Monster Hunter Wilds: Can You Actually Intercept Huge Attacks?

Jaym0's Avatar by Jaym0

In Monster Hunter Wilds, some monsters have quite annoying attacks that do not always look like they can be intercepted or canceled. This is the case, for example, of Gypceros, who has some sort of massive flash attack that will incapacitate you for quite a while and leave you vulnerable.

You can, of course, choose to run away, but here are a few tips that will let you counter those attacks!

How Do You Counter Massive Attacks?

Reddit user oyasumigungun has shared a very valuable tip that works on Gypceros’ Flash:

This move revolves around using the Binoculars to counter the Flash! Binoculars are not usually the type of item you would think to use during a fight. Unless you want to check if the monster is a crown or not. But most of the time, you do that before the fight starts.

However, you may want to equip your Binoculars on a short-cut access! It seems they can be used to counter monster attacks similar to the Gypceros’ Flash. This is due most likely to the fact that you look through lenses and not directly at the flash.

When he prepares his Flash, you can also shoot at his head with a Focus Strike attack. The head becomes a weakness point at that exact moment, so Focus Strike allows you to cancel it. You have to be fast and Focus at the right moment to strike his head. This will also cancel the attack.

Does It Work for All the Monster Attacks?

Sadly, it will only work for attacks similar to the Gypceros’ Flash. So any massive Monster attack that are not the wipe attacks from Jin Dahaad for example. You will still have to run away or hide behind the rock for those types of attacks, as they can not really be canceled.

But if you take a close look at the monster when it prepares big attacks, their heads or sometimes tail will light up like wounds at that moment. If you strike at the right time, it will cancel their bigger attacks easily.

It is unknown whether the Binoculars specifically work on more attacks, but Focus Strike definitely is a good alternative!
