Alpha to Release Gap, 5th Profession Bag, Dracthyr Armor and No Tank, New Old Dungeons and More: Dragonflight Group Interview

Recommended Posts

Game Director Ion Hazzikostas answered many Dragonflight related questions in a group interview today, and we're taking a look at the highlights.

A Change in Focus for the Alpha and Testing in General

  • They are comfortable with the Alpha to release timing. DF has been in production since Shadowlands shipped and they purposefully decided to have a shorter and more focused testing period - they started the Alpha on a much more finished version of the expansion than before. New content will be coming to the Alpha a lot faster in the coming weeks, with previous zones being shut down and only new ones being available for testing week after week to get focused feedback.
  • The change in testing style is only related to the testing itself, the game is being developed same as it always has. Ideally they'd want to just publish an expansion without any outside testing, but aren't quite there yet.

Dracthyr Armor, Reasons for no Tank Spec

  • "Certain key pieces show in your draconic form–shoulders, large geometric pieces like belt buckles. When we make things like tier sets, we know that this armor is custom-made for the Evoker, and so we can do more things than we could do elsewhere.
But yes, in your visage form, it’s all visible all the time. We want to make sure people are seeing their visage form more than say a Worgen sees their humanoid form, depending on personal preference."
  • Dracthyr don't have a tank spec due to the race fantasy. Also After Demon Hunters arrived the number of tanks didn't significantly increase, so it wouldn't have helped with the tank shortage.
"A breath weapon and wings and mobility and all that felt like it lent itself more to a ranged-based class, a caster. And caster abilities don’t always work well with tanking, so we didn’t go in that direction with that fantasy. Future classes may have tank specs."

Mythic+

  • Two returning dungeons will be Court of Stars and Temple of the Jade Serpent.
  • Encounter design in regards to tanks not needing to do as much is a big focus.

Master/Group Loot

  • Master loot isn't returning but a type of Group Loot is in raids only:
"But moving away from personal to [a] shared pool of loot, where you kill a raid boss, you work together with 15 or 20 or 30 people to do it, there’s 5 items on the corpse [and] you can roll for those items, you can pass on them, you can trade them to your friends; that’s a world we think we want to be in again. We’re still hammering out the details, but our current plan is to have raid bosses in Dragonflight work that way. This is a raid boss specific system. Dungeon loot is fine."

Other

  • One of the major inspirations for DF was Mists of Pandaria, both visually but also in the exploration aspect and gradual buildup of the big bad/plot.
  • The 5th bag slot is for all profession materials, and will be a LOT bigger than any regular bags.
"Not literally endless, but the intent is Big. It’s not meant to be a meaningful constraint on picking stuff up, or herbing, or gathering."
  • Not all DF mounts will be in the Dragonriding system, as it is separate.
  • The hope is that players like the Dragonriding system so much they will want it to stay and then the devs would be happy to carry it over into following expansions as well.
"What this means for the future, I think is an open question. We want to be guided by what players prefer. There’s certainly a world where months from now, with Dragonriding fully upgraded, no one is asking for the return of Burning Crusade style flying, and they’re just like ‘this is awesome! It’s faster! It’s way more fun!’ cool, we’ll happily run with that. If people feel otherwise, then we’re open to that too. But we’ll see."
  • Blizzard have been working with Proletariat for a couple of months already, before the acquisition was announced.

There's much, MUCH more to read in the group interview over on Wowhead, as Ion not only dives a lot deeper into the above topics, but also cover many more topics!

???

They literally made them up for this xpac. There is no race fantasy.

The caster excuse is also dumb. They are dragons. They have claws, scales, and teeth that all work perfectly in close range and it would make perfect sense for them to enhance themselves with black dragon earth magic to make them tougher. If shamans, a caster class, can have a melee spec, why can't evokers??

It just seems like they're lazy.

Probably just an excuse to not make third spec, just like DH only has two. Lore is whatever they want it to be, after all it's a whole new races of dragon-like creatures. I also don't see any good reasons why they can't be any other class. For in-universe reasons, they could just explain it that after awakening some have found out their powers disappeared, so they looked for alternate sources of magic or in other cases they started to train themselves with weapons for martial classes. Same with Evokers, they could potentially be anyone, simply invent explanation how some worthy mortals have been given these powers.

My Brother in Light, you just said what the Vengeance DH tanking kit was, there's no reason that couldn't also work for Evoker.
The only thing I can see being kinda problematic is the "empower" mechanic for an Evoker tank, as you sometimes don't want to be locked in place while tanking (see Fel Dev/Eye Beam), but I imagine that could be resolved with a talent that allows them to always be max empower, but reduce the cap on the empower by half. I know that is possible, as seeing how both Evoker specs have a talent that increases the empower of some abilities by 1, and also has the 2min cd to make the next empower instant cast with max empower.

one question, does the dragon form share the same gear you currently use as humanoid form, or they'll just use the cosmetic pieces that you can choose from the character creation part?

We have another triple entry in the hotfix ledger, as Radiant Echoes gets more improvements in retail, while Season of Discovery and Cata Classic get additional class changes.
       August 7  (Source)
      Player-characters
Steady Flight should no longer be removed after entering an Arena. Quests
We tuned up the Prototype Shredder MK-03 so that “Eye for an Eye” can be completed. Radiant Echoes Event
Increased Flightstone and upgrade Crest drop rates in the event. Reduced the HP scaling on all event bosses so that they should be killable in a more-reasonable timeframe. Developers’ notes: This includes both ‘minibosses’ (e.g. Hogger, Thorim) and final bosses (e.g. Remembered Onyxia, Ragnaros). Season of Discovery
Hunter Heart of the Lion once again has a 100 yard range. Warrior The Focused Rage rune will now correctly reduce the cost of Meathook by 3. Cataclysm Classic
Fixed an issue where Faerie Fire did not deal intended amounts of threat when used on NPCs targeting another unit.

Due to a bug introduced with the War Within pre-patch, some players are receiving item level 250 gear from the weekly cache.
We've seen numerous reports on Reddit and the official forums that the Last Hurrah weekly quest on live servers drop low-level gear for some players. Apparently, the bug was first introduced with the War Within pre-patch two weeks ago and still hasn't been fixed.
Here's an example of a low item level drop from the Cache of Awakened Treasures by Omnifox.

Week 2 brings quite a few changes, as Hunters in particular rise up, while Shadow has a really bad time. The top 3 remains the same and very consistent, so let's jump in and see what's going on.
      Warcraft Logs Points
The below logs are based on POINTS, and not actual damage or healing, meaning they log the timed completion for the specs, with higher keys getting more points, obviously. The time in which the dungeon is completed is also a factor, but a much, much smaller one, as it grants very few points if you do it significantly faster than just any in-time completion. We're also using the Normalized Aggregate Scores numbers, for clarity, meaning the top spec is marked as 100 and then the rest are ranked in relation to that peak point.
      All Keys
      95th percentile DPS
The top 3 remains quite stable with the Evoker-Paladin-Warrior trio reigning supreme. We see the first change of the week right after that though, as Frost DK continues its upward march in dungeons as well as in raids, taking 4th from Elemental. Both DKs are on the rise, as Unholy also moves a spot up, taking advantage of Shadow's precipitous 5-spot fall to the bottom of the top 10. Arms remains stable as two Hunters burst in, Beast Mastery taking 8th and Marksmanship 9th, as Frost Mage disappears down towards the bottom. Speaking of the bottom, Devastation gets some new roommates there, as Outlaw and Destruction fall and give Enhancement and Feral a break.

Mythic+ All Keys 95th Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      All Percentiles
As with the top percentiles, the top 3 remains solid, but 4th is immediately changed, thanks to Shadow's massive drop in performance this week. The Priest loses even more ground here, falling 9 spots into 13th, opening 4th up for Arms. Beast Mastery moves even higher here, grabbing 5th and moving in front of Elemental and Frost DK, as Marksmanship brings up the rear and completes the Hunter sandwich in 8th. Affliction breaks into the top 10, just ahead of Unholy which dropped to the final spot.

Mythic+ All Keys All Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      Raw DPS U.GG DPS Rankings
U.gg's rankings are based on actual DPS taken from Warcraft Logs data, focusing on the top players and span the past two weeks.
Frost DK finds itself on top in the raw DPS rankings, as Augmentation isn't calculated properly here. Fury and Arms grab the next two spots, moving ahead of Ret, and the Fyr'alath wins continue in 5th, where Unholy finished the legendary axe streak. Even Survival joins the Hunter good times in 8th, where all three specs gather, just ahead of Balance who closes out the top 10.
Mythic+ All Keystone DPS rankings by u.gg.

For even more in-depth data for each individual key head on over to Warcraft Logs. And if you're interested in more info on the specs themselves you can always check out our class guides (updated for the pre-patch), as well as our Mythic+ guides and Mythic+ tier list.

MoP Remix characters that will transfer over to retail will receive a gear boost!
With Patch 11.0.2 now live on Public Test Realms, you can copy over MoP Remix characters from retail! It appears all MoP Remix characters will receive a character boost so you can dive straight into action when the War Within expansion launches.

We can't unfortunately log in to the game with the MoP Remix char on the PTR so we can't confirm the Item Level of gear for max level characters. However, keep in mind that the gear boost will scale with your level, so if you're below max cap, you will receive gear appropriate to your current level.
When Can We Expect MoP Remix Characters to Transfer to Retail?
MoP Remix ends on August 19, so we assume the characters will need to be transferred to retail by August 22 when Early Access begins.
