wow Finkle Einhorn Renamed to Pip Quickwit

DesMephisto noticed that Blizzard has renamed Finkle Einhorn to Pip Quickwit and Lava Dredger in World of Warcraft. The change is apparently also present in Hearthstone.

Blizzard continues to remove various references from the game. This time, a Gnome called Finkle Einhorn has been renamed to Pip Quickwit and the same applies to Lava Dredger.

 

The change is also present in Hearthstone.

It's actually a made up character used as a pop culture reference in another made up world which isn't there, not to justify the actions of the MADE UP character but to reference his place in mass media.

What about Sweeny Todd?

You know him. The made up character that used his made up victims trust in him to lure them into a position where he could take their made up lives with a made up razor in a made up story. He's referenced in another made up world called the World of Warcraft. Obviously he has to go too since killing people is wrong and we're purging the wrong right?

 

If you start to equate the REAL WORLD with the one you've made up then you've crossed a boundary of logic and reason and any appeals to such are without credibility.

I'm pretty sure that Ace Ventura and every other male reacting to Finkle is not reacting because they are a murderer. If one cannot recognize how intensely transphobic the relevant content is, then they likely don't believe transphobia exists (or doesn't consider it problematic which is patently worse). If protecting what is likely the MOST vulnerable group in our societies is not a priority for some of the gamers it does not mean it should not be a priority for the developers who try to remove exactly this type of "culture" from the company they work where a man nearly vomiting on the though of having kissed a transwoman was not just acceptable but cause for much laughter and deserving of being commemorated in game.

This may be one of the very few politically correct changes I could agree with. That Ace Ventura film was so spiteful and nasty even in its own time. The name shouldn't have been put in the game in the first place.

These are very obviously different things.

A reference to Sweeney Todd is, yes, a reference to a fictional character.

A reference to Finkle/Einhorn is less a reference to a character, and more a reference to a joke, specifically an offensive and bigoted one; not to mention dated. It's an endorsement of that joke, what the joke is saying, by extension, the target of the joke.

Finkle Einhorn has a context in the real world; he is a joke- an act of speech- with a real-world target: an already marginalized and severely persecuted subset of people.

Sweeney Todd is a person in a piece of fiction.

Very happy to continue to see these small but meaningful changes. These are voices inside and outside Blizzard being heard for the first time.

I don't care how small these changes go or how meaningless y'all think they are. (Also please do tell how it's censorship when the owner of a work makes their own changes to it. I'll wait.)

This character has been in the game for a decade, give or take. If, in those ten years, even one single trans person saw the joke and felt hurt, or excluded, or upset by it, then this change was worthwhile. This was a joke that targeted a specific marginalized minority group, to mock them for who they are. It was the definition of "punching down." There's never a valid reason for that.

If you don't agree, I don't know what to tell you. Learning basic empathy is your own job.

If you see Ray Finkle and me as the same thing, then you're the transphobe. Lying about ones actual biological gender is r*pe. Pure and simple. Why is that inc*l logic allowed in our movement?

Open minded means EVERYONE or most people, not just a small subset, should feel welcome and included. That means there are certain things we can't do to each other, since we share this world together. If I feel like punching someone based on my mere feeling, I'm not automatically justified. I have to follow rules too. Also, pretending I'm another biological gender I'm not, will NOT improve dysphoria. Social gender is not biological gender.
