Pings Guide

A comprehensive guide for Pings usage and understanding in Heroes of the Storm, to communicate efficiently with teammates without using chat.

1.

Introduction

Pings are a way to communicate with teammates without using chat. They can be used to coordinate team actions and warn about threats. By effectively communicating through pings, you can keep typing to a minimum and increase your chance to win.

2.

Quick Ping

  • Press [Alt + Left Mouse Button] on interactive targets.
2.1.

Capture Camp

  • Malfurion wants to capture Siege Camp

You can use a Quick Ping on a Mercenary Camp to point out that it is time to start clearing it, so that your teammates do not forget to do it. Ping earlier if you do not want them to be late. This way you will also help players who are not familiar with Mercenary Camp timings at understanding when to do them.

2.2.

Get Objective

  • E.T.C. wants to collect Tribute

You can use a Quick Ping on a Map Objective to ask your teammates to collect/capture it because you are ready to zone for them or you are busy doing something else. Heroes that are good at zoning should ideally not be channeling Objectives.

2.3.

Push Structure

  • Sylvanas wants to push Tower

You can use a Quick Ping on a Structure to tell your teammates to target it or that you ideally want to destroy it before retreating. This is particularly useful when going for a Tower and both Towers near a Gate are up, or when an allied Hero gets thrown behind the enemy Gate and you need quickly to destroy a side Wall to get them out.

2.4.

Kill Hero

  • Anub'arak wants to kill Whitemane

You can use a Quick Ping on an enemy Hero in-vision to tell your teammates to kill them. This is a way to communicate that it is important to kill that Hero first or that you want to focus damage on that Hero to secure a kill, avoiding to damage multiple Heroes and killing none.

2.5.

Kill Mercenary

  • Uther wants to kill Boss

You can use a Quick Ping on an enemy Mercenary in lane to tell your teammates to kill them. This is a way to communicate that it is important to kill that Mercenary as soon as possible, before nearby Structures take too much damage or get completely destroyed. This is mostly useful for Bosses, but can also be used for other Mercenaries.

2.6.

Need Help

  • Ana needs help!

You can use a Quick Ping on yourself to tell your teammates to help you. This is particularly useful when you are being dove while playing a Hero with no (or almost none) peeling tools and low survivability (for example Ana).

2.7.

Healing Fountain

  • Diablo needs to drink from Healing Fountain

You can use a Quick Ping on a Healing Fountain to tell your teammates that you need to drink from it. This way they will know that you cannot help them for a few moments. This is better than pinging your Health Bar or Resource Bar (as explained in the corresponding sections) because sometimes you may want to pre-tap (using your Healing Fountain right before a fight when almost full Health and Mana).

3.

Danger Ping

  • Press [Alt + Left Mouse Button], move your mouse cursor upwards, and then release.

Danger Ping
3.1.

Dangerous Area

  • Tyrande warns this area is dangerous!

You can use a Danger Ping to tell your teammates that a given area is dangerous because there are enemy Heroes hiding nearby or because an enemy Hero put something harmful there (for example Steel Trap Icon Steel Trap by Junkrat).

3.2.

Stealth Hero

  • Garrosh warns this area is dangerous!

You can use a Danger Ping to signal that you spotted an enemy Hero in Stealth near that location. Considering that Stealth prevents Heroes to be seen on the Minimap, it is quite useful to use pings for them.

3.3.

Dangerous Hero

  • Varian warns that Garrosh is dangerous!

You can use a Danger Ping on an enemy Hero to let your teammates know they are a threat and they should be respecting them. This is useful when facing Heroes with powerful Abilities who can easily get a kill (for example Stitches with Gorge Icon Gorge).

3.4.

Bad Positioning

  • Uther warns Jaina is in danger!

You can use a Danger Ping on an allied Hero to let them know they are standing in a dangerous spot, a choke point, or where your team lacks vision. This way they will hopefully notice their mistake and move to a safer position before it is too late.

3.5.

Enemy Nearby

  • Varian warns this area is dangerous!

You can use a Danger Ping where you think enemy Heroes could engage, flank, invade a Mercenary Camp, or gank. This is meant to raise awareness, to make your teammates faster at responding to threats.

3.6.

Invade Risk

  • Valla warns this area is dangerous!

You can use a Danger Ping on a Mercenary Camp to communicate that you believe the enemy team is on it and your team needs to make a play based on that: take down Structures nearby or, if they are on a Boss Camp on a Map with 2 of them, capture the other one.

3.7.

Hearthstone

  • Sgt. Hammer warns this area is dangerous!

Right after returning to the Hall of Storms with your Hearthstone, you can use a Danger Ping on yourself or around you to communicate that you are far away from the action and they need to wait for you.

4.

On My Way Ping

  • Press [Alt + Left Mouse Button], move your mouse cursor to the right, and then release.
On My Way Ping
4.1.

Join Soon

  • Anduin is on the way!

You can use a On My Way Ping to communicate that you will soon be in a given location to fight, gank, defend Structures, contest Objective, heal allied Heroes, or provide support in any way. This way your teammates could wait for you before making a play or start baiting enemies right before you get there.

4.2.

Capture Camp

  • Greymane is on their way to Bruiser Camp!

You can use a On My Way Ping to communicate that you are leaving your current location to go capture a Mercenary Camp. This way your team will be warned that you are abandoning them for a bit and they will realize they have to play safe until you come back.

4.3.

Engage Soon

  • Hanzo is on the way!

You can use a On My Way Ping right before engaging (for example Hanzo using Dragon's Arrow Icon Dragon's Arrow), so that your teammates can go in at the same time and not be late. You can also do this during a team fight to communicate that you intend to continue the battle, that you want to chase enemy Heroes.

5.

Assist Ping

  • Press [Alt + Left Mouse Button], move your mouse cursor downwards, and then release.
Assist Ping
5.1.

Mercenary Camp

  • Hanzo asks for assistance!

You can use an Assist Ping when you or someone else needs help for capturing a Mercenary Camp as the only Hero who is currently on that job is not enough. When this ping is used this way, you generally want the Healer to join.

5.2.

Get Objective

  • Cassia wants assistance capturing this Seed!

You can use an Assist Ping when you need help to capture/collect an Objective. This way you can tell your team that you cannot do it alone because there are Heroes and/or Monsters nearby.

5.3.

Cover Lane

  • Tyrande asks for assistance!

You can use an Assist Ping when a lane is empty and someone should be there to soak. This way your teammates will notice that someone should go there in order for your team to not lose precious Experience, especially in the early game.

5.4.

Reinforcements

  • Murky asks for assistance!

You can use an Assist Ping when a lane is not empty but you need reinforcements due to an unfavorable matchup, due to being outnumbered, or because you cannot win the nearby Capture Point. The help you need could be in various forms: healing, waveclear, or ganking.

5.5.

Regeneration Globe

  • Kael'thas asks for assistance!

You can use an Assist Ping on enemy Minions to signal that you need help to collect the Regeneration Globe. While some Heroes need them more than others, they are useful for all Heroes, not just for who has a Quest requiring them. This way a Hero with more mobility or survivability than you can pick it up for you.

Regeneration Globes are needed for getting progress on the following Quests:

The following Talents benefit from Regeneration Globes as well:

Due to Aspect of Death Icon Aspect of Death, Regeneration Globes are also the only way for allied Heroes to heal Deathwing. 4 Regeneration Globes are almost equivalent to a Healing Fountain.

5.6.

Group Up

  • Auriel asks for assistance!

You can use an Assist Ping near you to tell your teammates to group up in a given spot. This is particularly useful when playing a Healer with area of effect healing (for example Auriel).

6.

Defend Ping

  • Press [Alt + Left Mouse Button], move your mouse cursor to the left, and then release.
Defend Ping
6.1.

Defend Town

  • Mephisto wants to defend this Fort!

You can use a Defend ping on allied Structure to tell your teammates that more Heroes are needed there to defend it from enemy Minions, Mercenaries, or Heroes. Try to use it as early as possible, otherwise your teammates will not be there in time.

6.2.

Defend Objective

  • Probius wants to secure the area!

You can use a Defend ping nearby an Objective to communicate that you would like your team to position in a way that does not let the enemy team get progress on the Objective or to zone them away while someone is capturing it.

6.3.

Mercenary Camp

  • Junkrat wants to defend!

You can use a Defend ping nearby a Mercenary Camp to communicate that you would like your team to position in a way that does not let the enemy team invade it or to zone them away while someone is capturing it.

7.

Retreat Ping

  • Press the [V] key.
7.1.

Fall Back

  • Johanna calls for retreat!

You can use a Retreat Ping whenever you feel like it is not the moment to fight for any of the following reasons: numerical disadvantage, lack of resources (low Health and/or Mana), Heroic Abilities on cooldowns, lost Objective, Talent Tier disadvantage, or useless brawl giving free Quest progress to enemy Heroes (such as Zul'jin). When retreating, avoid splitting by not walking on different sides of impassable terrain.

7.2.

Give Objective

  • Chromie calls for retreat!

You can use a Retreat Ping when you want to give the Objective to the enemy team because, due to a lack of resources or any other form of disadvantage, your team can no longer win it. If you do not die, at least you will be able to slow down their push with the Objective's reward they won.

7.3.

Abandon Town

  • Nova calls for retreat!

You can use a Retreat Ping when you want to abandon a Fort or Keep because, due to a lack of resources or any other form of disadvantage, it can no longer be defended. Dying for a Fort or Keep that is going to be destroyed anyways will only make things worse.

7.4.

Leave Lane

  • Dehaka calls for retreat!

You can use a Retreat Ping in a lane when you feel like an allied Hero should not be there, because you are already there and you are fine dealing with Minions or Mercenaries alone. This way your teammates can realize they can go get value elsewhere.

7.5.

Leave Minions

  • Kerrigan calls for retreat!

You can use a Retreat Ping nearby enemy Minions to communicate that you wish your teammates to not kill them because you have a Quest that requires last-hitting them. If you kill Minions too quickly, you will slow down their Quest farming, delaying their powerspike.

The following Quests requires last-hitting Minions:

8.

Ability Ping

  • Press [Alt + Left Mouse Button] on Abilities in the HUD at the bottom of your screen.
Ability Ping
8.1.

Cooldown

  • Alexstrasza can use Dragonqueen in 35 seconds!

You can use an Ability Ping to announce that a given Ability will be ready in x seconds. This is useful to coordinate engage and follow-up, to say that your global is on cooldown, or to tell your teammates that a key Ability is not available yet.

Here is a list of key Abilities that are important to announce when not ready:

At high level of play you may also want to announce the following key Abilities:

  • Uther is ready to use Divine Shield!

You can also use an Ability Ping to announce that a given Ability is ready. This may be useful right before using an Heroic Ability or right after picking an Heroic Ability that requires your team to be aware of it (for example Sanctification Icon Sanctification on Tyrael).

  • Anduin has 2 charges of Leap of Faith!

When using an Ability Ping on an Ability with charges the game will not only tell if it is ready but also the amount of charges currently available. This way you can tell your teammates how many times you could cast an important Ability in during next fight.

  • Maiev is not able to use Naisha's Memento yet!

When using an Ability Ping on an Ability that requires a condition to be met in order to be usable, the game will simply show it is not usable. This may be useful for telling your teammates that you cannot do Mercenary Camps without it (for example Naisha's Memento Icon Naisha's Memento on Maiev).

8.2.

Low Mana

  • Uther does not have enough Mana for Holy Light!

You can use an Ability Ping when not having enough Mana to cast a given Ability to communicate that to your team. This way your teammates will be warned that, despite being alive, you can no longer contribute to the fight.

8.3.

Heroic Ability

  • Anduin is ready to use Lightbomb!

You can use an Ability Ping right after choosing your Heroic Ability to tell your teammates which one you picked. This may be useful when you pick an Heroic Ability that requires your team to be aware of it (for example Sanctification Icon Sanctification on Tyrael).

9.

Hero Ping

  • Press [Alt + Left Mouse Button] on Heroes in the HUD at the top of your screen.
9.1.

Missing Hero

  • Li Li warns that Genji is missing!

You can use a Hero Ping on a missing enemy Hero to tell your teammates to be careful. This is best used when enemy Heroes are rotating from a lane to another or looking for a gank.

9.2.

Dead Hero

  • Nova warns that Muradin will respawn in 9 seconds!

You can use a Hero Ping on an enemy Hero to share their respawn time in chat. If their respawn time is high, it means you want to push the advantage; if their respawn time is low, it means you have to be careful because they will respawn soon.

  • Auriel warns that Valla will respawn in 22 seconds!

You can use a Hero Ping on an allied Hero to share their respawn time in chat. Regardless of their respawn time, it means you want to play safe until they come back, otherwise you will be outnumbered and you will only risk staggering deaths.

10.

Talent Tier Ping

  • Press [Alt + Left Mouse Button] on Team Levels in the HUD at the top of your screen.
10.1.

Play Aggressively

  • Arthas notes that your team has a Talent Tier advantage.

When your team has a Talent Tier advantage or is close to getting it, you can use a Talent Tier Ping to communicate that you would like to get value from it, by fighting and/or taking down enemy Structures. Note that the enemy team will likely try to avoid fighting.

10.2.

Play Defensively

  • Varian notes that the enemy team has a Talent Tier advantage.

When the enemy team has a Talent Tier advantage or is close to getting it, you can use a Talent Tier Ping to communicate that you should soak Experience from Minions and avoid fighting because it will be extremely unlikely to beat them. Note that the enemy team will likely try to force a fight or gank someone.

10.3.

Raise Awareness

  • Varian notes that both teams are on the same Talent Tier.

When neither team has a Talent Tier advantage, you can use a Talent Tier Ping to tell your teammates to pay attention to Team Levels. If your team is behind in Experience, it means you want to fight before the enemy team gets a Talent Tier advantage. If your team is ahead in Experience or someone in your team needs an important Talent Tier (for example Varian before Level 4), it means you want to wait for the next Talent Tier to be unlocked.

11.

Health Ping

  • Press [Alt + Left Mouse Button] on your Health Bar in the HUD at the bottom-left corner of your screen.
Health Bar Ping
11.1.

Low Health

  • Tyrael has 12% Health!

You can use a Mana Ping to communicate that your Health is low. This way your teammates will be warned that, despite being alive, you can no longer contribute to the fight.

12.

Resource Ping

  • Press [Alt + Left Mouse Button] on your Resource Bar in the HUD at the bottom-left corner of your screen.
Resource Bar Ping
12.1.

Low Resource

  • Lt. Morales has 2% Energy!

You can use a Resource Ping when playing a Hero with a Resource to communicate that your Mana, Energy, Fury, Rage, or Scrap is low. This way your teammates will be warned that, despite being alive, you cannot contribute to the fight for a while. This is particularly useful if you are the Healer of your team.
