Ion Hazzikostas on the Giant Sword Stuck in Silithus & Dragonflight Alpha

Recommended Posts

In a Buffed.de interview, Ion talked about the big splinter stuck in Azeroth and Dragonflight Alpha.

In the interview, Buffed.de asked Ion about the giant sword stuck in Azeroth and if there were any plans to include a new story around it in Dragonflight. Ion said it's just a splinter and we used our artifacts to cleanse it and there will be no new story around it in Dragonflight, the new expansion solely focuses on Dragon Isles.

"We used our artifacts to drain the corruption from the sword in 2018. Everything is fine. It's just a big splinter. But no, this is a story that really focuses on the new continent of the Dragon Isles. As always, there are going to be some stories that touch Stormwind, Orgrimmar, or other major parts of Eastern Kingdoms or Kalimdor. But we're not updating or doing significant new stuff in the old zones. It's really about the Dragon Isles."

Ion Hazzikostas

Another interesting question was regarded Dragonflight and when can we roughly expect F&F Alpha to start. Dragonflight is something they started working on years ago.

Not an exact timetable. Soon! I don't want to make any commitments that we might not be able to meet. But this expansion is quite far long. It's a lot of work that's been going into it over the last couple of years. I can't wait to welcome people into our test servers and get their feedback. But you'll hear more from us on that soon.

It sounds more like: We just have zero idea what to do with it.

Sound like it's there for a later story, we did what we could with the sword already there is no1 on azeroth that can pull it out atm. Ppl with this "they forgot the sword", "i want it removed NOW!4!4!, reeeeee" attitude are so annyoing.

In this case he could answer: Yes we didn´t forget the sword. We know where to find it 😉

But just to tell: "...its just a big splinter" sounds like what I wrote before for me. Its my opinion. Maybe it´s for a later story or not. The time will tell us 😃 Its just the way he did say it.

Not at all, he's been pretty clear and it's absolutely logic.

It's just a big splinter cause we drained all of the corruption.

There is absolutely no more threat from the sword and as it's been said before, nobody is able to remove it just to.. remove it.

Still waiting for a fluffy Sargeras version with pink hairs and an unicorn on his forehead to remove the sword and making some people happy. 🤣

That said, joke aside, I'm seriously curious about what's people ideas to remove it ?

I really want to ear about it, no joke. (it might be some cool suggestions)

I would say, it's not really about wanting to remove it, for me personally... but the sword just doesn't get adressed. It was THE Major thing that happened at the end of Legion. It was what we sacrificed our artifact weapons for. And then it just was there. For four years, without any major mention of it, while we had to visit it daily in BFA.

It just doesn't feel like there is any... plan anywhere around it. If the sword was literally just to drain our artifacts and now be there, kind of a waste of a great cinematic moment if you ask me? Sure it also spilled Azerite all over and all, but you know, that's just introducing the next expansion.

I personally don't think it would be removed, I just think it would get... attention. I mean, imagine an elongated sword shape meteorite hitting earth, bringing devastation to part of the planet and then releasing new ressources... you wouldn't just go 'Well, I guess it's there now' For the next four years. You would want to know what happens with it now. And given this is a fantasy universe, there should probably be something out there to deal with it.

100%

Its More like a syringe that went in to significant subdermal parts of your body and then left there to dangle. Sure the poison was safely removed but that’s not cool to leave that dangling.

I mean even that is simplistic, that sword is long enough to at least make it to the core of the planet and it’s in up to the hilt. A splinter isn’t long enough to pierce your organs. Look at the cinematic, That’s a cop out, don’t excuse lazy writing or answers.

You're asking how to do away with a magical object in a world where enchanting exists? Kinda-kidding here.

As for possible magical solutions...

In the novel, Jaina is depicted at one point changing the size of Blue Dragonflight's Focusing Iris from a ~Tauren-size ball to something she could effortlessly carry in her hands, so size-changing magic does exist, and she even described as "experimenting", rather than being an avid practicioner. Power it up enough, and you just shrink the thing.

Apart for that, I recall transmutation magic also does exist in WoW, so if it truly has no magic in it left, just turning metal into sand or smth might work.

Finally the Council of Six have moved Dalaran around the planet twice with teleportation, not sure how larger Gorribal is in terms of mass.

Aside from what we've already done, draining it using our artifacts to prevent it from poisoning Azeroth, I don't know what more can be done. If it is removed would the sword just vanish or would the whole length of it be brought down on Azeroth, potentially crushing far more than just Silithus? Then there's the wound leftover, sure we have shaman and druids that could probably heal it similar to Shen-zin Su back in the Pandaran starting zone but just how far does it go and would their magics reach that far?

...that's a ret con.   🤬

If you go back to us on the boat using our Artifact weapons, we did drain the corruption that was killing Azeroth, like, right now (then).   But Magni clearly went on to say that the sword being stuck there was causing Azerite to bleed out slowly from Azeroth and is now just a slow death if we don't do something.

You know, the whole plot of BFA...before we got distracted by blood trolls, pirates, mechagnomes, naga and hey there's a N'zoth!

We never actually addressed the slow bleed-death of Azeroth at any point while Blizzard slung story arcs left and right hoping something would stick good.     Wasting good villains like Azsharra and Nzoth in the process.     I always envisioned Magni after we killed Nzoth and we headed into the Shadowlands baying "Chammppioooon!???!?" like a dog being left behind by its owner.

Ion stating it's a splinter is pretty much of an acknowledgement that they have not forgotten about the sword. Just at the moment, has no purpose as the previous guy had mentioned. So it makes sense that Ion would refer to it as a splinter for the time being.

My take is that when Azeroth reawakens she then wields the sword and becomes the new Sargeras and wipes out the heroes of azeroth. Just kidding. But lowkey wouldn't be surprised if that was the case in the future, their story telling has been pretty lackluster with some questionable decisions... lol.

It was bleeding, but maybe it got better! Magni made some sort of Azerite-plug and sealed it completely! 😜

Please never use the words "Magni" and "Azerite-Plug" again in the same sentence.

But yeah...it still burns a bit that we had that huge, epic lead in to BFA with the sword being stabbed, used our artifact weapons to buy time...and...?????.....Profit?      Wow Storytelling is apparently still driven by the current expansion, the rest may as well have never happened.

Just occurred to me that I've seen a Universe with chaotic bloodthirsty alien demons invading a planet protected by artificially created servants of "good". And ironically, the studio's logo is a planet impaled through with a sword.

Nothing new under the Sun. Hopefully, the result would be different or Azeroth is meeting a fierfy apocalypse, like in that Universe.

Same reason they "forgot" about Vindicaar which could end many battles with one shot, because "it doesn't fit the scene". Let's bring catapults and old timey cannons into a battle instead!

Can't the dwarves just salvage it away bit by bit. Elves weakening pieces through disenchantment, and dwarves harvesting the pieces off?

At least fulfill my vision and give me elf and dwarf npcs tinkering away on it throughout scaffolding 😂

The Vindicaar is what's performing the Lightforged Draenei's racial, Light's Judgement.

It's the exact same Vindicaar power that you receive on Argus when you do the intro quest.

Stupid questions deserve stupid answers. The same ppl crying about the sword would scream bad writing if they just removed it a dumb way now. Wanting to close every storyline is that leads to actual bad writing imo.

Also goblin and gnomish engineering should be plotting ways to get as much "blood of sargeras" out of it as we want, and turn those in to that vendor in Dal for other stuff that isn't soulbound, so more flowers means more flasks for raiding, and...

...profit !

Hm.

Maybe this can be the "order hall by profession" expansion.
Maybe the bandage trainers can teach those healers over at the silithus wound a thing or five.

We have another triple entry in the hotfix ledger, as Radiant Echoes gets more improvements in retail, while Season of Discovery and Cata Classic get additional class changes.
       August 7  (Source)
      Player-characters
Steady Flight should no longer be removed after entering an Arena. Quests
We tuned up the Prototype Shredder MK-03 so that “Eye for an Eye” can be completed. Radiant Echoes Event
Increased Flightstone and upgrade Crest drop rates in the event. Reduced the HP scaling on all event bosses so that they should be killable in a more-reasonable timeframe. Developers’ notes: This includes both ‘minibosses’ (e.g. Hogger, Thorim) and final bosses (e.g. Remembered Onyxia, Ragnaros). Season of Discovery
Hunter Heart of the Lion once again has a 100 yard range. Warrior The Focused Rage rune will now correctly reduce the cost of Meathook by 3. Cataclysm Classic
Fixed an issue where Faerie Fire did not deal intended amounts of threat when used on NPCs targeting another unit.

Due to a bug introduced with the War Within pre-patch, some players are receiving item level 250 gear from the weekly cache.
We've seen numerous reports on Reddit and the official forums that the Last Hurrah weekly quest on live servers drop low-level gear for some players. Apparently, the bug was first introduced with the War Within pre-patch two weeks ago and still hasn't been fixed.
Here's an example of a low item level drop from the Cache of Awakened Treasures by Omnifox.

Week 2 brings quite a few changes, as Hunters in particular rise up, while Shadow has a really bad time. The top 3 remains the same and very consistent, so let's jump in and see what's going on.
      Warcraft Logs Points
The below logs are based on POINTS, and not actual damage or healing, meaning they log the timed completion for the specs, with higher keys getting more points, obviously. The time in which the dungeon is completed is also a factor, but a much, much smaller one, as it grants very few points if you do it significantly faster than just any in-time completion. We're also using the Normalized Aggregate Scores numbers, for clarity, meaning the top spec is marked as 100 and then the rest are ranked in relation to that peak point.
      All Keys
      95th percentile DPS
The top 3 remains quite stable with the Evoker-Paladin-Warrior trio reigning supreme. We see the first change of the week right after that though, as Frost DK continues its upward march in dungeons as well as in raids, taking 4th from Elemental. Both DKs are on the rise, as Unholy also moves a spot up, taking advantage of Shadow's precipitous 5-spot fall to the bottom of the top 10. Arms remains stable as two Hunters burst in, Beast Mastery taking 8th and Marksmanship 9th, as Frost Mage disappears down towards the bottom. Speaking of the bottom, Devastation gets some new roommates there, as Outlaw and Destruction fall and give Enhancement and Feral a break.

Mythic+ All Keys 95th Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      All Percentiles
As with the top percentiles, the top 3 remains solid, but 4th is immediately changed, thanks to Shadow's massive drop in performance this week. The Priest loses even more ground here, falling 9 spots into 13th, opening 4th up for Arms. Beast Mastery moves even higher here, grabbing 5th and moving in front of Elemental and Frost DK, as Marksmanship brings up the rear and completes the Hunter sandwich in 8th. Affliction breaks into the top 10, just ahead of Unholy which dropped to the final spot.

Mythic+ All Keys All Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      Raw DPS U.GG DPS Rankings
U.gg's rankings are based on actual DPS taken from Warcraft Logs data, focusing on the top players and span the past two weeks.
Frost DK finds itself on top in the raw DPS rankings, as Augmentation isn't calculated properly here. Fury and Arms grab the next two spots, moving ahead of Ret, and the Fyr'alath wins continue in 5th, where Unholy finished the legendary axe streak. Even Survival joins the Hunter good times in 8th, where all three specs gather, just ahead of Balance who closes out the top 10.
Mythic+ All Keystone DPS rankings by u.gg.

For even more in-depth data for each individual key head on over to Warcraft Logs. And if you're interested in more info on the specs themselves you can always check out our class guides (updated for the pre-patch), as well as our Mythic+ guides and Mythic+ tier list.

MoP Remix characters that will transfer over to retail will receive a gear boost!
With Patch 11.0.2 now live on Public Test Realms, you can copy over MoP Remix characters from retail! It appears all MoP Remix characters will receive a character boost so you can dive straight into action when the War Within expansion launches.

We can't unfortunately log in to the game with the MoP Remix char on the PTR so we can't confirm the Item Level of gear for max level characters. However, keep in mind that the gear boost will scale with your level, so if you're below max cap, you will receive gear appropriate to your current level.
When Can We Expect MoP Remix Characters to Transfer to Retail?
MoP Remix ends on August 19, so we assume the characters will need to be transferred to retail by August 22 when Early Access begins.
