flimboo 0 Report post Posted September 8, 2014 Hello, so i just started playing WOW finally and I choosed mage as my main charec. right now am level 50+ and I am playing with my friends (recruit a friend) we only play dungeons to speed leveling up. since we only play dungeons we dont get that much of good gears am using https://www.icy-veins.com/forums/topic/2605-frost-mage-leveling-guide-1-to-90/ this guide for leveling up. what frustrate me is that i dont deal enough DPS compare to others. my dps is about 300+ while my friends (warrior) can reach 900+ easily. note that warrior is playing as dps. also, am having some troubles understanding how some abilities work * Frost Nova does not freez mobs simetime eventhough is deals dmg and no sign of immune is there. * ring of frost mobs does not freez eventhough they walk into the ring. * does Ice lance 4x dmg only work on frozen targets or on anyone after i get the charge from freezing a target I know that i should not care about dps until End game but the dps gap is really disappointing can you please advice me on how to improve my dps ? how to get more Ice Lance charges ? and explain how these abilities work correctly

Oltier 471 Report post Posted September 8, 2014 My first question is: Do you think that the leveling guide's instructions are not clear enough? Don't worry to tell me, I'm not going to bite your ears off :P I love feedback and if they are indeed not clear I am going to reformat them. :) The DPS problem in the dungeons (if you are indeed following my guide's instructions) is, that my guide mostly focuses on soloing quests. For example: In an instance, you don't have to keep up Ice Barrier (unless you are getting hit), because that is a DPS loss generally and your tank will hold the aggro anyway (hopefully:D). Another example is the usage of Flamestrike and Cone of Cold.. On single target you should never ever use it. What I would suggest to you is to check out the rotations here (https://www.icy-veins.com/wow/frost-mage-pve-dps-rotation-cooldowns-abilities)%C2'> adapt it to your level. I mean, if you cannot use mage bombs yet, just skip that part. But the priority should most likely be the same. Also, the way how classes gain their most important DPS CDs and abilities highly differs. For example, when I was leveling my shadow priest, I had NO AOE AT ALL until level 80. And I was always the last on the DPS list before that.. Due to no AoE. Meanwhile, DKs with Blood Boil were always 1k DPS higher than me. Frost Nova will usually work only on trash mobs in raids/dungeons. (Or maybe it won't work even on those.) You should only use Frost Nova if you can follow it up with a Cone of Cold, or a Frost Bomb will explode in a second on your frozen targets. Otherwise, just don't use it.Do not use Ring of Frost in dungeons unless you need to CC something (which is really unnecessary in most instances apart from challenge modes). Use Ice lance ONLY with Fingers of Frost charges. Fingers of Frost charges are generated by the number of Frostbolts/Frostfirebolts you cast (FFB should only be casted with Brain Freeze procs). If you pet's Freeze spell can freeze some mobs you will get FoF charges based on the number of enemies that got frozen by the ability (up to 2). Also, Frozen Orb will generate 1 FoF charge guaranteedly, then it has a change to generate more. Over all, I would also suggest you to read the whole topic that I linked above to get to know the core abilities. My leveling guide assumes that you are already familiar with some basics, and as I have mentioned it focuses on solo content.

My leveling guide assumes that you are already familiar with some basics, and as I have mentioned it focuses on solo content. first of all thank you for making the efforts to reply to me and for your huge efforts on leveling guid. the guid if perfectly fine and i understand everything on it. eventhough i am not fully using the guide word by word (for example i have ring of frost) i did play around with the rotation but the basic abilties are the same. since we have a healer i rarely use ice block instead spam frostbolt. about the dps part, i know that DPS matters on late game but as mentioned before its really disappointing to see that huge gap between me and other classes (300 to 600). the reasone that i made this topic was to know if its normal to deal 300+ dps or if am doing something wrong. I think that the problem comes from low gear and not having main dps rotation abilities yet (such as bomb). anyway, I will keep leveling up and after I start getting a better gear I hope that i can see improvements. Akoras 2 Report post Posted September 9, 2014 As berlinia mentioned, heirlooms can make a huge difference dps wise.. But even with equally good gear you have to keep in mind, that the class balance during leveling is horrible sometimes. For one part tanks tend to deal insane damage in dungeons, partly because of the revenge mechanic and partly because they tend to have powerfull aoe very early. If you are just looking at "damag done" or "dps done" the aoe during trash will dominate the meters.. Just relax and try to optimise your rotation, get some practice playing your mage :) Mages deal fair damage when leveling and I am sure you will find yourself on top of the meters at some point during leveling.. Not that that really matters ;) At max level pretty much all classes are balanced (yeah i know some speccs have issues, still) and mages certainly are and always will be a very good dps class cause well, that's all they really are :)
