Great Sword mechanics
Charged attacks
In Monster Hunter Wilds, the Great Sword can perform charged attacks that deal increased damage. These attacks have three charge levels, with damage increasing at each stage. However, overcharging the attack will reduce its effectiveness. Using focus mode mid-charge will help to ensure that you don't miss your attack.
- Charged Slash - Hold ; ;
- Strong Charged Slash (After Charged Slash) - Hold ; ;
- True Charged Slash - Final part dealing the critical damage
Guarding
Guard is a mechanic that uses up stamina in order to give you reduced damage. The amount of reduced damage and the amount of stamina used depends on the attack strength. Ultimately this also depends on the weapon as different weapons can withstand different amounts of damage. See below:
- Weak Attack - Deals no DMG | Uses 10 Stamina
- Mid range Attack - Deals 10% DMG | Uses 25 Stamina
- Weak Attack - Deals %20 DMG | Uses 40 Stamina
Perfect Guard
A Perfect Guard offers enhanced defense and allows for follow up attacks. Consecutive guards build up the Clash Meter, eventually triggering a Clash. This will begin an animation where you must rapidly press a button to generate knockback, creating an opportunity for a follow up effect.

Additional rules to consider
To successfully guard, you must be close to the incoming attack. When using the Great Sword, Charge Blade, Heavy Bowgun, or Sword and Shield, the attack must also fall within a 140° angle. Additionally, some attacks cannot be blocked unless the Guard Up skill is equipped.
Offset Attack
The Great Sword also features an offset attack, a defensive technique that involves striking the monster just before it attacks. This is activated when a certain weapon lands a hit on a specific monsters attack, gradually filling a meter. Once the meter reaches a certain threshold after multiple successful offset attacks, the monster experiences knockback. Additionally, the Great Sword has a unique follow-up move after executing a successful offset attack.
Tackle
The Standard Tackle interrupts the Great Sword charging process and grants super armor, preventing knockback from effects such as roars. The Enhanced Tackle, introduced into Monster Hunter Wilds, improves upon this by preserving the charge level when defending from an attack, easing into a True Charged Slash. The Tackle is a vital technique allowing the Hunter to withstand monster attacks while maintaining their charge level.
Focus mode
Focus Mode is a new feature in Monster Hunter Wilds that allows your hunter to align with the camera's direction. This is especially beneficial for the Great Sword, as it can be used during the Charge Slash Attack to improve accuracy. Additionally, Focus Mode helps you spot weak points and wounds on the monster more easily. The Great Sword has a Focus Slash - Perforate primarily effective when attacking a monsters wound/ weak point. This will enable the hunter to land a sequence of attacks as well as a finisher attack.

Mounted attacks
By repeatedly landing aerial attacks and dealing high damage, you'll be able to mount the monster and keep attacking. However, the monster will fight back, so you'll need to either prevent yourself from falling or shift to another body part to maintain your grip. While mounted, using knife attacks can create wounds. Depending on your weapon, you can also unleash a finishing move that forces the monster to the ground.
