Guardian Ebony Odogaron Introduction

Guardian Ebony Odogaron is an old returning monster but with a brand new twist in Monster Hunter Wilds. Guardians are a new species, however, this particular specie is already based on an old returning monster known as Ebony Odogaron from Monster Hunter World: Iceborne. Guardians are actually constructs and not alive beings, so this is a construct of Ebony Odogaron. There is not much information yet on what the main differences are with this monster. Guardians reside in the Ruins of Wyveria locale.

Guardian Ebony Odogaron Combat Guide

Let’s take a look at Ebony Odogaron’s strengths, weaknesses, and how to deal with his various attacks during your hunt. If you’re aiming for the fastest kill time or just want to deal optimal damage, bring a water elemental weapon. He’s most vulnerable to paralysis but can also be affected by poison, sleep, blast, and stun. All utility items work well against him—including flash pods, shock traps, and pitfall traps—except for sonic bombs, which have no effect.

The best way to describe Guardian Ebony Odogaron’s fighting style is that of a furious, hyper-aggressive dog that’s constantly lunging, clawing, and whipping around with its tail. While he might seem intimidating at first glance, the truth is, the fight is very manageable once you get the hang of his movements.

His most frequent move is a double foreleg swipe. He’ll strike with one claw, then follow up shortly with the other. It’s an easy move to read and can be countered, guarded, dodged, or offset without much effort. Sometimes, he’ll also lunge forward with a bite while twisting slightly to the side. He also has a more straightforward version of this attack where he simply lunges forward to snap at you.

If you’re up close, Odogaron might spin his body around to knock you away. This spinning attack isn’t anything to stress over—just block, dodge, or counter it as needed. He often follows this spin with the aforementioned lunging bite. Another move to look out for is when he raises his body and slams his front legs down, triggering a ground explosion. You’ll know this is coming when his forelegs begin to glow white. This is your cue to get ready—block it, counter it, offset it, or dodge. There’s also a variation where he slams both arms down but instead follows up with a wide double-arm swipe instead of an explosion.

He also has a tail-based explosion attack. He’ll leap a few feet into the air and follow through with a tail whip that explodes on impact. Watch for the white glow to signal it’s coming. If you’re behind him, he might just tail whip you in a regular left-to-right sweep. Either way, it’s easy to manage with good timing.

One of his core mechanics is the bleed status. His razor-sharp claws can inflict it after a few hits, causing your health to drain while you’re moving. The only way to stop it is to crouch and stay still for a few seconds. That can be tricky while he’s aggressively coming after you, so it’s sometimes worth hopping on your Seikret and retreating to a safe area before crouching down to clear the bleed.

You can mount him and open up to three wound points: the head, the back, and the base of the tail. It really doesn’t matter which one you pop first, as he’s not a huge monster and all of them are fairly easy to access. That said, if you’re aiming to sever his tail, it’s a smart idea to pop the tail wound while mounted, since he moves around a lot and getting clear access to his rear can be tricky.

Enraged State

When he enters his enraged state, he speeds up dramatically and starts chaining multiple attacks together. His aggression ramps up and he begins to incorporate more explosions into his moveset. Just think of a rabid dog going berserk. You’ll know he’s enraged when his mouth begins glowing with a bright orange hue.

Conclusion

All in all, Guardian Ebony Odogaron isn’t too tough to deal with. If anything, the fight can feel a bit underwhelming, especially once you’ve learned his fairly limited moveset. For a 5-star monster, he isn’t supposed to be particularly difficult, which makes sense since he’s first encountered during low-rank quests. His high-rank and tempered versions don’t deviate much either, so the same strategy carries over.

If you’re having trouble for any reason, make use of the environment and bring along traps and explosives to speed things up. Pitfall and shock traps are great tools here, and explosive kegs can quickly chunk down his health. Keep attacking and staying sharp, and soon enough, this angry mutt will be taking a very permanent nap.
