The Best Renown Farm Method

Recommended Posts

BfbmqZo.jpg

Here's quite a tip if you need a whole lot or just a little Renown on an alt, after swapping Covenants, or as you're coming back from some time off, as there's a pretty new and extremely efficient method to check out.

A recent hotfix introduced Renown as a drop from Torghast floor completions, and while it mentioned higher floors have higher changes of it dropping, there's a very specific sweet spot that makes farming even very large quantities of it quick and rewarding. As spotted by helonight, it seems layer 5 is the absolute best spot to get as much catchup Renown as you want (up to a point), as they actually managed to get from 1 to 30 in around 5 hours using this method! Now the drops are still random and not quite 100% on layer 5 (as the drop chance decreases the higher you get in Renown), so the overall tip is to just do whichever 5+ floor you can do really fast with your gear (and we've seen some insanely fast Torghast clears recently, so since you're not looking for any kind of completion score, you can do it pretty fast too). Which layer you want will depend on your Renown level as well, so you may have to increase the layer at later levels, but 9 seems to be a 100% drop for a long time (up until 45 or so).

Here are some additional comments from other players, some of which had to increase the layer above 5, and some even getting the lower Renown levels from layers 1 and 2!

I did this up to 36 renown. You have to increase the level though. Run layer 5 until around 10 or so. Layer 6 till 15, layer 7 until 20, layer 8 until 28, then layer 9 until it doesn't give you one.

These numbers aren't exact as I wasn't tracking it while I did it, I just went to the next floor when I didn't receive one. They are pretty close though. Also the majority of time spent is running, so increasing difficulty early so you don't waste a run not getting renown will end up saving time. - Raidenwins75
...
Yep, after 3x renown, it is much harder to drop. So farming in Torghast should start at lv1. There is no cap if you have done all the main quests and below renown time gated cap current 57lv - helonight
...
If you're a rogue or a druid and you have Blessings. There's one that gives you +75% movement speed out of combat. The blessings change each day, but are the same for the full day.
Layer 1&2 doesn't have elites, so no stealth detection. The further from renown cap you have, the larger chance for them to drop.
A run takes a bit under 2 min, depending on the layout.
Got 14 renown the first ~hour, including downtime and stuff. Then got 18 the next hour where I optimized a bit. - MRosvall
...
yeah i went layer 9 1-43 at 100% drop rate when the cap was 54 and then the campaign finished me off, i started at layer 7 but randomly didn't get one drop at like 23 renown so i went to 9 - bigmanorm

I'm definitely doing this on my next alt, but full disclosure, I'm one of those weirdos who actually LIKES Torghast and would very much like to see it iterated upon in future expansions.

Replying to that whimsical last line, i don't hate torghast, i just hate being forced into it. Wow's at its best when there's fun variety of content and difficulty and you take your pick. Torghast being the only way to farm leggos makes it feels like a chore, fast.

As a rogue, I hate Torghast with a passion I usually reserve for seafood.  Consequently, I've timed out on this expansion pretty much, hop in and level alts occasionally, or do new patch content briefly, but that's it.  Just can't bring myself to cancel the sub and wave bye bye to my main and alts though.

While I share your seafood emotions, I just can't hate Torghast! It definitely has quite a few flaws but I feel it can be so much better if they work on it for the next expansions and don't just abandon it like the did garrisons. That was the perfect example of a REALLY good potential feature if it had been iterated on (and no, class halls don't count), but the hate they got from the community (for somewhat in-community reasons no less) just killed it completely. We could have had real, well-made player housing dammit! So yea, while I can certainly see why people dislike Torghast, despite not feeling that way myself, I REALLY think it could be great for everyone if we gave it another chance down the line. But I somehow doubt that will happen.

I changed from Kyrian to Night Fae the other day on my hunter and had to regrind from about 45 renown (after callings and world bosses) up to 56 (as I had the weekly anima quest). Decided to spam Layer 7's to see how it went. I basically stealthed through everything, killed the end boss and spent about an average of 1 minute per floor. From the runs that I did, I would say that I got renown every 1 out of 3 runs, but only spent about 6-7 minutes per run. Was a super easy  and quick way to farm renown.

We have another triple entry in the hotfix ledger, as Radiant Echoes gets more improvements in retail, while Season of Discovery and Cata Classic get additional class changes.
       August 7  (Source)
      Player-characters
Steady Flight should no longer be removed after entering an Arena. Quests
We tuned up the Prototype Shredder MK-03 so that “Eye for an Eye” can be completed. Radiant Echoes Event
Increased Flightstone and upgrade Crest drop rates in the event. Reduced the HP scaling on all event bosses so that they should be killable in a more-reasonable timeframe. Developers’ notes: This includes both ‘minibosses’ (e.g. Hogger, Thorim) and final bosses (e.g. Remembered Onyxia, Ragnaros). Season of Discovery
Hunter Heart of the Lion once again has a 100 yard range. Warrior The Focused Rage rune will now correctly reduce the cost of Meathook by 3. Cataclysm Classic
Fixed an issue where Faerie Fire did not deal intended amounts of threat when used on NPCs targeting another unit.

Due to a bug introduced with the War Within pre-patch, some players are receiving item level 250 gear from the weekly cache.
We've seen numerous reports on Reddit and the official forums that the Last Hurrah weekly quest on live servers drop low-level gear for some players. Apparently, the bug was first introduced with the War Within pre-patch two weeks ago and still hasn't been fixed.
Here's an example of a low item level drop from the Cache of Awakened Treasures by Omnifox.

Week 2 brings quite a few changes, as Hunters in particular rise up, while Shadow has a really bad time. The top 3 remains the same and very consistent, so let's jump in and see what's going on.
      Warcraft Logs Points
The below logs are based on POINTS, and not actual damage or healing, meaning they log the timed completion for the specs, with higher keys getting more points, obviously. The time in which the dungeon is completed is also a factor, but a much, much smaller one, as it grants very few points if you do it significantly faster than just any in-time completion. We're also using the Normalized Aggregate Scores numbers, for clarity, meaning the top spec is marked as 100 and then the rest are ranked in relation to that peak point.
      All Keys
      95th percentile DPS
The top 3 remains quite stable with the Evoker-Paladin-Warrior trio reigning supreme. We see the first change of the week right after that though, as Frost DK continues its upward march in dungeons as well as in raids, taking 4th from Elemental. Both DKs are on the rise, as Unholy also moves a spot up, taking advantage of Shadow's precipitous 5-spot fall to the bottom of the top 10. Arms remains stable as two Hunters burst in, Beast Mastery taking 8th and Marksmanship 9th, as Frost Mage disappears down towards the bottom. Speaking of the bottom, Devastation gets some new roommates there, as Outlaw and Destruction fall and give Enhancement and Feral a break.

Mythic+ All Keys 95th Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      All Percentiles
As with the top percentiles, the top 3 remains solid, but 4th is immediately changed, thanks to Shadow's massive drop in performance this week. The Priest loses even more ground here, falling 9 spots into 13th, opening 4th up for Arms. Beast Mastery moves even higher here, grabbing 5th and moving in front of Elemental and Frost DK, as Marksmanship brings up the rear and completes the Hunter sandwich in 8th. Affliction breaks into the top 10, just ahead of Unholy which dropped to the final spot.

Mythic+ All Keys All Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      Raw DPS U.GG DPS Rankings
U.gg's rankings are based on actual DPS taken from Warcraft Logs data, focusing on the top players and span the past two weeks.
Frost DK finds itself on top in the raw DPS rankings, as Augmentation isn't calculated properly here. Fury and Arms grab the next two spots, moving ahead of Ret, and the Fyr'alath wins continue in 5th, where Unholy finished the legendary axe streak. Even Survival joins the Hunter good times in 8th, where all three specs gather, just ahead of Balance who closes out the top 10.
Mythic+ All Keystone DPS rankings by u.gg.

For even more in-depth data for each individual key head on over to Warcraft Logs. And if you're interested in more info on the specs themselves you can always check out our class guides (updated for the pre-patch), as well as our Mythic+ guides and Mythic+ tier list.

MoP Remix characters that will transfer over to retail will receive a gear boost!
With Patch 11.0.2 now live on Public Test Realms, you can copy over MoP Remix characters from retail! It appears all MoP Remix characters will receive a character boost so you can dive straight into action when the War Within expansion launches.

We can't unfortunately log in to the game with the MoP Remix char on the PTR so we can't confirm the Item Level of gear for max level characters. However, keep in mind that the gear boost will scale with your level, so if you're below max cap, you will receive gear appropriate to your current level.
When Can We Expect MoP Remix Characters to Transfer to Retail?
MoP Remix ends on August 19, so we assume the characters will need to be transferred to retail by August 22 when Early Access begins.
