I'd say wearing the items you find is enough, especially if you take the time to identify items and check vendors for upgrades. Your mileage may vary however depending on your skill as a player as well as your class and build. Sorceresses and Necromancers need very little gear, whereas Barbarians usually need more than others, especially a good weapon.
