Massive 9.1 Torghast Changes: 5 Star Rating, Talent Tree and More

Recommended Posts

Torghast was one of the bigger topics of conversation in the Preach interview with Ion Hazzikostas, and they went over some major changes to the way it will work in patch 9.1.

First off there's a lot of changes coming in the next (presumably today's) 9.1 PTR build, and after the massive nerf to the Tower of the Damned in December (which was needed to solve the massive frustration the players were experiencing) Torghast felt like a chore, as you couldn't really fail it, so the new floors needed major changes in the way they worked. And so the intention is to make Torghast more challenging again, without being as punishing as it was pre-nerf. So what does that mean?

  • Getting rid of the death counter.
  • More granular scoring system - adding a new 5 star (or gem) overall rating for each individual run.
  • A meter that measures your activity/hot streak (like in Guitar hero) - you get bonuses the more active you are, the more you're killing things etc.
  • A balance of killing stuff fast, exploring and not dying all adds up to the overall rating.
  • You'll always get the Soul Ash/new Soul Cinders currency at the end, but a specific "star/gem" rating will be required to move to the next floor.
  • The new Soul Cinders currency will be used to upgrade legedaries to rank 5 and 6, to bring them up to date with the new item levels of 9.1.

  • A 4 star/gem rating might be needed to progress to a high layer, while 5 stars/gems have additional rewards related to them like achievements and similar.
    • Plays to the differing spec and player strengths.
  • It's not all about going fast - you can get a 5 star/gem rating by going quickly and racking up the hot streak bonuses OR you can be meticulous and clear everything safely and thoroughly.
  • There is also a new Torghast talent tree progression system "Tower Knowledge" being the currency.
    • You will gain Tower Knowledge on "failed" runs as well aka low scoring ones, so you're constantly progressing through the talent tree.
    • Talents will be QoL stuff like auto looting everything around you and power upgrades similar to the Ve'nari stuff in 9.0.
  • No actual gear coming to Torghast.
  • There are more randomized modifiers/affixes coming in 9.1, some negative but also some positive perks called Blessings.

Those sound like some pretty good changes, and as someone who enjoyed Torghast at the start and thinks it's a really solid base for a great long-term system, I'm very curious as to how the 9.1 changes will turn out.

This is great. Because one thing that annoys me very much is being paired with a group that wants to skip all the mobs.

Sounds great but people will cry anyway.

There was nothing wrong with only doing as much as you could with the gear you had and people complained until Blizz nerfed it.

Like there's 8 layers. You're not geared/good enough to do layer 8. Sorry. *shrug*

This is what Mythic+ needs,  being required to kill everything there would fix so many balance issues

god no, the % and routes with a timer makes sense, that can stay out of M+ thanks. Having to pull everything would only inflate the need for non aoe capped classes that are thriving now...

Will be interesting to see how this works, but as long as it's acc wide still, fine.

Honestly, it's my least favourite part of the expac, and not a big fan of doing it. Pre nerf was fine imo, esp in groups, now it's just tedious. If they could make a way to get all the ash/cinders we need in one run, even if it's a 12 floor run, or TC layer I'd be happier since we can grow the powers rather than start again.

Otherwise it sounds like they're mashing guitar hero into horrific visions and arcade games and I am both intrigued and put off by the thought so time will tell.

Yes...just what we need, MOAR SYSTEMS.

This is actually the killer for me.   You set up this big new activity like Torghast, and then fail to create a compelling reason to keep running it past the obligatory weekly ash pickup.     Why not allow gear progression to also come from Torghast?    Why is Blizzard so crazy opposed to players gearing up at a reasonable pace this expansion?

(Cynical ancient reptile brain voice: "Because it's going to be an even longer wait till 9.2 and they need this to last.")

If anything I wish dungeons were smaller and with less trash to kill. It is not fun, it was never fun, it will never be fun.

Agreed on that at least, I also hate it in raids, ToC was the best raid for trash!

I never get BoE's which makes them more annoying

Trial of the Champion/Crusader and Vault of Archavon were the best dungeon/raids ever made. Just enter, kill the boss, get loot. Simple and effective.

Real problem is huge class imbalance and uneven difficulty.  You could easily clear everything, then get wafflestomped by the boss.  So an hour and a half in, with no real indication you weren't ready, and you get nothing.

Switch to an alt with far less gear (*ahem resto shaman*) and waltz through everything, every time.  The anima powers were badly designed for some classes, not balanced at all.

Trial of the Crusader... The exact raid when everyone complained about being trash...

We have another triple entry in the hotfix ledger, as Radiant Echoes gets more improvements in retail, while Season of Discovery and Cata Classic get additional class changes.
       August 7  (Source)
      Player-characters
Steady Flight should no longer be removed after entering an Arena. Quests
We tuned up the Prototype Shredder MK-03 so that “Eye for an Eye” can be completed. Radiant Echoes Event
Increased Flightstone and upgrade Crest drop rates in the event. Reduced the HP scaling on all event bosses so that they should be killable in a more-reasonable timeframe. Developers’ notes: This includes both ‘minibosses’ (e.g. Hogger, Thorim) and final bosses (e.g. Remembered Onyxia, Ragnaros). Season of Discovery
Hunter Heart of the Lion once again has a 100 yard range. Warrior The Focused Rage rune will now correctly reduce the cost of Meathook by 3. Cataclysm Classic
Fixed an issue where Faerie Fire did not deal intended amounts of threat when used on NPCs targeting another unit.

Due to a bug introduced with the War Within pre-patch, some players are receiving item level 250 gear from the weekly cache.
We've seen numerous reports on Reddit and the official forums that the Last Hurrah weekly quest on live servers drop low-level gear for some players. Apparently, the bug was first introduced with the War Within pre-patch two weeks ago and still hasn't been fixed.
Here's an example of a low item level drop from the Cache of Awakened Treasures by Omnifox.

Week 2 brings quite a few changes, as Hunters in particular rise up, while Shadow has a really bad time. The top 3 remains the same and very consistent, so let's jump in and see what's going on.
      Warcraft Logs Points
The below logs are based on POINTS, and not actual damage or healing, meaning they log the timed completion for the specs, with higher keys getting more points, obviously. The time in which the dungeon is completed is also a factor, but a much, much smaller one, as it grants very few points if you do it significantly faster than just any in-time completion. We're also using the Normalized Aggregate Scores numbers, for clarity, meaning the top spec is marked as 100 and then the rest are ranked in relation to that peak point.
      All Keys
      95th percentile DPS
The top 3 remains quite stable with the Evoker-Paladin-Warrior trio reigning supreme. We see the first change of the week right after that though, as Frost DK continues its upward march in dungeons as well as in raids, taking 4th from Elemental. Both DKs are on the rise, as Unholy also moves a spot up, taking advantage of Shadow's precipitous 5-spot fall to the bottom of the top 10. Arms remains stable as two Hunters burst in, Beast Mastery taking 8th and Marksmanship 9th, as Frost Mage disappears down towards the bottom. Speaking of the bottom, Devastation gets some new roommates there, as Outlaw and Destruction fall and give Enhancement and Feral a break.

Mythic+ All Keys 95th Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      All Percentiles
As with the top percentiles, the top 3 remains solid, but 4th is immediately changed, thanks to Shadow's massive drop in performance this week. The Priest loses even more ground here, falling 9 spots into 13th, opening 4th up for Arms. Beast Mastery moves even higher here, grabbing 5th and moving in front of Elemental and Frost DK, as Marksmanship brings up the rear and completes the Hunter sandwich in 8th. Affliction breaks into the top 10, just ahead of Unholy which dropped to the final spot.

Mythic+ All Keys All Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      Raw DPS U.GG DPS Rankings
U.gg's rankings are based on actual DPS taken from Warcraft Logs data, focusing on the top players and span the past two weeks.
Frost DK finds itself on top in the raw DPS rankings, as Augmentation isn't calculated properly here. Fury and Arms grab the next two spots, moving ahead of Ret, and the Fyr'alath wins continue in 5th, where Unholy finished the legendary axe streak. Even Survival joins the Hunter good times in 8th, where all three specs gather, just ahead of Balance who closes out the top 10.
Mythic+ All Keystone DPS rankings by u.gg.

For even more in-depth data for each individual key head on over to Warcraft Logs. And if you're interested in more info on the specs themselves you can always check out our class guides (updated for the pre-patch), as well as our Mythic+ guides and Mythic+ tier list.

MoP Remix characters that will transfer over to retail will receive a gear boost!
With Patch 11.0.2 now live on Public Test Realms, you can copy over MoP Remix characters from retail! It appears all MoP Remix characters will receive a character boost so you can dive straight into action when the War Within expansion launches.

We can't unfortunately log in to the game with the MoP Remix char on the PTR so we can't confirm the Item Level of gear for max level characters. However, keep in mind that the gear boost will scale with your level, so if you're below max cap, you will receive gear appropriate to your current level.
When Can We Expect MoP Remix Characters to Transfer to Retail?
MoP Remix ends on August 19, so we assume the characters will need to be transferred to retail by August 22 when Early Access begins.
