Glyph of outbreak for 2h Frost

I was wondering if there is any viability in using the glyph of outbreak and plauge leech on a 2h frost dk in a similar manner to blood dk's, but subbing out death strike for obliterate.

 

since the glyphed outbreak and frost strike's runic power costs are fairly similar and frost stike hits as hard as a wiffle ball bat as opposed to obliterate's sledgehammer, I figured that the trade off was much more valuble in a dps sense, especially once you factor in rime procs and  a possible reduced chance of wasting killing machine procs on frost strike.

 

not to mention that since WoD, blood tap was changed to include any runic power expenditure to generate blood charges instead of just frost strike.

 

this would also remove the need for plauge strike since blood plauge could be refreshed with outbreak, allowing for possibly even more obliterates (though not very many, if any.)

 

the biggest downside that i can see is more intensive management of blood tap, though this is fair insubstancial compared to it's possible benifits.

 

Bearing in mind I am not a theorycrafter (my professions are smithing and mining #buyersremorse) Is there merit to this playstyle or did i miss something that keeps this from being viable.

Occasionally giving up a frost strike for oubreak so you can plague leech should definitely be a dps gain since you'd be getting an obliterate at the expense of 1.5 frost strikes. I hadn't even considered that glyphed outbreak can still build blood tap charges. and that will allow you to use all of your runes on nothing but obliterates. sounds like a win/win/win.

Yeah, that does sound like a pretty win/win situation.

But Storm, with WoD pre-patch they changed ALL the rune regen talents to be based on just spending runic power. Doesn't matter what that runic power is spent on. So, glyphed outbreak creates blood tap charges :D

Think you are onto something here. I am not a fan of the new slow frost but this does sound like a nice little dps increase.

Just taking a cursory look at some logs, my average OB hits for ~34k and average FS for ~16k. HB+PS hit for ~11k combined.

 

By using gOB instead of HB+PS, you gain the damage of OB-(HB+PS) which for me then works out to 22k damage. You lose whatever 30RP is worth, which we can call 30/25*FS = 1.2*FS = 19.2k.  So the net is about a 3-4k damage increase, give or take.

 

3-4k damage once every 30s would be a tiny dps gain + some convenience...except by NOT glyphing outbreak you get a free disease refresh once per minute.  With glyphed outbreak, you lose this, and thus once per minute lose 30RP worth of damage, which again we are calling 19.2k.

 

So if you refresh diseases twice per minute, you gain at best 4k damage for the disease that outbreak would have been down for, but lose 19k on the refresh that otherwise would have been taken care of by free unglyphed outbreak.  This is on balance a small DPS loss.  If you refresh diseases closer to 3 times a minute due to PL, its still a small DPS loss but quite tiny (lose ~8k dps every minute for ~133dps loss).

 

On the upshot, managing KM is a bit less of a headache this way, and using PL efficiently is also easier.  So while refreshing diseases with glyphed outbreak is a small DPS loss in theory, the added convenience and efficiency likely outweighs the 100-300DPS loss on paper.

 

Using outbreak instead of FS as an RP dump is pants-on-head retarded and I think working that out is best left as an exercise for the reader rather than making this post any longer.
