Castle Nathria DPS Log Rankings and Analysis: 9.0.5 Week 1

We've finally made it to a full week of data for Castle Nathria in patch 9.0.5! While we've already taken a look at the numbers twice after the patch hit, both on day 1 and day 5, we now have the full set of data and our experts can weight in.

Our guide writers will be taking a look at the biggest winner and biggest loser of the patch changes, and if you've been following the last two visits we had to Nathria, you'll know exactly who those are! Elemental has continued its meteoric rise in the raid and has landed in 3rd place for the 95th percentile and 4th for all percentiles, as Windwalker remains down near the bottom after the bug fixes (but there may be some good news there yet), so we'll be talking about both of those today. The other piece of big movement is Frost DKs, as they climbed pretty damn high, coming in 7th place from their previous 15th-ish spot! Retribution seems to have settled in to the middle of the pack after a really strong initial showing, and Frost Mages bounced back to their now regular spot under Fire.

Other than Survival Hunter all specs actually got plenty of play this past week compared to previous ones, with only the always bottom Hunter spec as well as Demonology and Arcane dipping below the (approximate) 3,000 logs required to be consistent data.

The major buffs to Elemental's cleave and AoE have unsurprisingly resulted in the spec doing significantly better damage on several fights in Castle Nathria. While 9.0.5 was only a slight buff to Elemental's single-target damage, Earthquake Earthquake being buffed by 70% and Chain Lightning Chain Lightning by 35% resulted in a drastic DPS increase on fights with a lot of cleave and AoE damage, most notably Stone Legion Generals where Elemental is now one of the strongest specs damage-wise, and to a lesser extent on Lady Inerva Darkvein. While some people are calling Elemental "overbuffed", I would argue that the size of these buffs reveals more about the state of the spec pre-patch than anything else. Earthquake was very underpowered when considering its downsides as a spell, downsides compounded by the Echoes of Great Sundering Echoes of Great Sundering legendary.

Now that Elemental's spenders deal adequate damage, the spec's overall viability has skyrocketed in every type of content. While Elemental remains in many people's minds a black sheep spec, in that it doesn't have some of the most powerful tools other staple specs have such as damage immunities, key raid buffs or powerful tools such as Warlocks' gateway, the 9.0.5. patch gives them enough DPS to be serious contenders in most fight types, with Elemental's single-target being already solid before the patch. If the next raid has key fights that are similar in the nature of the required DPS to SLG or Lady Inerva, I would expect Elemental Shamans to be highly desirable at any level of progression.

This past week with the release of the 9.0.5 patch, Windwalkers saw several bugs fixed that resulted in a loss of damage: Storm, Earth, and Fire Storm, Earth, and Fire spirits no longer continue to channel Fists of Fury Fists of Fury when you clip it and Mark of the Crane Mark of the Crane now functions correctly. This resulted in a 1-2% loss of single target damage and a 5-8% loss of damage on AOE/cleave fights where Windwalkers had previously been dominant.

On Thursday there were several more bugs that were fixed that resulted in an increase in damage, Fists of Fury now correctly hits 6 targets instead of 5 and Dance of Chi-Ji Dance of Chi-Ji now correctly increases Spinning Crane Kick Spinning Crane Kick damage by 200%. However, by then many raiders and guilds had already cleared or done most of their raiding, which meant that those bug fixes that increased damage won't have a big effect on the logs until after the next reset.

Overall, Windwalker lost a small amount of damage in single target and a moderate amount in AOE/Cleave fights. The loss of AoE damage is what has the biggest effect on the overall damage "ranking" on WCL simply due to the larger numbers and Windwalkers previously being one of the dominant specs. Windwalker should bounce back slightly next reset as people get more used to the changes in the playstyle and the beneficial bug fixes get a new reset to have more effect on the damage meters.

And here's a look at Heroic this week as well, where Assassination has burst through out of nowhere and is in 3rd place, from its almost dead last spot before the patch. Interestingly Frost DKs  didn't move up at all in Heroic, while Elemental moved up much less than in Mythic:

Still the biggest loser is survival hunter which is on the bottom since rework in Legion

The biggest issue with srv right now is you need to use ALL of your talents to make the spec playable and none of it is actually increasing the specs performance. Would love to see the recommended baseline spec of 2 Kill Commands, 2 Wildfire Bombs, Kill Command increasing Raptor Strikes damage, Wildfire Infusion, and possibly the Hydra's Bite talent being baked into the kit and creating talents to just increase numbers to at least get the spec on life support instead of dead in the gutter.

We have another triple entry in the hotfix ledger, as Radiant Echoes gets more improvements in retail, while Season of Discovery and Cata Classic get additional class changes.
       August 7  (Source)
      Player-characters
Steady Flight should no longer be removed after entering an Arena. Quests
We tuned up the Prototype Shredder MK-03 so that “Eye for an Eye” can be completed. Radiant Echoes Event
Increased Flightstone and upgrade Crest drop rates in the event. Reduced the HP scaling on all event bosses so that they should be killable in a more-reasonable timeframe. Developers’ notes: This includes both ‘minibosses’ (e.g. Hogger, Thorim) and final bosses (e.g. Remembered Onyxia, Ragnaros). Season of Discovery
Hunter Heart of the Lion once again has a 100 yard range. Warrior The Focused Rage rune will now correctly reduce the cost of Meathook by 3. Cataclysm Classic
Fixed an issue where Faerie Fire did not deal intended amounts of threat when used on NPCs targeting another unit.

Due to a bug introduced with the War Within pre-patch, some players are receiving item level 250 gear from the weekly cache.
We've seen numerous reports on Reddit and the official forums that the Last Hurrah weekly quest on live servers drop low-level gear for some players. Apparently, the bug was first introduced with the War Within pre-patch two weeks ago and still hasn't been fixed.
Here's an example of a low item level drop from the Cache of Awakened Treasures by Omnifox.

Week 2 brings quite a few changes, as Hunters in particular rise up, while Shadow has a really bad time. The top 3 remains the same and very consistent, so let's jump in and see what's going on.
      Warcraft Logs Points
The below logs are based on POINTS, and not actual damage or healing, meaning they log the timed completion for the specs, with higher keys getting more points, obviously. The time in which the dungeon is completed is also a factor, but a much, much smaller one, as it grants very few points if you do it significantly faster than just any in-time completion. We're also using the Normalized Aggregate Scores numbers, for clarity, meaning the top spec is marked as 100 and then the rest are ranked in relation to that peak point.
      All Keys
      95th percentile DPS
The top 3 remains quite stable with the Evoker-Paladin-Warrior trio reigning supreme. We see the first change of the week right after that though, as Frost DK continues its upward march in dungeons as well as in raids, taking 4th from Elemental. Both DKs are on the rise, as Unholy also moves a spot up, taking advantage of Shadow's precipitous 5-spot fall to the bottom of the top 10. Arms remains stable as two Hunters burst in, Beast Mastery taking 8th and Marksmanship 9th, as Frost Mage disappears down towards the bottom. Speaking of the bottom, Devastation gets some new roommates there, as Outlaw and Destruction fall and give Enhancement and Feral a break.

Mythic+ All Keys 95th Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      All Percentiles
As with the top percentiles, the top 3 remains solid, but 4th is immediately changed, thanks to Shadow's massive drop in performance this week. The Priest loses even more ground here, falling 9 spots into 13th, opening 4th up for Arms. Beast Mastery moves even higher here, grabbing 5th and moving in front of Elemental and Frost DK, as Marksmanship brings up the rear and completes the Hunter sandwich in 8th. Affliction breaks into the top 10, just ahead of Unholy which dropped to the final spot.

Mythic+ All Keys All Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      Raw DPS U.GG DPS Rankings
U.gg's rankings are based on actual DPS taken from Warcraft Logs data, focusing on the top players and span the past two weeks.
Frost DK finds itself on top in the raw DPS rankings, as Augmentation isn't calculated properly here. Fury and Arms grab the next two spots, moving ahead of Ret, and the Fyr'alath wins continue in 5th, where Unholy finished the legendary axe streak. Even Survival joins the Hunter good times in 8th, where all three specs gather, just ahead of Balance who closes out the top 10.
Mythic+ All Keystone DPS rankings by u.gg.

For even more in-depth data for each individual key head on over to Warcraft Logs. And if you're interested in more info on the specs themselves you can always check out our class guides (updated for the pre-patch), as well as our Mythic+ guides and Mythic+ tier list.

MoP Remix characters that will transfer over to retail will receive a gear boost!
With Patch 11.0.2 now live on Public Test Realms, you can copy over MoP Remix characters from retail! It appears all MoP Remix characters will receive a character boost so you can dive straight into action when the War Within expansion launches.

We can't unfortunately log in to the game with the MoP Remix char on the PTR so we can't confirm the Item Level of gear for max level characters. However, keep in mind that the gear boost will scale with your level, so if you're below max cap, you will receive gear appropriate to your current level.
When Can We Expect MoP Remix Characters to Transfer to Retail?
MoP Remix ends on August 19, so we assume the characters will need to be transferred to retail by August 22 when Early Access begins.
