Gunlance HR 1-7 Weapon Crafts
The first thing every hunter knows is keeping their weapon up to date for each hunt is the best path to success. You don't want to get caught in a dangerous hunt with an old one, so here we will cover a comfortable build path that will get you through low rank without needing to farm everything that shows up.
Low Rank Gunlance Weapon Build Path
Hope Gunlance III ➜ Quematrive Culebrina I ➜ Ajara Gunpike I ➜ G Veldian Hasta I
With these 4 steps you will comfortably keep up with the curve of monsters that
come up through the main story, and cover some elemental weaknesses for some of
the more dangerous fights that show up.
- Dragonite Ore x 3
- Machalite Ore x 2
- The Smithy should give you materials to upgrade this a couple of times. The Hope Gunlance III also gets access to Speed Sharpening - which speeds up the sharpening process - and Critical Eye that increases your affinity.
- Quematrice Scale x 3
- Quematrice Igniter x 2
- Quematrice Crest x 1
- The Quematrice weapon is very good as it grants you the Fire Element, which will be very useful against a variety of Monsters you will have to face. It also has strong Normal Shelling.
- Ajarakan Scale x 3
- Ajarakan Ridge x 2
- Ajarakan Jewel x 2
- The Ajarakan weapon is a huge offensive upgrade with its Wide Shelling, offensive guard, and Load Shells. It also adds dps by dealing Blast damage.
- Guardian Scale x 3
- Guardian Pelt x 3
- Guardian Blood x 1
- Tough Guardian Bone x 2
- Right as you come toward the end of the main story, this is an excellent craft for the final fight and to bridge you into High Rank comfortably. This is the first Gunlance that gives you access to Dragon damage, which will be very useful against all the upcoming enemies with dragon weakness. It also gives you access to the Guard skill. It does lack a bit of damage compared to other options, but that can be compensated with gear.

Remember though, if you are struggling to deal with monsters and you have parts lying around for a weapon that fits better your own playstyle, don't hesitate to craft it. You can always go back and farm those parts again later if you need them for something else!
Key Skills for Gunlance
The Gunlance in Monster Hunter Wilds is a weapon type that does benefit from using a specific skill for gameplay reasons. What you will want to keep an eye out for is a set that contains Quick Sheathe.
Ordinarily this is a quality of life skill for other weapons, but for Gunlance, who has rather annoying and long animations, this speeds up the process when you sheathe your weapon, especially very early on. You can swap it out as you progress for more damage focused skills.
Gunlance HR 1-5 Armor Set
Below is the earliest set that can be put together with Quick Sheathe. If you actively upgrade it, it should cover all your needs all the way through low rank.
Gear | Decorations | |
---|---|---|
Head | Alloy Helm | N/A |
Chest | Alloy Mail | N/A |
Gloves | Quematrice Braces | N/A |
Waist | Alloy Coil | N/A |
Legs | Alloy Greaves | N/A |
Talisman | Breaker Charm I | N/A |
The Alloy Set is perfect for early Gunlance. It gives you the Quick Sheathe you want to reduce your sheathe animations, and additionally you get Tremor resistance, which protects you against ground tremors, meaning less risk of being interrupted. On top of that, the Quematrice Gloves will give you Flinch Free which prevents knockbacks.
The Breaker Charm is a good starting Talisman for Gunlance as it is a weapon that is very good at breaking parts, and Partbreaker makes it even easier then.
When it comes to decorations, it is pretty limited how many you have access to early on, so I would recommend putting anything in that sounds like it would make combat more comfortable, such as Artillery if you are lucky enough to get some.
HR 1-5 Armor Set Skills and Set Bonuses
- Quick Sheathe - Level 3
- Tremor Resistance - Level 2
- Flinch Free - Level 1
Gunlance HR 5-7+ Armor Set
Once you are deeper into the story and more parts are unlocked, you can move some of these early game comfort options around to go for a more offensive focused set.
Gear | Decorations | |
---|---|---|
Head | Ajarakan Helm | N/A |
Chest | Ajarakan Mail | N/A |
Gloves | G Rathalos Braces | N/A |
Waist | G Rathalos Coil | N/A |
Legs | Ajarakan Greaves | N/A |
Talisman | Chain Charm I | N/A |
Looking toward High Rank, we will remove the Quick Sheathe pieces in order to replace them with more offensive pieces. The goal will be to focus on the Gunlance's breaking parts abilities. It is already a good weapon for this, but the Ajarakan set will increase this even further.
The 2-piece G Rathalos set additionally increases your damage against weak points and wounds with Weakness Exploit.
When it comes to decorations, it is pretty limited how many you have access to early on, so I would recommend putting anything in that sounds like it would make combat more comfortable, such as Bandolier or Chain if you are lucky enough to get some.
HR 5-7+ Armor Set Skills and Set Bonuses
- Partbreaker - Level 3
- Blast Resistance - Level 1
- Bombardier - Level 1
- Weakness Exploit - Level 2
- Intimidator - Level 1
- Fortifying Pelt - 3-piece
- Rathalos's Flare - 2-piece
