Blangonga Combat Guide
Let’s go over Blangonga’s strengths, weaknesses, attack patterns, and the best strategies for fighting him. If you are looking to maximize your damage output and achieve the fastest kill times, it is recommended to bring a Fire or Thunder elemental weapon. Blangonga is equally vulnerable to all status ailments, including Poison, Sleep, Paralysis, Blast, and Stun, so you have plenty of options when it comes to afflicting him. Utility items such as Flash Pods, Shock Traps, and Pitfall Traps are effective against him, allowing you to immobilize or stagger him for free damage. However, Sonic Bombs are completely useless and have no effect on him.
Blangonga is best described as a melee brawler, combining raw physical strength with ice breath attacks and boulder throws. One of his simplest attacks to watch out for is his body slam, where he raises his entire body before crashing down onto the ground. This move is well-telegraphed, making it easy to block, dodge, or even offset, so simply reacting to it in time should keep you safe.
From time to time, Blangonga may dig up a medium-sized boulder from underground and toss it forward. Attempting to block or offset the boulder is not recommended, as it is simply not worth the risk. Instead, the best course of action is to dodge to the side to completely avoid it. Another attack in his arsenal involves pulling himself back before lunging forward a few feet and punching with one of his arms. This move can be easily blocked, countered, or offset if your timing is precise. If you are standing in front of him, he may also attempt to maul you with his right arm. The best way to handle this attack is to either block it or quickly dodge out of the way.
Occasionally, Blangonga will breathe ice from his mouth while sweeping his head sideways. If you remain inside the ice breath for too long, you will become frozen and stuck on the ground, leaving you vulnerable to devastating follow-up attacks. To avoid this, do not stand in front of him when he performs this attack. If you fail to escape in time, your best option is to block the incoming damage if your weapon allows it. There is also a variation of this move where he stands on his hind legs and breathes ice straight forward when landing back down.
Blangonga also has a classic move from older games, where he rapidly leaps forward to dive at his target. This attack can be difficult to offset due to how sudden it is, so the best reaction is to either dodge or block rather than attempting to counter it. Additionally, be cautious when positioning yourself behind him, as he may suddenly perform a backward leap while simultaneously kicking you with his feet. This is another classic move from previous Monster Hunter titles, and while it can be offset with perfect timing, it is generally safer to dodge or block.
Another important detail to remember is that Blangonga is always accompanied by a pack of Blangos. These smaller minions can easily interrupt your combos, knock you down at the worst moments, or even breathe ice on you, so it is highly recommended to eliminate them first before fully committing to the fight against Blangonga.
One of his most devastating attacks is a rampaging body slam, where he goes into a frenzied state and leaps onto his target multiple times, almost as if trying to squish the hunter like a chew toy. This move deals massive damage and can instantly kill you if you are already low on health or even at half HP. When you see him begin this aggressive rampage, your best option is to run as far away as possible to avoid taking fatal damage.
If you successfully mount Blangonga, you can only create two wounds—one on his back and the other on his head. It is recommended to pop the back wound first, as it is harder to reach when dismounted compared to his head. Last but not least, Blangonga has a Power Clash mechanic, meaning that if you guard frequently, you will eventually trigger one. Use this mechanic to your advantage if you are playing a shield-based weapon such as Lance, Gunlance, Great Sword or Sword & Shield.
By following these strategies, you should be able to handle Blangonga effectively. Keep your positioning in mind, eliminate his pack members early, and avoid his ice breath attacks to stay in control of the fight. And with that, you now have everything you need to hunt and slay Blangonga.
Enraged State
Just like with most monsters, when Blangonga is enraged it usually just is more aggressive and attacks at a more faster pace. If you are not careful it can easily combo you into death. So just always be on a lookout and stay vigilant. There are no new attacks or anything like that, best is to keep your distance and only take risks when you are 100% positive you can get some damage without getting yourself in danger.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Blangonga offers a well-balanced fight. However, compared to monsters like Congalala or Gypceros, he has a much larger moveset, meaning there are more attack patterns to learn and memorize, which can make the fight slightly more challenging. If you find yourself struggling, make use of traps, Flash Pods, and environmental hazards to turn the fight in your favor. As always, these same strategies can be effectively applied when facing a Tempered Blangonga, so stay prepared and adapt accordingly.
