Staff of Herding / Whimsyshire

Might want to change the recommendations for getting leroics chinbone, since it's easier/just as easy to get it in adventure mode, there's a waypoint just outside the manor.

PS. just got my gibbering gemstone, took way too long!

Is Chiltara a random spawn rather than a guaranteed spawn? I've run that place a few times and not even seen Chiltara

Sorry for the necro, just not sure where else to ask.

She is indeed not a guaranteed spawn. Getting her item to drop was easily the worst part of my quest to acquiring the staff. Good luck!

Make sure to run to the end of the caverns though, as she usually pops up at the very end of the cave.

Ok, thanks for confirming. Is it better to do it in story or adventure? I'm running Adventure at the moment at T1, does difficulty matter? May drop to Normal just to speed farm :)

I don't think it matters for the drop rate, just whatever is easiest for you.

If I remember correctly I did it on Master difficulty in Adventure mode, using the nearest checkpoint.  Caverns of Frost shares a spawn with Icefall Caves, so if you see that one pop up you already know you can restart as well.

It looks like Black Mushroom was removed from the game for some reason? It's no longer listed as an ingredient for Staff on the battle.net page. [Upd: Nevermind, i just checked in game, and it's still needed for the recipe.]

As a side note, i remember farming for that damned Gibbering Gemstone for 7 hours straight until it finally dropped. That was about the most degrading gaming experience in my whole life. Good times!

Also, the rainbow goblin opens portal to that very level, but with actual magical loot involved (the regular Whimsyshire has about the same loot as any other area [aside from small chance for Hamburger], i just went and checked that after the goblin).

I found the staff of herding on non-season. And i found the black mushroom chamber on season, but the mushroom wasn't there. The room was exactly the same. Can i still get the staff in season?

As of November 19, 2017.

I just got all ingredients (including the required Black Mushroom) within a few hours of casual farming. For Caverns of Frost, just load into the game, check the Act 3 Bridge of Korsick. ONLY go if there is NO bounty, OR if the bounty tells you to explore the Caverns of Frost. Otherwise, it is the Icefall Caves. Makes farming much easier. Also, for the liquid rainbow, when you enter the game, check the waypoint and ONLY go if there is a bounty called "Find the Mysterious Chest" or something along those lines. Can't remember exact wording. Following these two steps for the Liquid Rainbow and Gemstone make this much easier.

My one question is, is the Staff of Herding consumed upon entering Whymsishire? Can I just use the staff endlessly? Also, can we get the Cosmic Wings here? I want to bring a friend that is offline but I want to go now haha... Don't want to lose the opportunity to bring him along.

No, you can't get cosmic wings using the staff. You can only get them from the portal goblin. The portrait drops from the Staff portal.

You can keep using the staff.

Nope, staff is not consumed.  Once you have the Staff and can open it up, you can go pretty much anytime you want.

Guest Forumn Newbie

Hi All,

I have been farming the Gibbering Gemstone for months now and in addition killed Chiltara probably pushing on 100/150 times and no drop. keep getting the same loot but no stone. Has the location of where it drops changed? I am loosing all hope here. I am doubting what I am doing.

Character I am using is a Necro and only up to the quest which goes thought the Bridge of Korsick (ie the rest of the story line has not been played). I go to bounty mode on Normal and only search for Caverns of Frost (if not there reload)... Second level and Kill the monster...

Any reassurance that I am doing the right thing would be good!

It still drops.. Took me a few 100 tries to get the drop. Do it on highest possible torment and it double's as lousy DB-farming...

With s12 i gave up farming for this, never got the gibbering and took forever to get other items. This season I must have been extremely lucky, farmed all items incl staff recipie in under 2 hours. Did switch between 2 characters after a few tries.

Guest Gem still drops

So I can confirm that the gem still drops for any who were wondering. Zelusa and Chiltara can both spawn in the same place, or just one or the other. I tried for about 2 hours on TXIII, nothing, then about 2 hours on Normal, which is where it dropped. 0% MF.

about 3 hours to get all the pieces. ported in, and to my surprise! nothing, am i missing something in here? this zone is pretty uneventful. drops sucked. i got in here in Season 16 through Goblin portal, drops were much much better. did Bliz nerf the hell out of this for Season 17?

Although they look alike, Whimsyshire is not the same as Whimsydale. The former is opened with this staff by the Ghost of the cow King, and can spawn Sir William, who drops rainbow portrait, while the latter is opened by the Rainbow Goblin, and can spawn Princess Lillian, who drops Cosmic Wings. It's two separate instance, with the same tileset.

There weren't any notes if they nerfed it, but keep in mind difficulty does have an impact on the drops.

Guest Waste of time...

After farming for the materials for the staff including recipe it was really disappointing when entering. Apart from the achi's it literally dropped nothing, so in my opinion you are better off looking for rainbow goblins than running this. Presents just explode into confetti, mushrooms that would normally drop deaths breaths just pop and the clouds that would normally drop a mix of gold and gems rarely drop anything, pointless ...

Hi I play my dabio 3 on my switch I’m trying to find it. Do you have to be a higher level to get it or lower level

Once you get the portrait frame, absolutely.  Until then, assuming you want it, you keep running it.  Thank goodness the staff isn't consumed.

Just like the goblin version is the only place to get the wings, but that's worse since you have to keep finding another goblin.

FWIW I got the Gibbering Gemstone long before I got the plans.  Izual was being uncooperative.

[ originally posted on us<dot>forums<dot>blizzard<dot>com/en/d3/t/gibbering-gemstone/1258 ]

I have read the horror stories of people trying to get the Gibbering Gemstone. One person claimed 537 attempts and said they were about to go insane.

I wondered if there is some hidden enabler to getting it quicker, so I got all of the other items first including the plans from Izual. I trained the blacksmith with the plans, and put all four of the other items in my inventory.

Also, being lazy, I didn't want to repeat going to the Frost Caverns over and over not to even find Chiltara.

I like the following instructions as an outline, however I searched for a lot of other pages to make the other parts go better. Liquid Rainbow was a one shot using someone else's instructions.

www.eurogamer<dot>net/articles/2018-11-01-diablo-3-ultimate-evil-guide?page=16

I noticed that a lot of people were quoting a 5% drop rate off Chiltara, with most people seeming to not even know how that number was calculated. This got me thinking that if you do it right, then it's not 5% (or much worse).

To paraphrase Pursoe's quote above:

... look at the Bounties for Act III. There are 2 and only 2 Bounties you want to look for:

1. Clear the Caverns of Frost
2. Kill Chiltara

I got #1, and cleared both levels, no Chiltara! Ugh! Then, I clicked the "Fields of Slaughter" portal at the very end to leave a different way on a lark, without resetting by using "Leave Game". And then, surprise, Chiltara seemed to jump out of nowhere, and she dropped the Gibbering Gemstone.

So, maybe Chiltara is always there in the Caverns of Frost, just waiting to give everyone a Gibbering Gemstone. Maybe Chiltara only drops it at the end like that. I would be interested in other folks' experience to see if I actually just got lucky or not.

My hunch is that it is not a very low drop rate. Blizzard wants you to have fun in Whimyshire.

So, try all the tips combined:

1. Get everything else done, putting all the items in your inventory for the attemtps.

2. Only take the "Clear the Caverns of Frost" Bounty in Act III.

3. Clear everything in the cave, taking every item. If Chiltara doesn't appear like with me, go all the way to the end of level 2, and click "The Fields of Slaughter" portal to see if Chiltara was hiding.

Is this a 100% method for the Gibbering Gemstone?

Maybe Chiltara wasn't hiding behind the portal stone. I don't know. It all happened so fast, but looking back it seems to be something fun that Blizzard would do to make it cool (pun intended).

Thanks for sharing your experiences with us! It's fascinating how the hunt for the Staff of Herding has changed over time and with changes in the expansion. For many long-term players the Staff hunt was over back in vanilla, but I can imagine a newer player can be overwhelmed by the amount of old, and sometimes conflicting, information on how to farm one in 2020.

A brand new season arrives in Diablo 3 next month! Blizzard have the full preview ready so let's take a look at the cosmetic rewards, season journey, Haedrig's Gift sets, and more!
      Season 33 (Source)
Sanctuary needs you to answer its call for aid in Season 33: Shades of the Nephalem. Starting on October 25 at 5 p.m. PDT/CET/KST, Nephalem can harness the power of the Shades of the Nephalem theme, which first debuted with Season 22. For an in-depth look at what’s coming, take a gander below. Also, Season 32 will officially come to an end on October 20. Seasonal Journey
      Season Theme
      Season Cosmetic Rewards
      Season Journey Rewards
      Seasonal Conquest
      Haedrig’s Gift
      Patch 2.7.8
      Season Theme
The shadows, they are moving, and they seem… animated. Like they have a will of their own. Whatever this trickery is, perhaps you can use it to your advantage. Let’s see what the demons say when you fight side by side with your own shadow! Shadows of the Past: Activating a Shrine/Pylon will spawn in a shadow clone of your class, who will come with a randomly chosen 1 of 3 predetermined builds. This clone's power will scale with your character and will last for 1 minute (unless your character dies). See this article for the shadow clone variations that can spawn when activating. Kanai’s Cube: Kanai’s Cube will have a fourth slot this season. This fourth slot will have the choices of the first 3 slots but will not stack with any of them, providing additional flexibility to your build. Return to Top Season Cosmetic Rewards
Beginning with Season 17, we began re-introducing previous Seasonal rewards to make them available to any who may have missed them the first time around. For Season 33, this means awards originally available from Season 9 are returning to the Season Journey. However, we know it’s nice to have something new to aim for if you’ve already participated in previous Seasons. We’re continuing to provide new End of Journey rewards as introduced in Season 17, with two new cosmetic rewards for those who complete the entirety of the Season journey. Prove your worth in the Trial of Tempests to earn the Stupendous Contraption pet and the Industrial Portrait Frame.
In addition to the Chest and Gloves slots of the exclusive Conqueror Set, you’ll be able to earn the Pandemonium portraits, and the cute and craggily Rocky pet first introduced in Season 9. Return to Top Season Journey Rewards
If you’ve been diligently slaying demons before and reached Conqueror in the Season Journey each time, you’ve surely accrued a few extra stash tabs. You’ll earn one additional tab each Season by finishing the Conqueror tier, up to a maximum of five: Guardian of Sanctuary: Finish a Level 70 Nephalem Rift on Torment XIII difficulty within five minutes. Gem of My Life: Level three Legendary Gems to level 55. All I Do is Win: Complete 2 Conquests this Season. Life Goes On: Kill Maghda at Level 70 in under fifteen seconds on Torment XIII difficulty. Money Ain’t a Thang: Slay Greed on Torment XIII difficulty. Treasure Goblins outside of Nephalem Rifts will sometimes open portals to Greed’s domain, The Vault. Take U There: Reach Greater Rift Level 60 Solo. Greater Rift keystones can be obtained from any Nephalem Rift guardian. Power Amplification: Use Kanai’s Cube to augment an Ancient Legendary item with a Level 50+ gem. Cubic Reconfiguration: Use Kanai’s Cube to reforge a Legendary item. Return to Top Seasonal Conquest
Want to prepare your Conquest plan for Season 33? Here are the challenges you’ll face: For Curses!/Stars Align, pick any Cursed Chest event that requires killing monsters and defeat over 350 or more at level 70 on Torment X or higher. Also returning for Season 33 is Sprinter/Speed Racer, where you’re challenged to complete the entire Diablo III campaign from Act I to Act V at Level 70 in under an hour! Next is Avarice/Avaritia, where all that glitters is gold—that is, if you can complete a 50 million Gold streak outside of The Vault or its Inner Sanctum. We're also bringing Thrill/Superhuman, which requires completion of a Greater Rift Level 45—solo and without any Set items equipped. And lastly we'll be bringing back Speed Demon/Need for Speed, meaning you'll need to beat a Torment X Nephalem Rift at Level 70 in 2 minutes. Best of luck! Return to Top Haedrig’s Gift
Finally, the Class Sets rewarded for completing certain chapters in the Season Journey courtesy of Haedrig’s Gift have rotated once more. We’ve listed the available Sets below. For those new to Seasons, here’s how it works: Completing Acts II, III, and IV of the Season Journey will reward you with three of Haedrig’s Gifts. Each Gift contains a few pieces from one of your Class Sets. Players can only unlock one Class Set in this manner per Season across Hardcore and Non-Hardcore, so choose wisely! The set you receive depends on the class of the character you’re playing when you open each Haedrig’s Gift. To collect a full Class Set, you’ll need to open all three on the same character. Here are the sets granted by Haedrig’s Gift in Season 33: Barbarian - Might of the Earth Crusader - Thorns of the Invoker Demon Hunter - The Shadow's Mantle Monk - Monkey King's Garb Witch Doctor - Raiment of the Jade Harvester Wizard - Firebird's Finery Necromancer - Grace of Inarius Return to Top Patch 2.7.8
Our next patch goes live on October 22 and introduces quality-of-life updates for demon slayers on Mac. New Mac Executables/Mac Native Silicon and Intel: These updates will allow Diablo III to run on new versions of the macOS. PC Experience Stability: This PTR is open to both Mac and PC players. While the focal point of the 2.7.8 PTR is to test technical updates for Mac, we want PC users to monitor their playing experience as well. If you experience any stability issues or difficulties in connecting with Mac players, please give us that feedback. Return to Top

Season 32 of Diablo 3, Ethereal Memory, will go live later today, and we have prepared a list of various useful and updated guides to help you get started!
The Season of Ethereal Memory will start later today at 5 p.m. PDT (NA Servers), 5 p.m. CEST (EU Servers), and 5 p.m. KST (Asian Servers). The theme of Season 32 was first introduced with Season 24 and is now back for another round!
      What are Ethereal Memories?
The theme of the season reintroduces the Ethereals, which are rare and powerful items known from Diablo II and reimagined for Diablo III. You will be able to hunt for all 21 iconic weapons of Diablo 2 during the season, but this time they will be harder to find and will only drop in Ancient or Primal rarity!

To help you with the start of this new season, our team has been busy updating all of our Diablo 3 guides to reflect all the changes ahead of the season launch. You can find our Season 32 Hub, as well as guides for leveling, the season mechanic, rankings, season start guides for each class, and even conquest guides, in the list below.
General Season Guides Our Season 32 guides include all the information you need to know, from Haedrig's Gift sets to SSF and season mechanic explanations:
Seasonal Leveling Guide Season 32 Compendium Ethereal Memories Solo Self-Found Mode (SSF) Leveling Guides
We have you covered with our updated leveling guidelines, regardless of the class you want to play!
Barbarian Season Start Crusader Season Start DH Season Start Monk Season Start Necromancer Season Start Witch Doctor Season Start Wizard Season Start Season 32 Conquest Guides
Finally, if you need help completing any of the season's conquests, we recommend you check out our individual guides listed below:
Curses! Divinity  Years of War Masters of the Universe Boss Mode Season 32 Cosmetic Rewards
Previous season items make their return this season. If you missed out on rewards originally available in Season 8, you will be able to get them this time. Furthermore, the end of journey rewards (originally introduced in Season 17) are back: The Teganze Warrior portrait frame and the Bat pet!

As an interesting side note, the portrait frame you can earn this season is named after Teganze, a zone that was first introduced in Diablo 2 and will be revisited during our journey in the upcoming expansion of Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred!

Season 32 in Diablo 3 starts on July 12 and here is the official preview with more details.
      (Source)
Sanctuary needs you to answer its call for aid in Season 32: Ethereal Memory. Starting on July 12 at 5 p.m. PDT/CET/KST, Nephalem can harness the power of the Ethereal Memory theme, which first debuted with Season 24. For an in-depth look at what’s coming, take a gander below.

      Seasonal Journey
      Season Theme
      Season Cosmetic Rewards
      Season Journey Rewards
      Seasonal Conquest
      Haedrig’s Gift
      Season Theme
As the Nephalem reflect on Sanctuary's history, instruments of power from a bygone era resurface. These ethereal memories will grant those persistent enough to search for them unimaginable power. Legends of the past will manifest once more in the present, and you must decide how to best use these gifts—for ethereal power is fugacious by nature, and will soon return to being no more than a myth.
For this seasonal theme, we were inspired to reimagine how Ethereal items could manifest in Diablo III, with 21 iconic weapons making a return from Diablo II. In Season 32, Ethereals are rare, powerful, and fleeting items.
Season 32 reintroduces Ethereals, a weapon-type that players will be able to acquire and hunt for in their upcoming seasonal journey. Ethereals will roll a powerful set of affixes, a random Class Weapon Legendary Power and a random Class Passive Power. Ethereals will have unique icons, names, item types, and sounds originally found in Diablo II. For additional details on Ethereals, check out the list below:
Ethereals are account bound and can only be dropped by monsters, chests, and destructibles, but do not require your character to be Level 70 in order to drop. Ethereals cannot be acquired through Kanai's Cube or from Kadala. Ethereal rarity drop rate is set between Ancient and Primal items. There are 3 unique Ethereals per class. Each Ethereal has fixed affixes and rolls one random Legendary Weapon power and one random Class Passive Skill. Only one Ethereal can be equipped at a time. Ethereals ignore item durability loss. Legendary Powers and Class Passive Skills rolled on Ethereals do not stack with the same power equipped through Kanai's Cube, Items or Skills. Ethereals cannot be Enchanted, Transmogrified, Dyed, Reforged, or traded. Ethereals can be augmented. Collecting all 21 Ethereals during the season will reward players with the Feat of Strength, Ethereal Recollection. Players who accomplish this will have all Ethereal transmogrify options available for future seasonal and non-seasonal play. Beginning with Season 17, we began re-introducing previous Seasonal rewards to make them available to players who may have missed them the first time around. For Season 32, this means awards originally available from Season 8 are returning to the Season Journey.

However, we know it’s nice to have something new to aim for if you’ve participated in previous Seasons. We’re continuing to provide new End of Journey rewards as introduced in Season 17, with two new cosmetic rewards for those who complete the entirety of the Season journey. Feast your eyes upon the Teganze Warrior Portrait Frame and Bat pet!

In addition to the Boots and Pants slots of the exclusive Conqueror Set, you’ll be able to earn a series of portrait frames that smolder with demonic fires of the Burning Hells. The iconic wings of Andariel will also be available once more, allowing you to truly embrace your inner Maiden of Anguish.

      Haedrig’s Gift
Finally, the Class Sets rewarded for completing certain chapters in the Season Journey (courtesy of Haedrig’s Gift) have rotated once more. We’ve listed the available Sets below. For those new to Seasons, here’s how it works:
Completing Chapters 2, 3, and 4 of the Season Journey will reward you with three of Haedrig’s Gifts.
Here are the sets granted by Haedrig’s Gift in Season 32:
Barbarian – Immortal King’s Call Crusader – Seeker of the Light Demon Hunter – Natalya’s Vengeance Monk – Uliana’s Stratagem Necromancer – Trag’Oul’s Avatar Witch Doctor – Spirit of Arachyr Wizard – Vyr’s Amazing Arcana
