WARNING! Accidental Character Deletions in Diablo 2: Resurrected

Recommended Posts

Here's another warning for anyone playing with a controller (and even on mouse and keyboard to a lesser extent), whether it's on console or on PC, as deleting your character is entirely too easy and can happen to anyone!

The primary concern is very much a controller-specific issue, as the required button presses are on the most used buttons (X and A on Xbox controllers) and we've now had several players reporting having deleted their high level characters because of it.

However, accidental deletion of characters has also affected some keyboard and mouse players, as it's just too easy to instantly delete them, although not quite as much as on controllers:

This is a pretty serious issue and hopefully we'll get some sort of delete confirmation windows added soon, but until then be VERY careful in the character menu if you're playing with a controller. This is becoming more and more relevant for PC players as well, as many have been finding the controller-based gameplay to be pretty great and are switching over, so maybe give it a try (while slowly pressing buttons in the menus).

Personally, I blame Mephisto so I used him as the header image for the article. This might seem like a pure "destruction" type thing and Baal would be the obvious choice, but the amount of hatred generated by these deletions is surely enough to entire ol' Meph.

But like surely if you're that fast-trigger on the button then your muscle memory protects you from such nuances.

Maybe I'm being non-empathetic, but you can't have it both ways!

Spoiler

My legitimate sympathies to anyone that may struggle with impulse user input!

Wow, sounds like a pretty common mistake even I would make.

Time to put in a restore button, or like one of the post suggested, have a more complex confirm mechanism like holding a button down (console) or typing something out (PC).

Exactly, with things like this that is what most developers do, and shouldn't be that hard.. Seems in this case they completely forgot all about it, or can't be bothered to add it in.. lol

I think it's just they kept it as it was back then, but didn't take the controller thing into consideration. I'd say this gets updated in the next patch once they get the other issues fixed.

I just did the same twice, one without realising why my character was missing and the second. Pressed two buttons (back triggers of Steam controllers) to test if the controller was on and boom. My character is removed! :( Less than ideal.

When selling items, we have to keep the button pressed for a while for the action to happen. The same when we add a skill point. The same could be applied to this interface, so we do not loose our progress like that.

This just happened to me as well.

I play controller on PC and I wanted to casually tap A on my controller, lying on the table, to start a new game on my level 86, decked out hammer paladin. I fumbled the tap and accidentally swiped the X button first. At first, I didn't even comprehend what happened, because I was caught totally off guard by the deletion mechanism that I didn't mean to invoke.

I never imagined this kind of lax UI design would be included in a Blizzard game, furthermore, one where potentially hundreds of hours are poured into each respective character.

I usually don't make mistakes like this because I am lazy or don't read the UI. I was casually careless because I had assumed something like this could NEVER happen, which was however my own fault.

Fortunately, I had a backup from my original D2 files to drop him back in, losing only a few hours of grinding progress, and gaining a harrowing scare to boot.

All items in that character group's Shared Stash go into a new Withdraw Only set of Shared Stash tabs, denoted by a check marked Past box. When Ladder Season 6 ends, this withdraw only set of Stash Tabs will be overridden with any items in the Ladder Season 6 Shared Stash. Be sure to get any items out before then or they will be forever lost!
