Ajarakan Combat Guide

Ajarakan is a powerful and aggressive fanged wyvern, and Water or Ice elemental weapons are the best choice for maximizing damage output. He is equally susceptible to Poison, Sleep, Paralysis, Blast, and Stun, meaning any status ailment can be effectively used against him. Flash Pods, Shock Traps, and Pitfall Traps are viable options, but Sonic Bombs are completely useless, so there is no reason to bring them into this fight.

Ajarakan’s most notable and annoying attack is his shoulder slam charge, where he slams his body down and drags himself forward along the ground. This is his most infamous move, and he uses it frequently, so it is crucial to learn how to counter, guard, dodge, or offset it effectively. He also has a forward slam charge, where he slams one of his arms into the ground before dragging himself forward at high speed.

One of Ajarakan’s unique mechanics is his ability to interact with environmental objects such as pipes. In areas like Oilwell Basin (Area 6), he will jump onto pipes and swing aggressively, before launching himself at the hunter in an aerial slam. The best counterplay to this is to move as far away as possible, avoiding any unnecessary risk.

When bored or enraged, Ajarakan will dig out boulders from the ground and hurl them at the hunter. He always throws two consecutive boulders, and while they aren’t difficult to dodge, they explode on impact, adding an extra layer of danger. A smart strategy is to run toward him while he is throwing boulders, as this provides a brief window to attack his face freely.

His tail is also a threat, and if you remain behind him for too long, he may attempt a tail thrust to knock you away. Long Sword users can easily counter this move, but other weapons should either dodge, guard, or offset accordingly. He also has a tail slam, where he lifts his tail up before smashing it into the ground. This is telegraphed well, making it an easy attack to counter or avoid. Targeting his tail aggressively will shorten its reach, so severing it early is highly recommended.

Another dangerous move is his left-hand grab attack, which he may attempt if you stand too close to his body. If he becomes irritated, he may slam both arms down simultaneously, requiring a counter, guard, or quick dodge. His 360-degree spin attack is another problematic move, as it can be difficult to predict, but proper positioning and reaction time will help mitigate the risk.

Ajarakan only has two wound points: his head and his back (near the base of his tail). Since neither of these are particularly difficult to reach, it does not matter which wound is popped first. However, prioritizing the head will ensure consistent damage output throughout the fight.

7.

Enraged State

When Ajarakan enrages, he becomes engulfed in flames and creates a fire pit beneath him. He then taps his own back with his tail twice before letting out a powerful roar. This roar must either be guarded against or countered to avoid being left vulnerable.

One of his most devastating new attacks during this state is his molten fire wave, where he slams his entire body into the ground, sending out waves of molten lava in a straight line. Getting hit by this attack inflicts Fireblight, which must be removed by rolling at least three times.

Another enraged move involves him rapidly charging forward, dragging his arm through the ground in an attempt to wipe hunters off the battlefield. He may repeat this move twice in succession, so be prepared to guard, dodge, or counter accordingly. One of his more dangerous attacks is his massive molten explosion, where he stands still, repeatedly taps his head with his tail, then plunges his fiery arms into the ground to release a devastating blast forward. This is easy to dodge, and the best counterplay is to immediately move behind him and attack his tail while he is locked into the attack animation.

8.

Conclusion

Ajarakan is a fun but highly aggressive fight that can keep even veteran hunters on their toes. While he may seem frustrating at first, learning his attack patterns will significantly improve survivability and damage efficiency. Bringing an elemental weapon (preferably Water or Ice) is highly recommended, especially for Tempered Ajarakan, who has increased health and damage output. If you struggle with the fight, consider using environmental hazards, traps, and Flash Pods for additional control. Explosive Kegs are also a great option for extra burst damage.

Perhaps the biggest challenge in this fight is his shoulder tackle move, which can quickly become frustrating. Patience is key—learning when to guard, counter, or dodge this attack will make the encounter significantly easier. Most of his other attacks are well-telegraphed and avoidable, and staying calm under pressure will be the deciding factor in your success. With enough practice, Ajarakan will be reduced to nothing more than another fallen brute wyvern, joining the ranks of Blangonga, Congalala, and (hopefully) Rajang—if Capcom is smart enough to include him in G-Rank.
