Icy Veins x FFXIV Roadmap and Release!

Recommended Posts

New-Project-2.jpg

Today marks the official launch of our Final Fantasy XIV section on Icy Veins, as well as the first post in what we will hope be a long series of communication between us and our users, showing some of the thought processes, plans, and things we're working on for the FFXIV section!

In today's post, I am going to be covering some of the things that have happened since we first started planning the section, the team we've built, our plans for the future of the section, and so much more. Prior to launching into the bulk of what this post is going to be about, I wanted to take this post as an opportunity to re-introduce myself to our existing users and introduce myself to those of you that are browsing Icy Veins for the first time.

New Logo

Outside of the new information contained in the post below, this is also my opportunity to introduce you all to our brand new logo, specifically for Final Fantasy XIV, which you'll be able to see when browsing the FFXIV section.

IcyxFF.png

Our original logo for Icy Veins has always represented a Mage in WoW, the source of our website's name, but we felt that this simply didn't fit well with FFXIV - instead, we thought a Black Mage was a perfect basis for a new logo to be made, given their affinity for using Frost/Ice spells, and what better way to represent them than their original artifact set?

I really hope you all like the new logo - we tried hard to make it not only fit the aesthetic of Icy Veins and FFXIV, but also incorporate the Fire phases of a Black Mage as well, with the flames at the top of it.

About Me - Section Manager

My name is Valks and, for those of you that have used the site in the past, you may have seen me around over the past 6 years working on a variety of other games on the site, but mainly focusing on the WoW sections, albeit under a different name (Blainie). Since the start of our plans to make an FFXIV section, I have come onto the project as the Section Manager for FFXIV on Icy Veins, with the hopes of bringing my experience working on the WoW sections, as well as a real love of FFXIV and enthusiasm for Lalas, to the project.

The Team

Now, prior to discussing the team, I'd like to make it completely clear that we are not done with recruitment and, for certain areas, we are still getting in touch with new additions to the writing team.

As of posting this, I am going to give as much information as I can on the writers we have brought on, but rather than simply listing a bunch of names, I thought it would be nice to allow the writers to make their own "entrances" as we release their guides, so in the coming weeks, we are going to be working on a "Meet the Team" series of news posts, where we'll be introducing and interviewing the writers 1-by-1, giving them a chance to give a bit of background on themselves, their experience, and why they're the right person for the guide they're writing!

Combat Jobs

As it currently stands, we have writers for nearly every single combat job ahead of Endwalker's release, and very large portion of them are writers and theorycrafters that the players will likely already know from The Balance Discord server. The exception to that, currently, is Summoner, which is going to be written by members of the AkhMorning Summoner team.

Now, while for WoW we generally have 1 writer per spec, we have taken a different approach to the FFXIV Combat Job guide planning, essentially allowing the teams to bring on as many writers as they felt was necessary for the best set of guides we could make. On the WoW section, we have 1 spec with 2 writers (Blood Death Knight), but as of writing this, we currently have nearly 50% of the jobs being written by more than 1 writer.

Crafting & Gathering Jobs

Once again via the Balance, we have taken on 3 writers to handle the world of crafting and gathering in Eorzea, with each of them specialising in varying areas, but we're not done recruiting here. There are a lot of nuances to some of these areas that require extremely specialised knowledge to cover, so we are still in discussions to fill in a spot or two here.

General Guides

Currently, we have a few writers working on general guides for FFXIV, one of which has come through the Balance, but the others are actually simply sourced from the community itself.

News

While those of you that browse our news section frequently are likely familiar with both Stan and Starym, we have actually taken on our first news writer in years to handle the FFXIV section specifically. She will be focusing on ensuring that you can always get the latest news here on Icy Veins about anything FFXIV-related, as well as working with community projects and figures to highlight some of the incredible work the members of the community do every day.

As she has already been posting, some of you may have already seen Alhena around, but you can look forward to reading a bit more about her and her experience when we release our introduction interview with her tomorrow!

Videos

Now this section is likely something that any of our existing users are surprised to see, as Icy Veins has never really pushed much focus onto the video sphere, instead focusing mainly on the written guides we have on the site.

Moving forward into FFXIV, we have currently brought on 2 content creators to work with us on producing videos for a brand new YouTube channel, with others still in discussion, and while I can't share who they are for now, I can't wait for you all to see who it is next week!

The Section & Guides

The Section Today

As many of you have likely noticed, we only have a fairly simple selection of guides live on the site right now, but I can assure you, we have guides written already that are being prepared for publishing and, once we start releasing them, the section is going to be expanding extremely quickly.

The first period prior to publishing the guides on a new section involve a massive amount of planning, preparation, and learning, but I feel that we have done a massive amout of all 3, and we're ready to start pumping content out at a much, much faster rate than before.

The Future (Up to Endwalker and Beyond)

As of right now, we're essentially playing catch-up in terms of the section and the guides - as many of you know if you do play FFXIV, there is a massive amount of content to cover that is already available and has been for many years, but we have no intention of simply taking guides from the past and slapping them onto Icy Veins (especially not without permission, as some felt we would do when this was brought up on Reddit and Twitter).

Once we've managed to clear that "backlog" of guides, we'll be ready to innovate and create, but for the forseeable future up to Endwalker, it's likely that many of the guides we release are the kinds of things that you would simply "expect", especially if you have used our WoW guides before.

With that said, we aren't just going to be boring and not do anything new or interesting, which leads me on to our plans for the future, but not in terms of guides themselves.

Tools

There's going to be a lot more shared on this topic in the future, but we are currently working on the development of a number of tools that we feel would not only benefit the community as a whole, but will also help with the reading, understanding, and creation of our guides here at Icy Veins.

As updates become available for us to share, I'll be keeping you all as up-to-date as possible on the progress of this, but for now, there's little I can tell you all beyond - we're working on it.

Working with the Community

We are currently already reaching out to a number of members of the community, content creators, and so on to try and bring the community not only easier ways of accessing and viewing content and guides, but also potential events and giveaways for the community.

As with the Tools we are working on, this is simply a heads up from me to say, we're working on it, I can't share much on it for now, but I can't wait for the day that I can!

But what if they..?

There are certain worries that were brought to my attention around the time of the initial announcement that, at the time, were very focused on the "fear" of having certain things brought over from our WoW section - we were never planning to do so, but we heard the worries nonetheless, and will always be monitoring the community's reaction and general feeling towards certain pieces before and, if we go ahead with it, after posting them.

Future Updates

For today, that's the extent of everything I can share with you all, but this isn't a one-time post; with our previous sections, we felt that we didn't share enough with our users about what our plans were and what we were working on, instead opting to just go ahead and work without any feedback as to what they would want or be excited for.

With FFXIV, we're looking to move ahead differently - there will be updates posted in the future as we make new plans and changes to our vision of the section, as well as points where we will simply consult our users, to properly see and understand what it is that all of you want to have on the website.

The new Cosmic Exploration activity in FFXIV brings a fun mini-game with it, but is it really worth spending your Lunar Credits? Here is what you need to know!
The latest addition to Final Fantasy XIV is Cosmic Exploration, a brand-new lifestyle activity introduced in Patch 7.2 with the Dawntrail expansion. Much like the Ishgard Restoration before it, Cosmic Exploration is a community-focused feature where players work together to progress and upgrade a new zone, all while earning special rewards.
But be warned, it's a time investment! You'll spend several hours crafting and gathering inside the zone, completing tasks like Stellar Missions, Mech Ops, and Cosmic Research. If crafting and gathering aren't your favorite parts of the game, you might be wondering: is it actually worth the effort for the rewards?

      What Makes It Worth It?
If you enjoy collecting rare mounts, minions, and unique cosmetics, then yes, Cosmic Exploration is absolutely worth your time.
By participating in the activity, you'll earn a new currency called Lunar Credits. These can be spent at the Cosmic Fortune, a special reward system that works like a spinning prize wheel. Every spin costs 1,000 Lunar Credits and gives you a chance at valuable items.

When you spend your credits, a window will pop up showing two different wheels, each displaying a selection of possible rewards. If you're lucky, one of the wheels may turn into a special "rare" wheel featuring better prizes, including the highly desired carrot prize (the best possible reward on that wheel).
The system is random, though. Sometimes you'll land something amazing, other times, not so much. Some wheels only have two options, which can increase your chances of getting something good. There's also a chance for a Stellar Opportunity to appear, which grants you another spin with an upgraded wheel full of even better rewards.
      What Can You Win?
Some of the rarest and most valuable items include:
Vacuum Suit Identification Key (a mount), Cosmosuit Coffer (cosmetic outfit), Micro Rover Minion
If you're a collector or just love trying your luck with fun in-game systems, Cosmic Fortune might be exactly what you're looking for.
For a full guide on how the Cosmic Fortune works and a complete list of all the rewards available, check out our in-depth guide here:

Cosmocredits can be spent on glamours, minions, dyes, and more. Lunar Credits are used for Cosmic Fortunes and Mech Ops. Cosmic Exploration also introduces the Cosmic Tools: Dawntrail's crafting and gathering relic tools. These start at level 10 and are upgraded over time to i720, gaining unique effects along the way.
Much like the Ishgard Restoration, the zone features a ranking system based on three types of contribution:
Missions completed as a Disciple of the Hand or Land Participation in Mech Ops Server-wide Projects (similar to large-scale FATEs that upgrade the region) You can find a real-time Ranking Period tracker in our guide, so you will always know when it's active.
And of course, you have a chance to earn exclusive rewards, including from the Cosmic Fortune — a roulette-style system that lets you roll for rare and valuable items!

      Exotablet
Your exotablet will support your endeavors during cosmic exploration.
      Infrastructure Index
Shows the current status of cosmic exploration.
By completing stellar missions, progress will increase. Once the progress gauge has been filled and the respective project completed, cosmic exploration will proceed to the next stage.

As cosmic exploration proceeds, new types of stellar missions will be added alongside different facilities, such as the Cosmoliner, a means of speedy transportation.
      Stellar Missions
Stellar missions are requests issued to procure necessary materials for cosmic exploration.

Players may accept stellar missions via the exotablet. Completion of stellar missions increases overall progress and unlocks more advanced stellar missions. Missions are scored by three ranks: gold, silver, and bronze. Obtaining a higher score will result in greater returns.

Furthermore, stellar missions are quest synced, ensuring that rewards and difficulty level are distributed appropriately given a player's current level.
After initiating a stellar mission, the following features can be accessed from the Mission in Progress widget:
      Cosmopouch
The cosmopouch is an exclusive inventory reserved for supplies, crafted items, and gathered materials used in cosmic exploration. Cosmic Crafting Log
The cosmic crafting log enables Disciples of the Hand to craft items for stellar missions. Stellar Reduction
Stellar Reduction enables Disciples of the Land to aetherially reduce items for stellar missions. Alongside basic missions exist provisional missions and critical missions. Completing the latter two will yield greater rewards than basic missions.
      Provisional Missions
      Sequential Missions
These missions will become available for five minutes after completing certain stellar missions with a gold star rank.
Sequential missions are created from a variety of missions, and completing them with the highest score possible will cause more to appear. Weather-restricted Missions/Time-restricted Missions
These missions are available during certain times or weather conditions. Critical Missions
Critical missions become available during red alerts.

When a red alert is issued, two gauges will appear at the top of the screen to symbolize progress made for the classes in current demand.
Players may complete critical missions for the designated classes as many times as they choose, earning greater rewards than normal. Each time a critical mission is completed, the respective alert gauge will increase. By cooperating with other players, both gauges may be filled within the time limit, resolving the red alert and granting bonus rewards for all who contributed.

If both gauges are not filled within the allotted time, fewer bonus rewards will be distributed to contributors.
      Mech Ops
Mech ops are large-scale directives issued in Sinus Ardorum that make use of special mechs to complete objectives at designated intervals.

Players may participate as either pilots or ground support.
      Piloting a Mech
When a mech op directive is issued, players may use their exotablets to submit a pilot application, which must first be purchased with lunar credits. Once the entry period has expired, five players will be selected at random from the applicants and assigned to a mech. Players who are not chosen will regain their pilot application. Furthermore, each time a player is not chosen, their chances of being chosen next time will improve.

By completing mech ops, players will obtain a variety of rewards, including tickets to participate in a special type of cosmic fortune, explained further below.
      Ground Support
By traveling to the directive's location and selecting "Join Event" from the duty list, players may participate in a mech op as ground support, assisting the pilots.

By completing mech ops, players will obtain cosmic exploration-specific currency, experience points, and a bonus effect for a set number of stellar missions.
      Cosmic Exploration Projects
Large-scale projects will be triggered as milestones are reached in cosmic exploration.

When a project has been scheduled, a notification will be issued at the top of the screen, and after an allotted time has passed, the project will automatically commence. In order to participate, press the "Join FATE" button while in the designated location.

When a project has been completed, progress will be advanced to the next stage and changes to the field will be reflected. Participants will receive rewards dependent on contribution.
      Currencies
Stellar missions, mech ops, and projects will all yield currencies exclusive to cosmic exploration.
      Cosmocredits
Players may exchange cosmocredits for gear, furnishings, and other items by speaking with Mesouaidonque in Sinus Ardorum (X:21.8 Y:21.8).
      Lunar Credits
Players may exchange lunar credits for mech op pilot applications by speaking with Alerot in Sinus Ardorum (X:22.4 Y:20.3), or use them to draw cosmic fortunes, explained below.
      Stellar Successes
Players may earn rewards by contributing to cosmic exploration in certain ways.

Daily Successes are reset daily, whereas Standard Successes incorporate all contributions made to cosmic exploration. By completing these successes, players can earn rewards like cosmocredits and lunar credits.

You can confirm your current successes via the exotablet.
      Cosmic Fortunes
Cosmic fortunes are roulettes that grant a variety of items as prizes.

Players may exchange lunar credits to draw cosmic fortunes by speaking with Orbitingway in Sinus Ardorum (X:21.8 Y:21.1). Players may pick between two roulettes with differing prizes.

Additionally, a special roulette exists for those in possession of tickets earned from piloting during a mech op.
      Star Contributors
Players with the highest contribution scores at the end of any given ranking period are celebrated as "Star Contributors."
      Calculating Player Contributions
Ranking periods become active or inactive every twenty-four hours, and reset daily at 9:00 (GMT) / 10:00 (BST) / 19:00 (AEST).

During active ranking periods, players' contributions from stellar missions, mech ops, and projects are calculated. Players can check their current standing by speaking with Scanningway in Sinus Ardorum (X:21.2 Y:21.0).
      Commendation
Star Contributors will be honored for fourteen days in the following ways:
A hologram of the player will be displayed in Sinus Ardorum (X:21.1 Y:21.1).
      * The hologram will be established after a certain stage of progress is completed. The player's name will be displayed on the starward standings stela in Sinus Ardorum (X:21.1 Y:21.1). A special visual effect will be applied to the character in cosmic exploration areas. Star Contributors cannot be reselected for fourteen days. However, if the current Star Contributor still holds the highest contribution score on the fourteenth day after being selected, they will be designated as Star Contributor again on the following day.
      Cosmic tools have been added.
By participating in cosmic exploration, players can obtain class-specific tools for Disciples of the Hand and Land which can be enhanced.
      Requirements
Players can unlock cosmic tools by speaking with Researchingway in Sinus Ardorum (X:21.1 Y:21.8).
      Obtaining Cosmic Tools
By using the cosmic prototype coffer obtained by completing the quest "A Cosmic Homecoming," players may obtain the first cosmic tool prototype of their current class.

Players may obtain subsequent prototypes by speaking with Researchingway in Sinus Ardorum (X:21.1 Y:21.8).
      Enhancing Cosmic Tools
By completing stellar missions, players will obtain research data critical for tool enhancement. Cosmic prototypes do not need to be equipped to accrue research data.

Players can confirm required research via "Cosmic Research" on the exotablet.
Once players have accrued sufficient research data, they may report to Researchingway in Sinus Ardorum (X:21.1 Y:21.8). Doing so will allow players to obtain enhanced prototypes and cosmic tools.

While players may obtain numerous cosmic prototypes and tools, research data can only be accrued via stellar missions for any given class.
      New items have been added.
      * Items added in Patch 7.21 will be listed at a later date.
      New dyes have been added.

      New facewear has been added.

In order to prevent server congestion, we will be implementing multiple field instances for Mare Lamentorum and the area newly added in Patch 7.21.
      * We will monitor server activity and remove this feature when congestion is determined to no longer be an issue.

Additionally, this will cause the "Remember Square Enix ID" checkbox to reset, so please be sure to select it once more.

The following issues have been addressed. An issue with AAC Cruiserweight M4 (Savage) wherein the actions Sand Surge and Wind Surge used by certain enemies dealt more damage than intended. An issue when using duty actions wherein the icon indicating the selected target is out of range did not display. An issue wherein certain elite marks could not be targeted. An issue wherein the description for the bard PvE action Barrage listed the incorrect potency for Shadowbite.
      * This was a text-only issue. The potency of the action remains unchanged. An issue when playing as sage wherein an action that cannot be executed or set to the hotbar appeared in the Actions & Traits window. An issue when playing as certain races wherein a portion of the following hairstyles displayed with the incorrect color:
Voidswept Strands, Sharlayan Studies, Sharlayan Rebellion An issue with the following gear wherein applying certain dyes caused material qualities to display incorrectly:
Augmented Temple Circlet, Augmented Temple Cyclas, Augmented Temple Gloves, Augmented Temple Gaskins, Augmented Temple Boots An issue when equipping the leg gear Ninja Hakama, Koga Hakama, or Augmented Ninja Hakama while playing as certain races wherein the graphics displayed incorrectly. An issue wherein the elemental clusters required to craft the newly implemented Cronopio Leather and Diatryma Felt were reversed. An issue wherein a striking dummy erroneously appeared by the Kugane aetheryte plaza. An issue when using the Sit emote and interacting with certain furniture while in an estate hall wherein moving and then stopping erroneously triggered the sitting animation. An issue when using master recipe tomes for which you do not meet the level requirement wherein the recipes did not display in the Crafting Log. An issue with the Wondrous Tails duty "Dungeons (Lv. 1-49)" available at level 99 and below wherein completing the Bowl of Embers, the Navel, or the Howling Eye did not mark the task as complete. An issue during certain quest cutscenes wherein objects erroneously obstructed the view of the player and NPCs.
      * We are continuing to investigate and address this issue. An issue after completing the seasonal quest "Eggceeding Expectations" wherein Egg Hunter Riggy was not added to the toy chest. Other various issues have also been addressed.

An issue when speaking with Scanningway while participating in Cosmic Exploration wherein dialogue relevant to the player's contribution in the previous ranking period is erroneously displayed.
      * Taking part in a Stellar Mission and making a contribution before speaking with Scanningway again will trigger the correct dialogue. An issue with certain Cosmic Exploration reward windows wherein the player is able to move the cursor to areas with no item icon present. An issue with Cosmic Exploration wherein specific NPCs are displayed incorrectly under certain conditions. In order to do so, you need to:
Log into the game and open your friend list or free company member list. Select an offline friend. Right-click on the friend and select "Invite Friend to Return". They will receive an email indicating you wish to invite them back to play Final Fantasy XIV. Your friend needs to return to the game and purchase a subscription within 90 days if you want to get the rewards.
It is important to note that the invited player must have been inactive for at least 90 days, otherwise they will not receive any email. They must also have purchased and registered Final Fantasy XIV to their service account. This will not work for players using the Free Trial.
Each character on a service account can invite up to five friends.
If you are one of the players being called back, here is what you need to do:
Open the email that is registered on your Square Enix account.  Click on 'Redeem Your Rewards' to be redirected to the Final Fantasy XIV: Mog Station. Log into the Mog Station with the same account. Redeem your rewards. Players who are being called back will receive the following exclusive gifts:
7 Days of Free Play. The timer will start from the first day you log back into the game. x99 Aetheryte Tickets. 10 Silver Chocobo Feathers, which you can exchange at the Calamity Salvager in Limsa Lominsa, Gridania, or Ul'dah. For players who call friends back, your friend needs to buy a subscription if you want to receive the 5 Gold Chocobo Feathers, which you can trade at the Calamity Salvager as well.
As a reminder, Gold Chocobo Feathers can be exchanged for rare items such as:
Twintania Neurolink Key. Amber Draught Chocobo Whistle. Mangarm Horn. Aetheryte Ticket x10. Rare Dye x5.

The Chinese App Store may have just given us a hint about the first possible release window for the FFXIV mobile game! Here is everything we know so far!
A few months ago, the first trailer for the upcoming Final Fantasy XIV Mobile Game has been released! Tencent and Square Enix teamed up to create a new version of our favorite MMORPG. If you did not see the trailer, you can watch it here:
The game will most likely be slightly different from your original version, however, it should contain everything you need from story, to mechanics and off-combat functionalities!
Naoki Yoshida is also directing things for the mobile version, and it will be developed by LightSpeed Studio, which is part of Tencent.
Recently, players have noticed a date appeared on the Chinese App Store: 29 August 2025:
While it is unsure if this is the official release date in China, or only for the first playtests, this does indicate that things are moving forward. We should expect more information about the mobile game soon! Maybe some beta for a global release as well.
If you want to be among the first players to join, you can already sign up on the Official FFXIV Mobile Game website as well!
