Challenge Modes - What Spec(s)?

Recommended Posts

I am looking to begin striving for Gold Challenge Mode times with a group of guildies. We need a Warlock, so I leveled my Lock recently. Now I need to know if I should be using Destruction, Affliction, and/or Demonology. If I should be using more than one, in what cases?

I reasoned that it's likley I should be playing Destro for most of the dungeons, due to single target capabilities, and Fire and Brimstone for mass pulls. I was thinking I might see a dps increase if I went Affliction for any council bosses we encounter. Is this a correct analysis of when the specs will be at their peak?

A mix of Destruction and Demonology is what I'm going for, but I've only had time to do 4 CMs properly.

In Shadowmoon Destruction with GoServ and Servitude provided the necessary Single Target to beat all the bosses that dungeon has. For Grimrail, Docks and Everbloom I favoured Demonology for the mass pulls, but kept my ST Destruction spec for certain encounters.

That sounds interesting to me. I have never played Demonology properly, and due to the guides on this site seeming to be mainly for raiding, and sometimes lacking with dungeon content. Would you find the guides here sufficient to learn what I would need to perform great AoE damage during the required sections, or are there other things I would need to look into and learn to play Demo in this situation near peak?

I would just stick with Destruction in this situation. You can run two Destro specs, one with Cataclysm + GoSac for AoE, another with Supremacy/Service + Servitude for Single Target.

You need to stay within your comfort zone. Often people will switch specs because someone told them it was better, and whilst that might be true, their lack of experience and understanding causes them to fall flat on their face.

Stick with Destruction for CM's, and if you want to learn Demonology, read the guides, watch a ton of videos, and go spam LFR to get a feel for the rotation and different talent combinations. It's not a spec you can learn overnight but (Demonbolt aside) it's quite a rewarding and fun spec, in my opinion.

Demonology can do some impressive AOE if you learn the nuances of the spec. There's a lot more than just spamming Hellfire and Immolation Aura. Chaos Wave is great for snaring large groups, and does a good bit of damage on its own. Your felguard/wrathguard's Command Demon spell is also very powerful when timed well on a tightly packed group.

There's another aspect to consider as well: mobility. Sure, you can grab Burning Rush as any spec, but what other spec gives you a gtfo button on such a short cooldown?

Steel is right though. If you're comfy with Destruction, stick with it. If you're feeling adventurous, I'd bet that Demonology could serve you quite well if played right.

Did all golds easily with destro GoSac/Cata, I can't really imagine Demo being a better CM spec in most situations so I'd just keep with destro and not specswitch along the way.

It depends on your set up. We did Shadowmoon and had Boomkin / WW Monk / Destro Lock. We actually lacked Single Target damage on the bosses (it's a very boss heavy dungeon), so I went GoServ + Servitude and it did the trick.

It's been a while now but am I crazy thinking I remember spec swapping mid CM in WoD? As in changing from primary to secondary spec or vice versa while changing talents/glyphs is still locked.

I usually sim my characters to get the best possible results. I enjoy the process quite a lot and since I reached 120, I wanted to find out the best build of the spec. (Note, I didn't want to find out what to play, but rather how my own build fares in comarison.) I rarely mind a 1-2% difference. If it goes above 2%, I really mind a change. What this thread is about is mainly to bring something in the attention of those who help making the class guides, especially the talent choices. To my surprise, I was awed to find out that certain talents outperform previous "Standard" choices in the endgame, probably due to the stat squish.

The Frost go-to build (top dps) would probably be along the lines of <Icy Talons / Cold Heart - Runic Attenuation - Frozen Pulse - Gathering Storm - Breath of Sindragosa>. What I found out primarily was that after the removal of legendaries, Cold Heart severely underperforms at most given situations resulting in a major dps drop due to the low mastery. Gathering Storm also suffers from the same problem and most of the times, Frostwyrm's Fury is better overall. The biggest surprise of them all, however, was that Inexorable Assault overperforms quite a lot, and is the first reason why I made the topic. I then started simming with the above in mind and I came across a build that some would not consider on par with top dog builds around the meta, which is the use of Horn of Winter which overperforms both its other two options when using the Breath build. Talent Sim can be seen here. Another intresting thing, which I loved, was that the 2nd best build uses Obliteration as a lvl 100 talent and no other build surpassed it (Other than the first one, obviously). So, I encourage frost players out there to give their other, less common talents a try. To the class guide author(s), I believe that the two "underdog" talents will earn their spot in the class guides.

Thank you for your time reading this.

Hey so as the title suggests I'm looking for a bit of information on the state of the specs for tomb as I have been asked to reroll to fill in some of the empty ranged spaces we have now found ourselves with in our mythic team and I'm curious as to which is going to be the overall "stronger" spec I know that is completely subjective
but a general guide line as I am presently working on my frost weapon but I feel as though I should be working mainly on my arcane one due to changes that are coming but both of the specs are being "buffed" and fire seems to be trailing behind still
I was just hoping someone with more experience as mage could run me through this so I can better decide for myself what I am going to do :)

      Hi,

Heading into Nighthold for the first time tonight and now sure how to spec.
      ST?
      AOE?
MoC or Volley? Is Stampede worth taking?

      Help please.

Wondering what's the best spec to level up as 1-100.  I'm gonna be playing Demo in the end, but I was thinking Destro is best for leveling.  Any help appreciated.  First post by the way, so hello all; love the guides.

So right after I hit 100 and while I was still doing some quests as destro, the spec I leveled as, I got my first legendary. Sweet right? One right off the bat! But it's made me wonder, as demo has proven to be the top performing spec, if that's turned out to be a drawback. Mostly because this Magistrike Restraints is the one I got. It has a very spec specific benefit, and I'm wondering if it's worth sticking to destro because of it. I've played some demo, and I worry that if I get a second legendary in demo, it's going to spread out the power I could gain by having two for the same spec. Also I wonder if that 30% chance of the extra chaos bolt is going to increase my damage enough to be competitive with demo at my ilevel (855 right now). Or I could always get one in demo that benefits all specs. But I don't know. So I'm mostly just working with what I have now and under the impression that I will, at some point get, one more.

So tell me what you think. Is that 30% chaos bolt worth sticking with the spec? Is the possibility of having two destro legendaries really going to push my damage output higher than demo would be with no legendaries for it? Or just one?
