More Developer-Related Names to Be Removed from World of Warcraft

Recommended Posts

It seems Alex Afrasiabi isn't the only one getting references to their name removed in World of Warcraft. After the Overwatch team announced the renaming of hero McCree, the Washington Post received comments from Blizzard developers saying that there are more changes coming to WoW as well.

In addition to Jesse McCree (former Lead Level Designer), Louis Barriga (who was a Lead Developer on WoW for a long time before moving to Diablo 4) and Jonathan LeCraft (former Senior Game Designer) will also have references to their names removed in WoW, as all three men were let go from the company over the past month, in the wake of the Activision Blizzard discrimination lawsuit.

Currently, another popular Blizzard game, “World of Warcraft,” still contains references to Jesse McCree in the form of five character names and one city name. However, multiple current employees who wished to remain anonymous out of fear of reprisal said Thursday that nods to the longtime level designer will be removed from the game soon as well. In addition, references to two other former Blizzard developers, “Diablo 4” director Luis Barriga and “World of Warcraft” designer Jonathan LeCraft, will also be removed. A Blizzard spokesperson confirmed these changes.

“We can confirm that those references in ‘World of Warcraft’ will be removed,” the spokesperson said.

- Nathan Grayson, The Washington Post

Aside from the obvious Mac'Aree city/ruins on Argus, the characters mentioned would be Jesseriah McCree, Jessup McCree, Marshal McCree, Jenny McCree and Jessera of Mac'Aree for Jesse McCree, while Crafticus Mindbender, Torturer LeCraft and Jonathan Le Karf might be the ones related to Jonathan LeCraft, and at least Senior Scrivener Barriga for Luis Barriga.

As useless as removing /spit emote imo..

Yep it's completely hollow changes only done so people can pat themselves on the back and say "look we did something" while accomplishing nothing noteworthy or making any actual change

The rename matters because the comm wanted it. Stop with your double standards.

If your suggestion is that Reddit is crying victory on this, I think you might live in an alternate universe. They were generally unhappy with /spit and with the removal of NPCs as anything really meaningful.

So... you guys complain that the devs who CAN make this kind of change, are responsible for corporate-level, company-wide, changes to various policies?

These kinds of comments are as disconnected as complaining about new character customizations taking dev time away from class balance.

It is not handled by the same people. The people getting these changes through, are doing what is forward facing, that they can affect. The bigger changes that need to happen internally, are not handled by the same people.

Does this really fix anything? No, of course not.

Should they be allowed to remain in game content as an honor to their work on it? Also no.

I don't know about all the troll posters here, but I'm glad that sexual predators won't share the same virtual space as Amara Strande and Ezra Chatterton. Besides, people like this have huge egos, and chipping away at that in any way possible is worth doing.

And, the fact that they were ever named in honor of them will forever remain as a fun fact or as a note at the bottom of wikis and in note sections.

Or you know, they are changes that need to be made so that those who were victimized by these men don't have to feel that their abusers are celebrated?

At some point it should make companies think that they should not name anything major after company members because regretably one day you might need to distance yourself from them. And while changing the names of some random NPCs is easy, changing something as major as an Overwatch Hero's name which is present in so many videos, voice acting or merchandising or such a central part of Warcraft Lore as Mac'aree is not as easy and is to the detriment of the games. Still absolutely has to happen ofc.

So how are they going to deal with the name of Mac'Aree in Velen's recorded dialog as well as the written and map versions? Will they just change the spelling to Makari or something? As it's spelled now, it never did really seem to fit in with the names of the other areas or the Draenei lore.

I am pretty much sure that "comm" doesn't represent us all. Never really cared how "Mac'Aree" was named but these names are already imprinted in our memory.

In the end, only the loudest crybabies tend to be heard, especially when its about specific parts of the Human demographic.

I am gonna be pissed if they changes Mac'Aree. This Cali lawfarm and JSW are literally insane.

Well, they tend to never get satisfied, so i tend to ignore those self-entitled brats.

And I'm sure you were just as pissed off at all those confederate statues being removed, too. Don't worry, your sexual abuse heroes will rise again!

Yeah, some of the comments here are appallingly stupid. They are exactly as if they came out from one of these "dudebro, anti-SJW" Youtube channels (which is probably true at least in some of the above cases). I think it's obvious that company doesn't want to be associated with these people anymore, so it's understandable why they are doing this. Besides, what several posters here are seemingly ignoring is the fact that those people aren't innocent, even if they didn't directly participate in a harassment of employees. As those in leadership positions, they were still aware of what was happening and enabling it, either by simple ignorance or by trying to protect their colleagues.

Btw, I had no idea that some of npcs mentioned in the article were even references to someone (those related to Jonathan LeCraft).

come on guys says blizzard come on we removed the bad no no names from the game, why you still asking for better work conditions?

this is like applauding a guy who acid attacked someone because he is then willing to pay 10% of the hospital bill

no one even knew who these NPCs were and ESPEICALLY no one new they were named after devs, I thought Mac'aree was named after the overwatch character, not some dev.

Hiding history is easier than making actual change or confronting the actual problems, which is why both of these things were done.  If they really wanted to accomplish something productive/ send a better message, they could have moved all the NPC's into the Stockades as prisoners.

We have another triple entry in the hotfix ledger, as Radiant Echoes gets more improvements in retail, while Season of Discovery and Cata Classic get additional class changes.
       August 7  (Source)
      Player-characters
Steady Flight should no longer be removed after entering an Arena. Quests
We tuned up the Prototype Shredder MK-03 so that “Eye for an Eye” can be completed. Radiant Echoes Event
Increased Flightstone and upgrade Crest drop rates in the event. Reduced the HP scaling on all event bosses so that they should be killable in a more-reasonable timeframe. Developers’ notes: This includes both ‘minibosses’ (e.g. Hogger, Thorim) and final bosses (e.g. Remembered Onyxia, Ragnaros). Season of Discovery
Hunter Heart of the Lion once again has a 100 yard range. Warrior The Focused Rage rune will now correctly reduce the cost of Meathook by 3. Cataclysm Classic
Fixed an issue where Faerie Fire did not deal intended amounts of threat when used on NPCs targeting another unit.

Due to a bug introduced with the War Within pre-patch, some players are receiving item level 250 gear from the weekly cache.
We've seen numerous reports on Reddit and the official forums that the Last Hurrah weekly quest on live servers drop low-level gear for some players. Apparently, the bug was first introduced with the War Within pre-patch two weeks ago and still hasn't been fixed.
Here's an example of a low item level drop from the Cache of Awakened Treasures by Omnifox.

Week 2 brings quite a few changes, as Hunters in particular rise up, while Shadow has a really bad time. The top 3 remains the same and very consistent, so let's jump in and see what's going on.
      Warcraft Logs Points
The below logs are based on POINTS, and not actual damage or healing, meaning they log the timed completion for the specs, with higher keys getting more points, obviously. The time in which the dungeon is completed is also a factor, but a much, much smaller one, as it grants very few points if you do it significantly faster than just any in-time completion. We're also using the Normalized Aggregate Scores numbers, for clarity, meaning the top spec is marked as 100 and then the rest are ranked in relation to that peak point.
      All Keys
      95th percentile DPS
The top 3 remains quite stable with the Evoker-Paladin-Warrior trio reigning supreme. We see the first change of the week right after that though, as Frost DK continues its upward march in dungeons as well as in raids, taking 4th from Elemental. Both DKs are on the rise, as Unholy also moves a spot up, taking advantage of Shadow's precipitous 5-spot fall to the bottom of the top 10. Arms remains stable as two Hunters burst in, Beast Mastery taking 8th and Marksmanship 9th, as Frost Mage disappears down towards the bottom. Speaking of the bottom, Devastation gets some new roommates there, as Outlaw and Destruction fall and give Enhancement and Feral a break.

Mythic+ All Keys 95th Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      All Percentiles
As with the top percentiles, the top 3 remains solid, but 4th is immediately changed, thanks to Shadow's massive drop in performance this week. The Priest loses even more ground here, falling 9 spots into 13th, opening 4th up for Arms. Beast Mastery moves even higher here, grabbing 5th and moving in front of Elemental and Frost DK, as Marksmanship brings up the rear and completes the Hunter sandwich in 8th. Affliction breaks into the top 10, just ahead of Unholy which dropped to the final spot.

Mythic+ All Keys All Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      Raw DPS U.GG DPS Rankings
U.gg's rankings are based on actual DPS taken from Warcraft Logs data, focusing on the top players and span the past two weeks.
Frost DK finds itself on top in the raw DPS rankings, as Augmentation isn't calculated properly here. Fury and Arms grab the next two spots, moving ahead of Ret, and the Fyr'alath wins continue in 5th, where Unholy finished the legendary axe streak. Even Survival joins the Hunter good times in 8th, where all three specs gather, just ahead of Balance who closes out the top 10.
Mythic+ All Keystone DPS rankings by u.gg.

For even more in-depth data for each individual key head on over to Warcraft Logs. And if you're interested in more info on the specs themselves you can always check out our class guides (updated for the pre-patch), as well as our Mythic+ guides and Mythic+ tier list.

MoP Remix characters that will transfer over to retail will receive a gear boost!
With Patch 11.0.2 now live on Public Test Realms, you can copy over MoP Remix characters from retail! It appears all MoP Remix characters will receive a character boost so you can dive straight into action when the War Within expansion launches.

We can't unfortunately log in to the game with the MoP Remix char on the PTR so we can't confirm the Item Level of gear for max level characters. However, keep in mind that the gear boost will scale with your level, so if you're below max cap, you will receive gear appropriate to your current level.
When Can We Expect MoP Remix Characters to Transfer to Retail?
MoP Remix ends on August 19, so we assume the characters will need to be transferred to retail by August 22 when Early Access begins.
