To skip straight to the endgame builds, click the button below!

1.

Gunlance HR 9-35 Armor Set

This next set lasts from as soon as you hit High Rank all the way until around Hunter Rank 35 and requires you to defeat Quematrice for the weapon, and Ajarakan and Guardian Ebony Odogaron a few times to gain all the materials.

At this point in the game, decorations are not worth specifically farming so simply use what you have to either improve your current skills, add new ones or increase your defensiveness if you feel you are struggling with some of the earlier High Rank fights. That being said, if you are struggling that should go away over time, progressing through this part of High Rank unlocks passive resource farms allowing you to more regularly use consumables without having to actively farm them.

If you can manage to get some Artillery Decorations for your weapon, it will greatly increase your damage!

Gear Decorations
Weapon Quematrice Culebrina III Artillery Jewel II
Artillery Jewel I
Head G. Ebony Helm β N/A
Chest G. Ebony Mail β N/A
Gloves G. Ebony Braces α N/A
Waist G. Ebony Coil β N/A
Legs Ajarakan Greaves β N/A
Talisman Chainblade Charm I N/A

This set mainly uses the Guardian Ebony set due to the powerful Burst skill which is one of the best to use on Gunbreaker. The beta set is specifically used because the additional skills provided by the alpha set do not bring much of value offensively, outside of the alpha braces which give you a Level 2 Burst. This allows you to reach a Level 5 Burst directly. Decoration slot are usually more useful.

The Chainblade charm will give you one level of Flayer which allows you to inflict wounds easier. You can switch it for a more defensive talisman if you feel the need to, or any other you may just have laying around.

You will want to aim for Artillery decorations directly on your weapon as this gives you a massive damage boost: Artillery buffs the explosive attacks of your Shells and Wyvern's Fire.

HR 9-35 Armor Set Skills and Set Bonuses

  • Burst - Level 5
  • Artillery - Level 3
  • Partbreaker - Level 2
  • Guard - Level 2
  • Earplugs - Level 1
  • Divine Blessing - Level 1
  • Ebony Odogaron's Power - Level 4
  • Guardian's Protection - Level 3
  • Flayer - Level 1
2.

Gunlance HR 35-41+ Armor Set

After rank 35 and 40, you will be able to hunt both Gore Magala and Arkveld. These 2 monsters are the main guys at endgame currently until future title updates and their gear is generally some of the best available. However, for this Gunlance build we will not necessarily be using those, as Gunlance takes better advantage of the Burst skill, even still at this point in the game, and we will keep focusing on it.

You will mostly keep your Ebony pieces, replacing just the Legs.

While this set is still a progression set, this set allows you to more than comfortably farm decorations and any materials you may want while you work towards a true endgame set or even just to farm so you can play with builds and options yourself.

Gear Decorations
Weapon G. Veldian Hasta II Artillery Jewel II
Artillery Jewel I
Head G. Ebony Helm β N/A
Chest G. Ebony Mail β N/A
Gloves G. Ebony Braces β N/A
Waist G. Ebony Coil β N/A
Legs G. Arkveld Greaves β N/A
Talisman Chain Charm I N/A

At this point you are able to fully craft any weapon on the weapon tree. As soon as you are able to craft the G. Veldian Hasta II you will want to switch to it. It is a great weapon that will grant you Slightly Strong Wide Shells. From this point on you will want to focus on the Wide Shelling, as it is the most efficient type of Shells for Gunlance. Wide shells deal the highest amount of DPS, boosting your overall shelling and also your Wyvern Fire.

This set still uses the Guardian Ebony 4-piece set, with some slight modifications:

  • Switch the G.Ebony Alpha Braces for Beta Braces, giving you two more Decoration slots. This will remove one Burst point, so you will have to use a Chain Charm in order to keep the Level 5 Burst skill!
  • Switch the Ajarakan Greaves for G. Arkveld Greaves Beta, granting you a valuable point in Weakness Exploit and Elemental Absorption.

Keeping the 4-piece G.Ebony will maximize your Burst power, which can be triggered very often by Gunlancers.

2.1.

Talisman and Key Decoration Options

You want to keep your two Artillery Decorations on this weapon as well, for always more shelling and Wyvern Fire power!

You need to use the Chain Charm I if you want to reach Burst Level 5.

  • Artillery - Level 3
  • Elemental Absorption - Level 1
  • Weakness Exploit - Level 1

  • Earplugs - Level 1
  • Divine Blessing - Level 1
  • Ebony Odogaron's Power - Level 4
  • Guardian's Protection - Level 3
3.

Endgame

Listed below you will find our currently recommended endgame build options for the Gunlance including their best weapons and best decorations to use on these builds.

3.1.

Endgame Artian Gunlance

The Artian Gunlance is currently not the best Gunlance in Monster Hunter Wilds. While this weapon comes with high damage as well as 3x Level 3 Slots with the ability to include an elemental status type. Gunlance remains one of the only weapons that does not use the Artian Gunlance as BiS weapon. You can use it if you want, but the G. Lawful Bors is much more powerful with its Wide Slightly Strong Shelling type and power, and extremely high Attack stat.

3.2.

What is the Best Artian Gunlance?

Currently the best Artian Weapon for Gunlance is the Argenesis with there being a few good variations depending on Production and Reinforcement Bonuses. The Production bonus determines the element type as well as any additional stats such as Attack and Affinity. The Reinforcement Bonus is randomised when upgrading the Artian Weapon using reinforcement materials. You can quit to the title screen without saving in order to reroll the reinforcement bonus if you aren't satisfied with your outcome.

When picking Elemental Type you will want to look at either Sleep due to its x2 damage during Wake up hits or Paralysis when battling during co-op to increase the overall amount of damage dealt.

When looking at the Production Bonus for the Argenesis we will want to Aim for only Attack. Since the Artian weapon has less base Attack than the G. Lawful Bors, you want to max out the Attack bonus on the Artian weapon, as you need as much attack as possible to maximize your shelling damage.

For optimal Reinforcement Bonuses, prioritise Attack and Sharpness. Additionally, focus on Affinity as well.

4.

Gunlance Endgame Armor Sets

With TU1, this opens up the options for Gunlance to go for a more self-survivable build, while also remaining powerful. With Zoh Shia and Mizutsune being much more challenging than previous monsters, if you need more survivability, you will want to use the new gear sets. Of course, the previous one still works perfectly fine. The variant is just a more defensive one, while remaining very powerful to get you through any hunt.

Gunlance Endgame Build Options

Maximized Burst Agitator Gunlance Burst Agitator Super Recovery Gunlance
5.1.

Maximized Burst Agitator Gunlance

This Gunlance Build focuses on maximizing both burst and Agitator in order to get the most damage out of it as possible, while combining those to powerful wide shells and maxed out Wyvern's Fire.

Gear Decorations
Weapon G.Lawful Bors Artillery Jewel III
Magazine/Ironwall Jewel III
Guardian Jewel I
Head G. Ebony Helm β Destroyer Jewel II
Chest Blango Mail β Earplug Jewel II
Gloves Dahaad Shardbraces β Chain Jewel III
Waist G. Ebony Coil β Destroyer Jewel II
Protection Jewel I
Legs G. Dahaad Shardgreaves β Destroyer II
Talisman Chain Charm II N/A

The G.Lawfull Bors is the Best in Slot weapon for Gunlance for the time being. It grants you Wide shells, which as mentioned before, are the highest DPS shells, and Slightly Strong power, which the highest they can be. This weapon also grants you a ton of Attack and 3 Decoration slots, among which 2 are level 3 decorations.

For the weapon decoration you will need a Level 3 Artillery in order to max out your shell and Wyvern's Fire damage. Magazine Level 3 is the second decoration you absolutely need! This one will give you the Load Shells skill, which will greatly improve your reloading and your shell capacity, increasing your power further. Magazine also comes with a second skill: Ironwall is a great choice as it gives you a point in Guard, maxing out your guard skill. The level one Decoration slot on your weapon can be filled with various options: the Guardian jewel is one of them, as it grants one level of Offensive Guard, which is always a great option for Gunlance. You can also switch it for another Magazine jewel, or a Focus Jewel for faster Wyvern Fire charging.

This Build allows you to power through any Endgame content with maxed out powerful Shelling attacks and Wyvern's Fire! The remaining 2-piece Ebony Beta sets allow you to keep the Burst skill that the Gunlance takes advantage off. The Jin Dahaad Set gives you agitator and a level 3 decoration slot. The Blanco Mail will push your Agitator to level max!

You will need the Chain Charm level 2 in order to get your Burst skill to level 5, or a chain Jewel in the level 3 slot of the Gloves. The Decorations on the gear are rather flexible, but we recommend at least one level into Earplugs, which is important for Gunlance, as well as some protection with Divine Blessing.

  • Agitator - Level 5
  • Artillery - Level 3

5.2.

Burst Agitator Super Recovery Gunlance

This Gunlance Build sacrifice a bit of the fire power for more survivability with Zoh Shia's Super Recovery ability. The build is made to get you through any hunt comfortably, without you having to struggle too much. Whether it is for surviving or dealing damage, you will be covered!

Gear Decorations
Weapon G.Lawful Bors Artillery Jewel III
Magazine/Attack Jewel III
Guardian Jewel I
Head Numinous Crown β Challenger Jewel III
Flawless Jewel II
Medecine Jewel I
Chest Arkvulcan Mail β Challenger Jewel III
Flawless Jewel II
Gloves Arkvulcan Vambraces β Earplug Jewel II
Flawless Jewel II
Adapt Jewel I
Waist Numinous Overlay β Flawless Jewel II

Talisman Chain Charm II N/A

G.Lawfull Bors is still the Best in Slot weapon for Gunlance. It grants you Wide shells, which as mentioned before, are the highest DPS shells. This weapon also grants you a ton of Attack and 3 Decoration slots, among which 2 are level 3 decorations.

You can replace it with the Zoh Shia Weapon called Blazing Lael, which provides you with the Whiteflame Torrent ability. This gives you a chance to deal additional damage after landing an attack. However, this weapon only comes with 1 Level 3 decoration, which makes it slightly less powerful, even though the ability is really nice.

For the weapon decorations you need a Level 3 Artillery in order to max out your shell and Wyvern's Fire damage. Magazine Level 3 is the second decoration you absolutely need! This one will give you the Load Shells skill, which will greatly improve your reloading and your shell capacity, increasing your power further. Magazine also comes with a second skill: which is up to you. Either you take it with Attack for more power, or with Ironwall to max out your guard skill. However, since the build has already a good survivability, we recommend you go for Attack.

This Gunlance build is basically the best of both worlds between fire power and survivability! If you are struggling to block and counter attacks, this build gives up Partbreaker for survivability with the Zoh Shia abilities, while maintaining maximized Burst and Agitator. Mizutsune's Greaves will max out your Burst, while Zoh Shia will keep your agitator maxed out. Combining Arkveld and Zoh Shia's Group skills will allow you to constantly recover health, no matter the situation you are in. making it a perfect build for Gunlancers, since you are usually the first person tanking the Monster.

You will need the Chain Charm level 2 in order to get your Burst skill to level 5. For the Decoration on the gear, you want to put points into Peak performance with Flawless Jewels. Since the gear already gives you high survivability, you can invest some attack power in your jewels instead. You can also switch out Earplugs and Adaptability against more power if you don't mind having to deal with roars or hot/cold situations.

5.2.
