Our Mythic+ writer Petko challenged himself to earn Tormented Hero: Shadowlands Season 2 Tormented Hero: Shadowlands Season 2 on a fresh character before the end of Season 2. Here's Episode 3 of his journey!

The Great Challenge, from Zero to Hero

Hey guys, Petko here! I have decided to challenge myself before the end of the current season, and earn the Tormented Hero: Shadowlands Season 2 Tormented Hero: Shadowlands Season 2 achievement on one of my fresh characters, and since I have done it numerous times in the past, I will guide you through every step of my journey.

In the mini-series, I share my experience and guide you through what you can do to increase your current Mythic+ Rating. The challenge would be boring without some limitations, so here they are!

Rules of the Challenge

If you've missed the previous two episodes of the challenge, make sure to read the articles below. They cover the basics like challenge rules, intentions, end goals, and more.

Chapter 1, Episode 3

As I come closer to collecting the best possible gear across all dungeons, I see a massive difference in the DPS. I went from 235 to 241, although there are still a few pieces that I can obtain and potentially upgrade with Valor Points from Mythic+. For the rest, of the gear, I have to rely on luck from the Great Vault since I have no other source of items but Mythic+.

As I started to break into the +20 key level territory, I've noticed a significant improvement in the player base. Not only do players have a better understanding of their class, utility, and deal higher damage, communication, and MDT theory-crafting, something I never saw below 2,400 rating, also became more prominent. Keep in mind it took a three-week grind to reach this level, even though I had anticipated spending less time, but Alliance pugs are something really special!

Major Challenges and Focus Goals at 2,400 Rating

One of the major challenges I discovered during the keys around +20 level (or around 2,400 score) is that people don't understand the importance of meta picks. Of course, you can do the key without picks like Windwalker Monk or Frost Mage, but they will speed you up the dungeon even if they are below average players, simply because of how good their spec currently is.

  • It gets significantly harder to complete a +20 key with complete randoms from the Group Finder tool, especially with harder affixes. Number 1 priority is to add people of "value" to your Friend List. In other words, specs/classes/players that have performed well in your past runs. That way, you can check your Friend List before searching for randoms through the LFG tool.
  • Having a conversation about routes before your run is equally important, as there are points, where the group might want to skip specific packs, and if your group doesn't have stealth, you must save an invisibility potion and not use an offensive potion instead.
  • Interrupting major casts is still a common issue, so make sure to save your personals to help your tank survive specific pulls.
  • It is unlikely to deplete the key due to having low damage, it happened only once out of my 20 keys that I ran that week, if I had to give you one piece of advice, that would be, to focus on interrupting and playing it safe, rather than doing something extremely risky.
  • It's unlikely your key will get depleted due to the lack of damage. To me, it happened just once out of 20 keys I ran that week.
  • Focus on interrupting and play it safe rather than engaging in anything risky.
  • You should also have essential addons installed. I have already discussed that in this article,  which is still up-to-date and relevant going forward to the next season, take 5 minutes of your time to read it and you will thank me later.

What's the Next Goal?

After earning 2,400 rating, my next goal is to get as close to 2,600 rating as possible without joining voice communication such as Battle-net voice-over, Discord, or TeamSpeak. I know it's going to be extremely hard, but I am confident in my own skills. I also believe that as soon as I get closer to +23 keys and above, I doubt I can do that without the help of voice comms or pre-mades.

So my next goal, along with collecting all of my items from all dungeons, will be adding people to my Friend List that I consider "high value". I play most of my keys during the day, and one of the biggest problems I am facing is the lack of players on the Alliance side in the early hours of the day, compared to the Horde side, where such a thing does not exist.

I hope this issue will be resolved with cross-faction play in the next expansion.

Final Thoughts

I must admit, reaching 2,400 was harder than I had anticipated, mostly, due to my low item level gear combined with no Domination gear, and pre-mades. The challenge taught me to appreciate a lot more what I have.  Even if the gear was from Heroic Raiding, it was still a massive upgrade.

Another major concern was gold. I need to find ways of making gold to help me fund Mythic+ consumables.

Stay tuned for the next episode, and thank you for reading!

Very interesting. I wanted to read the "article" about the addons but the link must be broke cause I get 404 😉

I've fixed the link, thanks for letting us know.

I can't speak with an exact %, but a 239 domination piece with a DPS socket, will do a lot more than 252 ilvl. Roughly around 3-5% bujt that's a napkin math!

We have another triple entry in the hotfix ledger, as Radiant Echoes gets more improvements in retail, while Season of Discovery and Cata Classic get additional class changes.
       August 7  (Source)
      Player-characters
Steady Flight should no longer be removed after entering an Arena. Quests
We tuned up the Prototype Shredder MK-03 so that “Eye for an Eye” can be completed. Radiant Echoes Event
Increased Flightstone and upgrade Crest drop rates in the event. Reduced the HP scaling on all event bosses so that they should be killable in a more-reasonable timeframe. Developers’ notes: This includes both ‘minibosses’ (e.g. Hogger, Thorim) and final bosses (e.g. Remembered Onyxia, Ragnaros). Season of Discovery
Hunter Heart of the Lion once again has a 100 yard range. Warrior The Focused Rage rune will now correctly reduce the cost of Meathook by 3. Cataclysm Classic
Fixed an issue where Faerie Fire did not deal intended amounts of threat when used on NPCs targeting another unit.

Due to a bug introduced with the War Within pre-patch, some players are receiving item level 250 gear from the weekly cache.
We've seen numerous reports on Reddit and the official forums that the Last Hurrah weekly quest on live servers drop low-level gear for some players. Apparently, the bug was first introduced with the War Within pre-patch two weeks ago and still hasn't been fixed.
Here's an example of a low item level drop from the Cache of Awakened Treasures by Omnifox.

Week 2 brings quite a few changes, as Hunters in particular rise up, while Shadow has a really bad time. The top 3 remains the same and very consistent, so let's jump in and see what's going on.
      Warcraft Logs Points
The below logs are based on POINTS, and not actual damage or healing, meaning they log the timed completion for the specs, with higher keys getting more points, obviously. The time in which the dungeon is completed is also a factor, but a much, much smaller one, as it grants very few points if you do it significantly faster than just any in-time completion. We're also using the Normalized Aggregate Scores numbers, for clarity, meaning the top spec is marked as 100 and then the rest are ranked in relation to that peak point.
      All Keys
      95th percentile DPS
The top 3 remains quite stable with the Evoker-Paladin-Warrior trio reigning supreme. We see the first change of the week right after that though, as Frost DK continues its upward march in dungeons as well as in raids, taking 4th from Elemental. Both DKs are on the rise, as Unholy also moves a spot up, taking advantage of Shadow's precipitous 5-spot fall to the bottom of the top 10. Arms remains stable as two Hunters burst in, Beast Mastery taking 8th and Marksmanship 9th, as Frost Mage disappears down towards the bottom. Speaking of the bottom, Devastation gets some new roommates there, as Outlaw and Destruction fall and give Enhancement and Feral a break.

Mythic+ All Keys 95th Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      All Percentiles
As with the top percentiles, the top 3 remains solid, but 4th is immediately changed, thanks to Shadow's massive drop in performance this week. The Priest loses even more ground here, falling 9 spots into 13th, opening 4th up for Arms. Beast Mastery moves even higher here, grabbing 5th and moving in front of Elemental and Frost DK, as Marksmanship brings up the rear and completes the Hunter sandwich in 8th. Affliction breaks into the top 10, just ahead of Unholy which dropped to the final spot.

      Raw DPS U.GG DPS Rankings
U.gg's rankings are based on actual DPS taken from Warcraft Logs data, focusing on the top players and span the past two weeks.
Frost DK finds itself on top in the raw DPS rankings, as Augmentation isn't calculated properly here. Fury and Arms grab the next two spots, moving ahead of Ret, and the Fyr'alath wins continue in 5th, where Unholy finished the legendary axe streak. Even Survival joins the Hunter good times in 8th, where all three specs gather, just ahead of Balance who closes out the top 10.

For even more in-depth data for each individual key head on over to Warcraft Logs. And if you're interested in more info on the specs themselves you can always check out our class guides (updated for the pre-patch), as well as our Mythic+ guides and Mythic+ tier list.

MoP Remix characters that will transfer over to retail will receive a gear boost!
With Patch 11.0.2 now live on Public Test Realms, you can copy over MoP Remix characters from retail! It appears all MoP Remix characters will receive a character boost so you can dive straight into action when the War Within expansion launches.

We can't unfortunately log in to the game with the MoP Remix char on the PTR so we can't confirm the Item Level of gear for max level characters. However, keep in mind that the gear boost will scale with your level, so if you're below max cap, you will receive gear appropriate to your current level.
When Can We Expect MoP Remix Characters to Transfer to Retail?
MoP Remix ends on August 19, so we assume the characters will need to be transferred to retail by August 22 when Early Access begins.
