Death Knight questions - Siwell

Recommended Posts

I am a casual player and have only recently decided to try and better myself with my DK to do raids (LFR) and dungeons/groups/etc. for my guild. Guild-wise, there are only 5 active members currently as we are just a guild of friends. Tank - DK, Healer - Priest, DPS - Druid, Hunter, Warlock). I am of course the tank for the guild since noone else wanted to play a tank class. However, I lack the confidence/knowledge of events to feel comfortable tanking in an LFR at this time.

I have always toyed around with AMR before one of my friends recommended Icy Veins. I always went with the PvE: Mastery Build but now that I'm trying to take things a little more seriously since we (my guild) can at least do LFRs together, I'm wondering which PvE build might be better? I also just recently noticed on the Mastery and  Hit/Exp build it says may want to goto a 'High' Stam build.

Questions

1) What would be the best PvE build from AMR to use for the guild group?

2) I originally went Frost/Blood but recently switched to Blood/Unholy for my specs. Since my Unholy gear greatly lacks, I tend to run LFRs in my Blood Spec as a DPS since I feel more comfortable in that Spec. Should I just bite the bullet and go DPS as Unholy(switch back to Frost) or is a Blood Spec somewhat acceptible for DPS.

3) Which is more preferable, an Unholy or Frost DK for DPS? I know its more a preference, but I'm just curious which is considered better.

1.) For LFR the particular blood build shouldn't matter too much. If you're just starting out I would probably go with mastery/stam because that will make you a little bit easier to heal if either the healers are really bad, or you make a few mistakes. The avoidance build is mostly for extra dps, but I wouldn't make the switch until you're at least comfortable with the fights.

2.) Blood can do high dps, but only when you're actively tanking something to build vengeance, and since all fights are designed to be 2 tank fights, if you queue as a dps and taunt stuff for vengeance, all you're really doing is taking vengeance away from the other tanks and decreasing their dps to make yours look better. I'd say bite the bullet and play either frost or unholy if you're going to queue as dps (but just queue tank, it's fun!)

3.) Frost vs. Unholy is almost all preference. I find Frost to be much easier to play, but other than trying to learn unholy for about 2 raid weeks recently, the last time I played unholy I was tanking Naxx. I'd say try them both, and play the one you like better.

1. Go with master for now but please don't be one of those tanks who goes into normal sat around 555-560 running mastery XD it's not very efficient I'll say compared to what you could do I would personally switch as soon as possible to learn how to survive as it better now rather then later it's a little more spikey but you'll find it not much less survivability  ^.^

2. I kinda disagree with storm about blood can do high dps, It can but compared to other tanks it's fairly lower other then like specific fights which it does well on. You should probably go dps spec you'll do a lot more damage ^.^

3. At end game unholy does pull a bit ahead (around 30k) if you play it perfectly and depending on the fight i also find unholy more fun but some don't like it cause they don't see the numbers they would like to see do to the fact you have to pay attention to more stuff and it's very easy to make a mistake which can cause you a great deal of damage (Like accidently not snapping your dots with trinket procs or reapplying them early do to a fat finger or etc) But the choice between frost and unholy is completely up to you! But if you do find your self struggling with either spec please come back to the forums and post some logs ask question etc Me and storm always get back to post within a day or two.

I'd personally recommend going for the hit and expertise softcaps and after that Mastery>=Parry> dodge and the rest, seeing youre only starting to get into the raiding scene. When you start feeling more comfortable and confident in your tanking and DS timing you can start switching more mastery to parry.

As stated, tank DPS is very dependant on Vengeance, so definitely roll as your DPS spec if you plan to DPS.

I am not really sure about the specifics but I heard somewhere you can set loot to other specs. This way you can be the bloody tank and still get some good unholy gears.

That's all

Yupp, you can set the loot spec to whichever you want.

I have an ElvUI datatext for it, but if im not mistaken you can change it via right-clicking your portrait and choosing it from the dropdown menu.
