Gravios Introduction

Gravios Art in Monster Hunter Wilds

Gravios is a returning monster from the first generation of Monster Hunter. He was introduced in Monster Hunter in 2004 for the PS2. He is a flying wyvern that looks like a giant armored rock that believe it or not has the ability to fly despite his look. He normally resides in volcanic areas with lots of lava around. He is the adult form of Basarios, but Basarios is not a part of Monster Hunter Wilds. Gravios likes to breath a giant fire out of his mouth in a form of a laser towards his prey and also cause explosives if someone is beneath him. He is a large monster that also moves quite slow. He is native the Oilwell Basin and is only available in high-rank.

Gravios Combat Guide

Gravios is a formidable monster that demands careful strategy and patience. If you want to maximize your damage output and achieve the fastest possible kill time, it is highly recommended to bring a Water, Ice, or Dragon elemental weapon, as these elements are his primary weaknesses. Gravios is equally susceptible to all status ailments, including Poison, Sleep, Paralysis, Blast, and Stun, allowing for a variety of strategic approaches. Utility items such as Flash Pods, Shock Traps, and Pitfall Traps are all effective against him, but Sonic Bombs have no effect and should be avoided.

Gravios has several devastating attacks, some of which can catch you off guard. Throughout the hunt, you will spend most of your time positioned under his belly, as his primary gimmick revolves around breaking his chest armor as quickly as possible. Once his armor is shattered, his weak spot is fully exposed, allowing for massive damage opportunities. However, he possesses several powerful attacks designed to prevent you from attacking freely, making the battle challenging if you are not prepared.

One of his most dangerous attacks occurs when he flies a few feet into the air before slamming down with his entire body weight. This move can be difficult to predict, as you must adjust your camera upward to anticipate when he will drop down. If you are using a Long Sword, learning to counter this attack is highly recommended, but if you are not confident in your timing, you should either guard or simply run away as soon as you notice him taking off.

Occasionally, Gravios will also release sleeping gas, which can put your hunter to sleep if you are not quick enough to escape. If you get caught in this attack, you will most likely be punished with a follow-up attack. Additionally, he has another area-of-effect ability, where he releases an explosive blast directly underneath himself. As soon as you hear an audio cue or see visual particle effects, start moving away from under him immediately to avoid taking massive damage.

His most iconic attack is his giant fire laser, which he fires straight ahead as his long-range attack option. You should never be standing in front of him when this attack happens, as it deals extreme damage and can inflict Fireblight. If you are hit and afflicted with Fireblight, rolling three times in a row will remove the debuff. This attack provides a great opportunity to either attack his head (if you need crafting materials) or focus on his belly for free damage while he is locked in the animation.

Gravios also possesses a more dangerous laser attack, where he fires downward beneath himself, creating an area-of-effect explosion. If you are anywhere near his head, this attack will hit you regardless, making it imperative to reposition quickly. Another variation of his laser blast involves firing the beam forward and then dragging it back towards himself, setting everything ablaze between his head and whatever is in front of him. This attack can be devastating if you don’t move quickly, so stay alert.

Gravios’s tail is massive, and it can actually be carved twice due to its size. However, severing it is significantly more challenging. If you happen to encounter a particularly large Gravios, reaching his tail can be difficult, and its durability makes it even tougher to cut off. The best time to attack his tail is when he is performing his laser attacks, as his tail remains stationary. Alternatively, if you manage to knock him down, prioritizing tail damage during that opening can be highly effective.

Gravios’s tail attacks include a side-to-side whip, as well as a downward slam. These moves are easily telegraphed, and positioning yourself carefully will prevent unnecessary damage. Repeating the process of targeting his tail during openings will eventually allow you to sever it.

From time to time, Gravios may also charge forward—one of his classic attacks from the original Monster Hunter games. This move is slow and well-telegraphed, making it one of the easiest attacks to dodge, offset, guard, or counter. Another peculiar move in his arsenal is his rolling attack, where he drops to the ground and rolls towards the hunter in an attempt to crush them. Like his charge attack, this move is fairly easy to see coming and should not pose much of a challenge if you are paying attention.

When mounting Gravios, you can create up to three wounds—on his head, back, and tail. Since dealing damage to his tail is often a challenge, it is highly recommended to pop a wound there when mounted to make tail damage more effective while dismounted.

Enraged State

When Gravios enters his enraged state, he will let out a roar, and his mouth will be engulfed in flames. This signals increased aggression, and he will start using his fire laser attacks more frequently while attacking at a faster pace. If you are unsure whether he is enraged, simply look for a red symbol next to his monster icon or check whether flames are visible in his mouth. Other than increased aggression, there are no drastic changes in his moveset, meaning you only need to remain more cautious and react faster.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Gravios is not an overly difficult fight for experienced hunters, but newcomers may find him challenging if they are unfamiliar with his attack patterns. His most frustrating moves are his sleeping gas and the explosive fire attack beneath him, as both can disrupt your flow and force you to reposition, making it harder to break his chest armor quickly. These stall tactics can be annoying, as they delay your damage output and allow Gravios to reset the fight in his favor.

To maximize efficiency, bringing an elemental weapon is highly recommended. Gravios has a massive health pool, and if your weapon isn’t properly optimized, the fight will take significantly longer than necessary. His tail also requires a prolonged effort to sever, so be persistent if you need the materials.

Using environmental hazards is a great strategy to get free damage, whether you are targeting his belly or tail. If you are using a Hammer, breaking his head and chest will be much easier. If you are using a different weapon, be aware that attacks aimed at his head may bounce due to his natural armor, potentially making the fight drag on longer if you aren’t focusing on the right weak spots.

If you are attempting to break his head for crafting materials, keep in mind that non-Blunt weapons may experience attack deflections, which will slow down the fight. You can still break it, but it will take longer, so be mindful of whether the extra effort is worth the trade-off. To speed up the hunt, consider utilizing traps when necessary. Pitfall and Shock Traps can help immobilize him, and large explosive kegs are an excellent way to deal significant burst damage when properly timed.

By following these strategies, rinsing and repeating your attack rotations, and taking advantage of his predictable attack patterns, Gravios will eventually be broken apart and fall before you know it. These tactics also apply to his Tempered version, where the same approach remains effective with minor adjustments for his increased health and aggression.n
