bad the devs won't do it?

There's really no reason why they can't have an appropriately looking teleport NPC portal in when the final raid boss dies, granting you a teleport to the raid entrance.

At the start of an xpac you should be able to solo everything from anything older than the previous xpac and not solo with some difficulty but its a complete cakewalk solo

It used to be once you were max level at the end of an expansion, you could solo the previous one. It sounds like (and I hate to assume) they're being lazy. Legion was 2 expansions back. We should have the ability to solo all of that content at this time.

Also, the image at the top of the article is perfection.

Well the thing is when Blizzard was toying around with the level squish and mentioned it once to the Community it had a series of mixed emotions from the playerbase.  One of the issues mainly was how the level squish would effect Legacy Raid from previous expansions.  Blizzard and Ion stated that this would not be an issue and would work over the bugs if that should happen after the level squish.  Now I find it rather odd that we are about midway through Season 1 and Blizzard has decided not to focus on this type of content and blantantly suggest that players wait till after SL.

After listening to the, "what is to come for SL", and most of the Q&A I felt as if they are going back to bad habits and not truely listening to the playerbase again.  TBC: Classic got way too much focus imo for push to player hype during Blizzcon.  Like I'm happy that they are doing that for the Playerbase that eagerly wants to stay in that expansion however SL needs to be thoroughly examined in several departments and Blizzard needs to confirm that the issue has been acknowledge or compromise on possible changes.

Eg) More class tuning for a handful of specializations for different types of content.  The bugginess of some levels for Torghast and TC. World Quest glitches where players recieve no credit for either being in a group or non-group.   Mob behavior of being aggroed toward passive pets from select classes like a Warlocks Imps from the Talent tree.  And so on.  On average I'll find 2-3 odd bugs and or glitches that still have not been fixed or addressed.

I am with the majority of players, right now heroic/mythic Legion raids should be soloable, FFS it's been long enough, just let us farm the way we want/need to. Secondly, on the teleports..I was thinking the person who asked Ion about this was more likely thinking of short cuts through legacy raids, something like the quest in Blackrock Foundry that lets you go straight to Blackhand. I think Hellfire Citadel had a similar thing for getting to Archimonde. We could really use that for Siege of Orgrimmar, Nighthold, and Antorus. And probably some of the BFA raids at some point.

We actually have something similair for the Nighthold and Antorus. I just completed the skip quest (kill Elissande 4 times) and can now directly go to her at the start of the raid. As castle Nathria also has the skip quest, i'm pretty sure BFA has them too. You might not be able to easily spot them if you have low lvl quests hidden (so no mark above the npc).

Oh crap lol I totally forgot about the quests in Nighthold. As for Antorus..I just haven't been in there beyond LFR much at all. Guess it's just SoO that could use a skip. If they added one, I'd go back and try to get the tusks. Haven't been back since the juggernaut dropped. 😛

With them beeing behind of schedule on the next patch i wonder if this statement just came because they have so much too do with the recent expansion. Im not amused about this article aswell but i think corona struck them hard.

Uh, didn't they tell us everything would works as before after the squish? It takes much more to solo stuff now than it did pre pre-patch. In fact, by now early BfA stuff should be soloable by people with good-but-not-mythic gear. That's not the case though.

We have another triple entry in the hotfix ledger, as Radiant Echoes gets more improvements in retail, while Season of Discovery and Cata Classic get additional class changes.
       August 7  (Source)
      Player-characters
Steady Flight should no longer be removed after entering an Arena. Quests
We tuned up the Prototype Shredder MK-03 so that “Eye for an Eye” can be completed. Radiant Echoes Event
Increased Flightstone and upgrade Crest drop rates in the event. Reduced the HP scaling on all event bosses so that they should be killable in a more-reasonable timeframe. Developers’ notes: This includes both ‘minibosses’ (e.g. Hogger, Thorim) and final bosses (e.g. Remembered Onyxia, Ragnaros). Season of Discovery
Hunter Heart of the Lion once again has a 100 yard range. Warrior The Focused Rage rune will now correctly reduce the cost of Meathook by 3. Cataclysm Classic
Fixed an issue where Faerie Fire did not deal intended amounts of threat when used on NPCs targeting another unit.

Due to a bug introduced with the War Within pre-patch, some players are receiving item level 250 gear from the weekly cache.
We've seen numerous reports on Reddit and the official forums that the Last Hurrah weekly quest on live servers drop low-level gear for some players. Apparently, the bug was first introduced with the War Within pre-patch two weeks ago and still hasn't been fixed.
Here's an example of a low item level drop from the Cache of Awakened Treasures by Omnifox.

Week 2 brings quite a few changes, as Hunters in particular rise up, while Shadow has a really bad time. The top 3 remains the same and very consistent, so let's jump in and see what's going on.
      Warcraft Logs Points
The below logs are based on POINTS, and not actual damage or healing, meaning they log the timed completion for the specs, with higher keys getting more points, obviously. The time in which the dungeon is completed is also a factor, but a much, much smaller one, as it grants very few points if you do it significantly faster than just any in-time completion. We're also using the Normalized Aggregate Scores numbers, for clarity, meaning the top spec is marked as 100 and then the rest are ranked in relation to that peak point.
      All Keys
      95th percentile DPS
The top 3 remains quite stable with the Evoker-Paladin-Warrior trio reigning supreme. We see the first change of the week right after that though, as Frost DK continues its upward march in dungeons as well as in raids, taking 4th from Elemental. Both DKs are on the rise, as Unholy also moves a spot up, taking advantage of Shadow's precipitous 5-spot fall to the bottom of the top 10. Arms remains stable as two Hunters burst in, Beast Mastery taking 8th and Marksmanship 9th, as Frost Mage disappears down towards the bottom. Speaking of the bottom, Devastation gets some new roommates there, as Outlaw and Destruction fall and give Enhancement and Feral a break.

Mythic+ All Keys 95th Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      All Percentiles
As with the top percentiles, the top 3 remains solid, but 4th is immediately changed, thanks to Shadow's massive drop in performance this week. The Priest loses even more ground here, falling 9 spots into 13th, opening 4th up for Arms. Beast Mastery moves even higher here, grabbing 5th and moving in front of Elemental and Frost DK, as Marksmanship brings up the rear and completes the Hunter sandwich in 8th. Affliction breaks into the top 10, just ahead of Unholy which dropped to the final spot.

Mythic+ All Keys All Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      Raw DPS U.GG DPS Rankings
U.gg's rankings are based on actual DPS taken from Warcraft Logs data, focusing on the top players and span the past two weeks.
Frost DK finds itself on top in the raw DPS rankings, as Augmentation isn't calculated properly here. Fury and Arms grab the next two spots, moving ahead of Ret, and the Fyr'alath wins continue in 5th, where Unholy finished the legendary axe streak. Even Survival joins the Hunter good times in 8th, where all three specs gather, just ahead of Balance who closes out the top 10.
Mythic+ All Keystone DPS rankings by u.gg.

For even more in-depth data for each individual key head on over to Warcraft Logs. And if you're interested in more info on the specs themselves you can always check out our class guides (updated for the pre-patch), as well as our Mythic+ guides and Mythic+ tier list.

MoP Remix characters that will transfer over to retail will receive a gear boost!
With Patch 11.0.2 now live on Public Test Realms, you can copy over MoP Remix characters from retail! It appears all MoP Remix characters will receive a character boost so you can dive straight into action when the War Within expansion launches.

We can't unfortunately log in to the game with the MoP Remix char on the PTR so we can't confirm the Item Level of gear for max level characters. However, keep in mind that the gear boost will scale with your level, so if you're below max cap, you will receive gear appropriate to your current level.
When Can We Expect MoP Remix Characters to Transfer to Retail?
MoP Remix ends on August 19, so we assume the characters will need to be transferred to retail by August 22 when Early Access begins.
