Dragonriding: Flying From the Start in Dragonflight, Customizable Mounts and More

Recommended Posts

3DGKLaO.jpg

The reveal focused on one aspect of the new expansion a fair amount, and it is one of the more interesting and new features: Dragonriding. We will be able to fly from the start in Dragonflight, but will also be able to customize our dragon mounts with various new flying features!

We will not only be able to customize our own dragon companion mount visually by choosing its scales, horns, head shape, attachments, armor, etc. but will also have special abilities for it. This will include gathering momentum as you fly, dive-bombing and generally improving and enhancing the mobility of flight. It's a major change and addition to the game, as flying has been pretty much exactly the same since the Burning Crusade when it was introduced, so it will be very interesting to get our hands on this and see how it feels.

Flying and the dragon mount is  going to be available from the start of the expansion, with you gaining more skills for it as you go through it.

Taking to Dragonriding

As players make their way through each of the areas of the Dragon Isles, they’ll partner up with the dragonflights to move through the air as they’ve never done before. They’ll learn the Dragonriding skill which they can level up over time. Unlike what players know of flying, you’ll instead hone your Dragonriding ability and learn to defy gravity while using your momentum and skills to soar to higher heights and explore the Isles.

Players will also be able to customize their new drake mounts with a variety of new options including snout, horns, tails, armor, and more.

But it is not the flying most folks are used to, looks more like the flying system used in Guild Wars 2's Griffon and Skyscale flying.. Will be interesting to see what folks think about it..

Yeah, it doesn't look like full flying. As I've posted in another topic, it looks like those dragons will be used instead of other mounts (that also include dragons!). Frankly, it sounds rather boring to me. Everyone will be on the same mount, maybe with some different colors and customization. I prefer to use something like lightforged warframe or those magical discs. It's probably also something that won't be relevant past these zones.

A form of flying I was banned permanently from Guild Wars 2 before being able to fully experience by politically-tribalist WoWhead mod-like customer service reps.

Guild Wars 2 deserves expansion money even less than World of Warcraft does.

This is the sort of abuse Guild Wars 2 abets and bans victims of instead for getting angry about - following someone around harassing them throughout the game for hours on end for days and months straight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOxnK8fWLFU .

Putting this comment wherever Me me me puts his coy ad for that game.

It does look like there might be some skills that you will learn over time. I guess dragon will fall on the ground if you just afk during flight.

The weird thing is, we already rode many dragons. But somehow we have to learn how to ride these? And are we unable to use the ones we already have?

If that's the case this might blow up hard on them once the general population catches on.

"What?    I have this winged dragon in the expansion called dragonflight but you're timegating flying on him for two tiers and a few achievements I wouldn't bother with otherwise?"

Always one step forward, two steps back with Blizzard learning what players actually want and listening to feedback (that first part of the video of them talking about listening to feedback was painful to hear...)

Many people might be upset about it, despite initial excitement. It's also weird how you suddenly can't ride dozens of other dragon mounts, but only this one you just received. There is no story reason for it, just gameplay reason. We didn't have to learn how to ride dragons before, now we do? And just for these few zones?

Good. That alone tempts me to buy this expansion just to reward WoW for taking that from them. The thousands of dollars they stole from me means I am glad to help WoW steal thousands more from them with this idea.

And the idea that I'd ever give them money for another expansion should tell you just how much I hate GW2 for what they did to me. I am not one to support the "lesser of two evils" in any situation.

In fact, if I had chosen such in the past few US elections instead of not voting for either side of the culture war, GW2 would've given me a free legendary instead of permabanning me, clearly.

Steal, WoW. Steal steal steal. Run GW2 into the dirt and I'll pay you despite the fact that you psychologically tortured me for years with your "misunderstood" undead Melisandre/Daenerys/Cersei clone. Maybe then you'll be able to afford to undo what you blamed on Afrasiabi - and restore Teldrassil, along with Brennadam, Theramore, Camp Taura'jo, and Southshore, and all of their citizens, to boot.

If the first one is truly his fault then I'm not asking any more than you already did with the game after he was outed in the lawsuit.

And its certainly better than following in the footsteps of GW2 and Lion's Arch like WoW has been, that's for sure. Make a fantasy instead of realism. Steve Danuser's and GW2's sense of reality is Hannibal Lecter's sense of mental help - which is clearly why he's such a Mads Mikkelsen fan.

tl;dr Steal what does work and leave what doesn't. Rob GW2 blind and leave them with their tribalist safe space and no one to scam with their gem shop and capriciously-enforced ToS.

I completely disagree.

The moment we fly, in any zone, I completely ignore the exploration aspect, and it makes the world tiny.

You just turn into a - fly there fast to complete task asap - robot.

Zereth Mortis turned real sad after we learned to fly.

That has to be the shittiest comment reply shoving what was done to me - as displayed in that video and explained in the description below it - under the rug I've ever seen. What the actual *filtered*.

You should go post on Wowhead's forum where everyone has your level of empathy and intelligence.

I may make *filtered* videos, but at least I'm not a brainless, heartless, soulless defender of shitty corporations like you. Hey, they can do whatever the *filtered* they want to whoever the *filtered* they want thanks to you. You must be proud to be such an enabler of corporate megalomania.

I hope someone follows you around GW2 harassing you for the next year non stop calling your female character a b*****, you get banned for getting upset about it and the bias from CS devs, and then you get the same level of empathy/sympathy you showed me for that happening to me.

But of course, you will end up evading karma once again as usual. Mob rule, to paraphrase Ion Hazzikostas, "working as intended".

Maybe if I sold my soul to a corporation, religion, or government I could make good videos. Worked for Guild Wars 2, World of Warcraft, religious fanatics, and darkmatter2525.

Then again I'd rather just give one of them $60 to enjoy what your favorite corporation kept me from enjoying while saying "you did it to yourself".

Go ahead and sue them for IP infringement if you're so triggered by the white cis male ancap atheist who isn't part of your political/religious cult getting to enjoy what he spent thousands to enjoy years ago and ended up getting his "privilege" checked over.

Sue them so hard that you end up homeless with necrosis and maggots in your feet. Then you'll get to enjoy the privilege I enjoyed last year, you power tripping smug *filtered*. You sure will regardless of whether you end up homeless if you keep dismissing everything I post as "shitty" and keep calling types like Trump and Biden and Putin "woke" - go buy a farm downwind of the nearest city, by the way.

We have another triple entry in the hotfix ledger, as Radiant Echoes gets more improvements in retail, while Season of Discovery and Cata Classic get additional class changes.
       August 7  (Source)
      Player-characters
Steady Flight should no longer be removed after entering an Arena. Quests
We tuned up the Prototype Shredder MK-03 so that “Eye for an Eye” can be completed. Radiant Echoes Event
Increased Flightstone and upgrade Crest drop rates in the event. Reduced the HP scaling on all event bosses so that they should be killable in a more-reasonable timeframe. Developers’ notes: This includes both ‘minibosses’ (e.g. Hogger, Thorim) and final bosses (e.g. Remembered Onyxia, Ragnaros). Season of Discovery
Hunter Heart of the Lion once again has a 100 yard range. Warrior The Focused Rage rune will now correctly reduce the cost of Meathook by 3. Cataclysm Classic
Fixed an issue where Faerie Fire did not deal intended amounts of threat when used on NPCs targeting another unit.

Due to a bug introduced with the War Within pre-patch, some players are receiving item level 250 gear from the weekly cache.
We've seen numerous reports on Reddit and the official forums that the Last Hurrah weekly quest on live servers drop low-level gear for some players. Apparently, the bug was first introduced with the War Within pre-patch two weeks ago and still hasn't been fixed.
Here's an example of a low item level drop from the Cache of Awakened Treasures by Omnifox.

Week 2 brings quite a few changes, as Hunters in particular rise up, while Shadow has a really bad time. The top 3 remains the same and very consistent, so let's jump in and see what's going on.
      Warcraft Logs Points
The below logs are based on POINTS, and not actual damage or healing, meaning they log the timed completion for the specs, with higher keys getting more points, obviously. The time in which the dungeon is completed is also a factor, but a much, much smaller one, as it grants very few points if you do it significantly faster than just any in-time completion. We're also using the Normalized Aggregate Scores numbers, for clarity, meaning the top spec is marked as 100 and then the rest are ranked in relation to that peak point.
      All Keys
      95th percentile DPS
The top 3 remains quite stable with the Evoker-Paladin-Warrior trio reigning supreme. We see the first change of the week right after that though, as Frost DK continues its upward march in dungeons as well as in raids, taking 4th from Elemental. Both DKs are on the rise, as Unholy also moves a spot up, taking advantage of Shadow's precipitous 5-spot fall to the bottom of the top 10. Arms remains stable as two Hunters burst in, Beast Mastery taking 8th and Marksmanship 9th, as Frost Mage disappears down towards the bottom. Speaking of the bottom, Devastation gets some new roommates there, as Outlaw and Destruction fall and give Enhancement and Feral a break.

Mythic+ All Keys 95th Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      All Percentiles
As with the top percentiles, the top 3 remains solid, but 4th is immediately changed, thanks to Shadow's massive drop in performance this week. The Priest loses even more ground here, falling 9 spots into 13th, opening 4th up for Arms. Beast Mastery moves even higher here, grabbing 5th and moving in front of Elemental and Frost DK, as Marksmanship brings up the rear and completes the Hunter sandwich in 8th. Affliction breaks into the top 10, just ahead of Unholy which dropped to the final spot.

Mythic+ All Keys All Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      Raw DPS U.GG DPS Rankings
U.gg's rankings are based on actual DPS taken from Warcraft Logs data, focusing on the top players and span the past two weeks.
Frost DK finds itself on top in the raw DPS rankings, as Augmentation isn't calculated properly here. Fury and Arms grab the next two spots, moving ahead of Ret, and the Fyr'alath wins continue in 5th, where Unholy finished the legendary axe streak. Even Survival joins the Hunter good times in 8th, where all three specs gather, just ahead of Balance who closes out the top 10.
Mythic+ All Keystone DPS rankings by u.gg.

For even more in-depth data for each individual key head on over to Warcraft Logs. And if you're interested in more info on the specs themselves you can always check out our class guides (updated for the pre-patch), as well as our Mythic+ guides and Mythic+ tier list.

For the next two weeks, the Archaeology quest for Spirit of Eche'ro is available on live servers, so don't forget to get the rare mount before it's gone for 6 months!
How to Get the Spirit of Eche'ro Mount
      1. Download MapCoords or some other add-os that displays coordinates in the game.
      2. Teleport to Azsuna from the Stormwind/Orgrimmar Portal Room or use your Dalaran Hearthstone to reach Dalaran (Legion) if you have one in your inventory.
      3. Seek out Archaeology Trainer Dariness the Learned in Dalaran at 41,26 and learn Archaeology if you already haven't.
      4. Accept The Right Path quest from the Archaeology Trainer and make your way to Thunder Totem in Highmountain.
      5. Talk to Lessah Moonwater to accept Laying to Rest. For the quest, you must collect 600 Bone Fragments of Eche'ro by rotating between four digsites in Highmountain. The exact locations with coords are outlined below.
Digsite 1: Darkfeather Valley (50, 44) Digsite 2: Dragon's Falls (58, 72) Digsite 3: Path of Huin (44, 72) Digsite 4: Whitewater Wash (39, 65) it takes roughly around 2 hours to get the mount.
      Spirit of Eche'ro
"The spirit of Huln Highmountain's pet moose."

Hurry up! You only have until August 21, 2024, to get the mount!

MoP Remix characters that will transfer over to retail will receive a gear boost!
With Patch 11.0.2 now live on Public Test Realms, you can copy over MoP Remix characters from retail! It appears all MoP Remix characters will receive a character boost so you can dive straight into action when the War Within expansion launches.

We can't unfortunately log in to the game with the MoP Remix char on the PTR so we can't confirm the Item Level of gear for max level characters. However, keep in mind that the gear boost will scale with your level, so if you're below max cap, you will receive gear appropriate to your current level.
When Can We Expect MoP Remix Characters to Transfer to Retail?
MoP Remix ends on August 19, so we assume the characters will need to be transferred to retail by August 22 when Early Access begins.
