Everything We Know About Cross-Faction System in Patch 9.2.5

Recommended Posts

Find out more about the cross-faction system coming in Patch 9.2.5 in our latest article!

Cross-faction play will be added to the game in Patch 9.2.5. and the feature allows you to play with players of the opposing faction, with some restrictions.

  • Cross-faction play with features mimicking same faction play is vastly limited to instanced content: Mythic+, Rated Battlegrounds, and raids (Legacy included).
    • Note that you can group up with members of the opposite faction in the open world, but the capabilities are extremely limited (see below for more details).
  • Certain instances with faction-specific content are not cross-faction. This includes Trial of the Champion, Trial of the Crusader, Vault of Archavon, Icecrown Citadel, Baradin Hold, Siege of Boralus, Battle of Dazar'alor, and Darkmaul Citadel.
  • LFR, Normal and Heroic Dungeons, Arena Skirmishes, and Random Battlegrounds are not cross-faction. The same applies to outdoor content like World Quests.
  • You can't just walk up to a random member of the opposite faction and invite them. The whole process has some prerequisites that you must do to make the feature work.
  • To invite a member of the opposite faction to a group, you must be Battle.net Friends with them or a member of a Cross-Faction Community.
  • Another way to group up with the opposite faction is through the Premade Group Finder. However, the leader can choose to restrict the group to the same faction.

  • Communities will play a big role in Patch 9.2.5. Existing ones can be converted to cross-faction, and they work just like guilds. It's easy for members of a cross-faction community to invite each other.

Cross-faction play has some restrictions. In the following section we go through some of the most important ones:

  • Once you're in a cross-faction group, you can't use the opposite faction's portals. You can't use their multi-vendor mounts, you can't get buffed, or trade with them.
  • The "/invite name" command works only if you're Battle.net Friends with the other person or member of the same cross-faction community.
  • You can summon members of the opposite faction to a dungeon, but you'll need another member of your faction to do so. If there's 1 Horde player and 4 Alliance players, you won't be able to summon the other Horde players.
  • You can send gold and items to your Alliance characters with your Horde character if they are on the same realm!
  • You cannot send mail to other factions.
  • In the open world, single-target resurrection does not work, however, Mass Resurrection Mass Resurrection works.
  • In open-world content, you must be in a physical group to understand the other faction, being members of the same community isn't enough.
  • With War Mode enabled, you can group up and attack players of the opposite factions.
  • Once you're in an instanced group (dungeon/raid), you can do anything you would with members of the same faction. You will receive buffs, use multi-vendor mounts, trade gold and items if, on the same realm, you can only use neutral city portals,

I'm confused. The post says this then describes the differences in open world content cross faction and instanced cross faction. Can you group with the other faction in open world?

Also, if you have a cross faction group in war mode then which faction is hostile to your group?

Hopefully it's just an introduction before full integration, so people can finally play together wherever they want. For now, it's only going to help with pugs, so this doesn't solve this issue.

The game has factions. The game should have factions. Factions should mean something.

I reworded the section to make it less confusing.

You can group up with players of the opposite faction in the open world, but you can't really do much. However, instanced content makes cross-faction play feel like playing the same faction.

Alliance players are friendly with all Alliance players in the group whereas Horde players will be friendly with other Horde players. if you're in a cross-faction group with War Mode enabled, the other faction's members of the group will be hostile.

Imagine a new game coming out today with a key feature being that 1/2 the playerbase would not be able to play with the other 1/2.  It would be dead on arrival.  It was a dumb design decision when WoW launched and it's even dumber that it's still around and hasn't been completely eliminated

I agree'nt with you, horde and alliance are always working together, garrosh and sylvanas ended Being overthrown, doesnt makes sense to have factions these times, and IF they managed to put something in game to put horde vs alliance, is going to be something retarded like azerite or horde having another garrosh or sylvanas, meaning that again horde and alliance Will stand up together.

Wow lore is long gone, or the writters fix with something New, and by new i dont mean another bs villain like vin diesel, or purple sea food that are a threat only in our minds (nyathola).

I really hope one Day wow lore Will go back about strong characters fighting and not about a single character with stronger laser beam. The most beloved characters in this game earned their places not by raw power.

Because this isn't going to work, there is no population to sustain such division. Alliance PvE is pretty much dead. Eventually Alliance would cease working as a functional faction when queues would get too long. This is why they introduced mercenary mode for BGs before.

They should mean that I can't play with half of the playerbase?

ESO has factions, three to be precise, they mean something, and I can play with whomever I want.

Well to be honest and fair the Alliance and Horde were meant to be rivaled factions that were to oppose one another throught strife and conflict.  However during the course of WoW's history, via expansions, there were exceptions/moments to work together.  But since WoW is an older game with a changing playerbase Blizzard developers are faced with dilemma of being relevant and up to date against other mmo's like ESO.

The problem with what Blizzard will face is the onset of possible bugs and exploits once the code has been changed to accomodate a full on integration of cross faction gameplay at the players disposal.

We have another triple entry in the hotfix ledger, as Radiant Echoes gets more improvements in retail, while Season of Discovery and Cata Classic get additional class changes.
       August 7  (Source)
      Player-characters
Steady Flight should no longer be removed after entering an Arena. Quests
We tuned up the Prototype Shredder MK-03 so that “Eye for an Eye” can be completed. Radiant Echoes Event
Increased Flightstone and upgrade Crest drop rates in the event. Reduced the HP scaling on all event bosses so that they should be killable in a more-reasonable timeframe. Developers’ notes: This includes both ‘minibosses’ (e.g. Hogger, Thorim) and final bosses (e.g. Remembered Onyxia, Ragnaros). Season of Discovery
Hunter Heart of the Lion once again has a 100 yard range. Warrior The Focused Rage rune will now correctly reduce the cost of Meathook by 3. Cataclysm Classic
Fixed an issue where Faerie Fire did not deal intended amounts of threat when used on NPCs targeting another unit.

Due to a bug introduced with the War Within pre-patch, some players are receiving item level 250 gear from the weekly cache.
We've seen numerous reports on Reddit and the official forums that the Last Hurrah weekly quest on live servers drop low-level gear for some players. Apparently, the bug was first introduced with the War Within pre-patch two weeks ago and still hasn't been fixed.
Here's an example of a low item level drop from the Cache of Awakened Treasures by Omnifox.

Week 2 brings quite a few changes, as Hunters in particular rise up, while Shadow has a really bad time. The top 3 remains the same and very consistent, so let's jump in and see what's going on.
      Warcraft Logs Points
The below logs are based on POINTS, and not actual damage or healing, meaning they log the timed completion for the specs, with higher keys getting more points, obviously. The time in which the dungeon is completed is also a factor, but a much, much smaller one, as it grants very few points if you do it significantly faster than just any in-time completion. We're also using the Normalized Aggregate Scores numbers, for clarity, meaning the top spec is marked as 100 and then the rest are ranked in relation to that peak point.
      All Keys
      95th percentile DPS
The top 3 remains quite stable with the Evoker-Paladin-Warrior trio reigning supreme. We see the first change of the week right after that though, as Frost DK continues its upward march in dungeons as well as in raids, taking 4th from Elemental. Both DKs are on the rise, as Unholy also moves a spot up, taking advantage of Shadow's precipitous 5-spot fall to the bottom of the top 10. Arms remains stable as two Hunters burst in, Beast Mastery taking 8th and Marksmanship 9th, as Frost Mage disappears down towards the bottom. Speaking of the bottom, Devastation gets some new roommates there, as Outlaw and Destruction fall and give Enhancement and Feral a break.

Mythic+ All Keys 95th Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      All Percentiles
As with the top percentiles, the top 3 remains solid, but 4th is immediately changed, thanks to Shadow's massive drop in performance this week. The Priest loses even more ground here, falling 9 spots into 13th, opening 4th up for Arms. Beast Mastery moves even higher here, grabbing 5th and moving in front of Elemental and Frost DK, as Marksmanship brings up the rear and completes the Hunter sandwich in 8th. Affliction breaks into the top 10, just ahead of Unholy which dropped to the final spot.

Mythic+ All Keys All Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      Raw DPS U.GG DPS Rankings
U.gg's rankings are based on actual DPS taken from Warcraft Logs data, focusing on the top players and span the past two weeks.
Frost DK finds itself on top in the raw DPS rankings, as Augmentation isn't calculated properly here. Fury and Arms grab the next two spots, moving ahead of Ret, and the Fyr'alath wins continue in 5th, where Unholy finished the legendary axe streak. Even Survival joins the Hunter good times in 8th, where all three specs gather, just ahead of Balance who closes out the top 10.
Mythic+ All Keystone DPS rankings by u.gg.

For even more in-depth data for each individual key head on over to Warcraft Logs. And if you're interested in more info on the specs themselves you can always check out our class guides (updated for the pre-patch), as well as our Mythic+ guides and Mythic+ tier list.

MoP Remix characters that will transfer over to retail will receive a gear boost!
With Patch 11.0.2 now live on Public Test Realms, you can copy over MoP Remix characters from retail! It appears all MoP Remix characters will receive a character boost so you can dive straight into action when the War Within expansion launches.

We can't unfortunately log in to the game with the MoP Remix char on the PTR so we can't confirm the Item Level of gear for max level characters. However, keep in mind that the gear boost will scale with your level, so if you're below max cap, you will receive gear appropriate to your current level.
When Can We Expect MoP Remix Characters to Transfer to Retail?
MoP Remix ends on August 19, so we assume the characters will need to be transferred to retail by August 22 when Early Access begins.
