Addressing Unholy DK's DPS Issues

Seems like a lot of people don't realize this so i made an account just to post this.

 

Defile is part of your dps rotation for both SINGLE Target AND AoE. Defile does so much damage and people fail to realize it. If you know the boss isn't going to move for a while. Dropping a Defile on it will yield so much damage for you. Defile is pretty much on CD all the time for me. The opener I use for bosses is pretty much:

 

Army of the Dead (10 secs before pull if you can. So it gives time for your Runes Regen)

Outbreak

Gargoyle

Defile (If you know that the boss isn't going to move. If the boss is moving delay defile.)

Festering Strike x 2

Scourge Strike

Defile (If your tank is moving the boss to a better location.)

 

After that follow basic rotation with the added defile and your dps will be amazing.

 

Also a friendly reminder Soul Reaper now does its damage at 45% instead of 35% and it is probably one of your hardest hitting abilities.

Why would you use Defile when Necrotic Plague gives you so much more both total and consistent dmg?

Very crudely put, dots aren't that strong now. With snap shot gone Unholy Dk's diseases aren't what they used to be. Necrotic plague at 15 stacks does the same DPS as your two diseases, the differences is it ticks 1 second faster. This comes after a ramp up time though. Defile hits like a freight train on a short cd and fits perfectly in your rotation. So it comes down to do you want your weak diseases to tick more often or do you want a very powerful attack? DPS wise there is no comparison between defile and necrotic plague, you would even be better with sindragosas breath over necrotic. Plus if necrotic falls off due to encounters its another huge loss to get it back up to 15 stacks. 

 

I loved festerblight play more than anyone but, it is gone now. The power of unholy comes from soul reaper, gargoyle, and festering strike hitting multiple times (and of course defile :D) 

 

So, tldr, dots are weak now, and defile is a dps freight train. Play what makes you happy but for optimal dps you need to take defile.

Based on the sims, Unholy is one of the top DPS at current gear levels and will remain in the top 5 throughout the expansion. It doesn't feel amazing when leveling because it lacks burst until you get Defile at 100, which completely changes everything.
