Hi,

First, thanks for the deck! One quick question though: Why not Lord of the Arena in place of Boulderfist Ogre? Are the two additional health points really preferable to Taunt?

Thanks!

Yes, by a long, long way.

Taunt is the most overvalued trait by new players. And it is in no way worth sacrificing Health. If anything you want your Taunt minions to have higher health than the alternative minions you could play, or at least the same. Strong Taunt minions are things like Sen'jin, Twilight Guardian, Sludge Belcher, Ancient of War etc. because of their huge health pools. A 6/5 Taunt is just removed too easily.

Will this guide be updated to include the new League of Explorers expansion?

Swap Huge Toads and Raptor, Torches and Razorfen Hunters.

Thanks a lot for this deck, I hope it helps to get above level 18 (my limit right now). Just one question, I'm a big fan of Sorcerer's Apprentice... Do you think it could go as an improvement in this deck, maybe insted of the the Kobold Geomancer or a Shattered Sun Cleric ???

She is a direct upgrade from Bloodfen Raptor. However, as I am not a fan of Razorfen, I would personally swap her for Razorfen instead. But in the end, it doesn't even matter.

First of all, thank you very, very much Sottle for all of your basic decks and guides! Not only that your basic card selections help win the matches, but your explanations and card replacements helped me learn more about the game mechanics and "thought process" overall.

That being said, I have noticed that in most cases there are replacements for minions. I have played for a while now and have some new cards in my Collection, so I was wondering if there is any use or (mid-)improvements with cards like Mana Wyrm, Flamecannon, Forgotten Torch, Flame Lance...?

I know these are Basic Deck guides so there is no room for cards that are not in that category, but I was wondering where would I be able to find some guides that would help me improve my (mage) deck with in-between cards, i.e. helping choose which minions or cards to drop in order to put secrets that you mention (I have Ice Barrier) or new spells like Flame Lance.

Thank you again for your effort, it's very much appreciated!

Cheers!

this deck completely relies on drawing flamestrike, its so draw dependant its unreal. draw well you win, draw bad you lose. how are you supposed to counter your opponent in a deck you claim is for board control when you have nothing that can actually gain control of the board?? your over-matched by just about every other deck out their if your draw is not perfect. it completely lacks any taunt and omits what to me seems like a very very strong low character that puts two free taunt minions on the board early that with this deck you struggle to get rid off...why??

seriously....this deck relies on only 2 things....flamestrike (if you dont get it you lose) and Luck of the draw (if you dont get  flamestrike...you lose)

People...i think this is a troll deck...designed to make noobs like me suck even harder and quit the game...i really question the ethics of this website, im not sure these so called professionals have any idea what they are talking about.  how is it fun to always lose unless you get lucky

I was rather successful with the deck on NA server 3 months ago (got rank 15), with some changes made. +Gnomish Inventor, +Sen'jin Shieldmasta, +Stormwind Champion, -2 Razorfen Hunter, -Archmage. Also, with some classic, TGT or WoG cards, the deck's power grows pretty fast. C'Thun could be a good addition, together with his buff cards.

well i have tried. how i have tried to enjoy this game. i thank you icy veins for such an in depth website and and excellent guides and so forth. But unfortunately i am not the person to enjoy a game that is laced with luck and where skill has so little impact on the game.  i am not naive enough to believe for a moment that any of the games i win are my own skill. i spend 1 game relaxed and happy and 9 games raging becasue there is nothing i can do to win.

i thought arena would be the fix for this so tried it using my free pass. yeah.......what a disaster. i assumed everyone had the same draw of cards therefore the skill is picking the right ones to use in your deck. Nope. i get nothing better than blue and i come up against opponents drawing purple and oranges with aplomb. why in heavens name do people pay money into a game where you are not in control...i just dont get it

i applaud you for having the patience of a saint to stick with this game but i just cannot understand the mentality of losing when it isnt your fault or winning becasue the luck was with you. it just seems madness to play a game where you have no influence on the outcome of the game.  games should be about skill, the best player wins ... this is just not that kind of game. i dont even see how you can enjoy it just messing around for fun

Is there an updated version of this deck?  It mentions Karazhan in the Card Swap section - not Un'Goro or Frozen Throne.  Am currently using this Basic Deck as well as the others on this site (just started Hearthstone yesterday), so would like to know what might be good swaps as I have gotten free Frozen Throne as well as Classic Packs.  Thank you.

KoFT doesn't have good mage cards for swapping into basic set, I mean, the best card is the DK, which can't really be a part of the deck. If you have the card and some other elementals, such as Tar CreeperFire Plume Phoenix and even Pyros, then you can add it in. Some candidates are 1 copy of Flamestrike, 1 copy of Acidic Swamp Ooze and maybe Archmage.

For Un'goro, I already listed some of the cards above, cheapest options are elementals which you can add to the deck, and make it like a tempo mage. Primordial Glyph is almost always a good addition for any kind of mage deck, there are a bunch of class elementals, and of course Arcanologist if you add any secrets to the deck.

Feel free to post a decklist here, with possible additions in your mind, then we can, and we will, help you.

Thanks for providing these basic decks, this is very useful for beginner players like me. The Card Choices and Card Omissions sections are particularly valuable in my opinion, as they educate us beyond the scope of the deck itself.

One little frustration I have as a new player is that the Card Swaps section doesn't apply to me. I started playing since The Boomsday Project, so I don't have any cards from One Night in Karazhan. I have a dozen from The Witchwood, from some quests, and I start stacking up cards from The Boomsday Project now. Are there any cards from these two expansions that would make good swaps for the basic Mage deck?

Looking at my own limited collection, I tried swapping 1 x Knife Juggler for 1 x Bloodfen Raptor, and 1 x Blackwald Pixie for 1 x Razorfen Hunter. It seems to work but I wonder what more experienced players would think of that. I was considering Astral Rift too but the random outcome makes me a bit nervous.

Hmm, Levelled my mage up to level 13, but don't seem to have access to some of these cards. E.g. frostbolt?

Hearthstone is taking a bold step into the StarCraft universe with "Heroes of StarCraft: The Great Dark Beyond," a 49-card mini-set launching in January 2025.
Featuring iconic factions like Zerg, Protoss, and Terran, complete with legendary leaders Sarah Kerrigan, Artanis, Jim Raynor, this set blends StarCraft nostalgia with Hearthstone's gameplay.
Additionally, Arena Mode is getting a massive overhaul, introducing shorter Normal Arena runs and a high-stakes Underground Arena with a game matching "re-draft on loss" mechanic, giving you the option to re-draft cards, edit your deck, and keep your run alive, after you lose.
The year ahead promises 3 expansions, including the Emerald Dream's battle between Old Gods and Druids, a return to Un'Goro Crater, and a Chromie-led journey through alternate realities.

Hearthstone: Heroes of StarCraft – The Great Dark Beyond Mini-Set
Early next year, Hearthstone is going beyond Warcraft and into... Heroes of StarCraft! This special Mini-Set will have a whopping 49 new cards across three themed factions, which show what the StarCraft universe would look like in the Hearthstone Tavern. Each faction is made up of cards that can be used across multiple classes, including an iconic Hero card.
       Zerg
Death Knight, Demon Hunter, Hunter, and Warlock have joined the Zerg! Led by the formidable  Sarah Kerrigan, they will have aggressive cards that win the game by swarming the board.
       Protoss
Druid, Mage, Priest, and Rogue fight for the Protoss Empire. Led by the High Templar Artanis, they will have powerful, high-cost cards that are made cheaper throughout the game.
       Terran
Paladin, Shaman, and Warrior make up the Terran forces, led by the one and only Jim Raynor. They will command Battlecruisers—a special take on the Starship mechanic from The Great Dark Beyond.
The Mini-Set will feature a slew of StarCraft units which are sure to invoke nostalgia, as well as the Terran-armored Murloc, Grunty, and new, thematic music. You can chart a course for the Heroes of StarCraft Mini-Set, launching in January 2025! More announcements, details, and card reveals are coming closer to launch.
       Major Arena Updates
Then, for the first time in 10 years, Arena Mode is getting a major overhaul. With that update, there will be two kinds of Arena to choose from. Normal Arena will be shorter form, allowing you to complete your runs more quickly. Competitive Arena players will be able to play in the higher-stakes Underground Arena, with longer runs and a new feature: Re-Draft on Loss. Re-Draft on Loss means that, after you lose, you’ll have the option to re-draft cards, edit your deck, and keep your run alive.
Ratings will also be added to both Normal and Underground Arena. Normal, skill-based matchmaking will be used for Normal Arena. Underground Arena throws caution to the wind and lets you face off against opponents of all skill levels.
This major Arena revamp is coming in the first half of next year. Look out for more details about this update closer to when it goes live.
A Preview of the Year Ahead: The Year of the Raptor!
On top of those updates, Hearthstone has an exciting year of expansions ahead, with much-requested themes, locations, and familiar faces across Azeroth.
In the first expansion of the year, enter the Emerald Dream and join the battle between the Old Gods and the Druids of the Emerald Dream for the fate of the World Tree. Things will heat up even more when the Druids of the Flame light up the Mini-Set (releasing earlier than normal this year, during the 32.2 Patch).
The second expansion of the year will be Hearthstone’s first-ever sequel: the return to Un’Goro Crater! Join Elise on a hunt for a mythical, lost Tortollan city. When you find it, join the Tortollans in a festival to celebrate the mighty dinosaurs of the crater in the 33.4 Mini-Set.
In the third expansion of the year, travel with Chromie through alternate realities to recruit Legendary Warcraft heroes like you’ve never seen them before. Leading to the 34.4 Mini-Set: an epic showdown against Murozond at the end of time!

Does anyone know of these changes make them relevant ?
Should frost mage play with these or one of these now ?
