Mushroomancer is a unique skill in Monster Hunter Wilds. It can be used to turn your Hunter into the ultimate support character, by just eating Mushrooms. This guide will explain how the skill works, why this build is effective, and what equipment and skills you need in order for this to work as intended!
What is the Mushroomancer Skill?
The Mushroomancer skill is not really explained in the game. The tooltip will simply tell you: “Lets you digest mushrooms that would otherwise be inedible and gain their advantageous effects“. If you have the Skill at Level 3, this means you can eat and gain the effects of the following Mushrooms:
- Level 1: Blue Mushrooms and Toadstools
- Level 2: Adds Nitroshrooms and Parashrooms
- Level 3: Adds Mandagoras, Devil’s Blight, and Exciteshrooms

Each of those important Mushrooms has a different effect when you consume it:
Mushroom | Effect |
---|---|
Blue Mushroom | Restores your Health |
Toadstool | Boosts your natural health recovery |
Nitroshroom | Boosts your attack with demonic strength |
Parashroom | Boosts your defense by turning your skin as hard as rock |
Mandragora | Restores your full health and increases the size of your Health Gauge |
Devil’s Blight | Recovers stamina and reduces your stamina depletion |
Exciteshroom | Triggers any effect from any of the other 6 Mushrooms |
Why Go for the Mushrooms Instead of Usual Items?
Mushrooms have a faster eating animation. Sometimes, consuming a potion can be tricky during a fight, especially if you have aggro, and the Monster keeps trying to smash you against a wall!
A mushroom is almost consumed instantly, while a potion will have a 4+ second animation before it takes effect, on top of slowing you down while you drink it. You can equip your Mushrooms in a specific loadout, but they do require being in your Item Pouch.

You need at least one point into Mushroomancer in order to be able to consume at least the first two healing mushrooms. This is one simple way of making use of it.
However, there is a secret build that was discovered, that allows you to use the Level 3 Mushroomancer, combined with other utility skills, to become your party’s ultimate Mushroom Supporter!
How Does the Mushroomancer Build Work?
The idea behind this build is to optimize mushroom consumption to heal and continuously support your team. Combined with support skills like Wide-Range, Free Meal, and Speed Eating, this build makes you an extremely good support no matter the weapon you use.
First, you need the Mushroomancer skill, which can be found on the following equipment:
Gear Piece | Mushroomancer Level |
---|---|
Conga Helm | Level 1 |
Conga Mail | Level 1 |
Conga Greaves | Level 1 |
Conga Vambrances Alpha and Beta | Level 1 |
Conga Coil Alpha and Beta | Level 1 |
Conga Greaves Alpha | Level 1 |
Dober Greaves Alpha | Level 2 |
Melahoa Roots Alpha | Level 3 |
Mushroom Charm | Level 1-3 depending on Charm level |
Fungiform Jewel 2 | Level 1 |

Once you have your Mushroomancer skill level 3, you want to combine this one with the following skills:
- Wide-Range: Shares the effects of consumables with nearby allies.
- Free Meal: Gives a chance not to consume an item when used.
- Speed Eating: Reduces the animation time to ingest mushrooms quickly.
- Botanist and Geologist: Allows you to farm more Mushrooms.
Once you have your skill combination, what you want to do during a Hunt is: consume Mushrooms! When you do that, it will spread to your teammates, with a chance of not being consumed on top of it. Your goal will be to run around your teammates and, well, eat mushrooms, always.
All your teammates will get the buffs from the Mushrooms you eat, making you the ultimate Medic Hunter!
The Best Equipment for a Mushroomancer Build
To get the most out of the Mushroomancer skill, it is recommended to use it with a Hunting Horn. However, it can work with any other weapon as well. Simply the Hunting Horn is already here to buff teammates, so you just add to it, instead of using a DPS build that will instead end up focusing on buffing.
Here is an example of a gear set you can use:
- Sild Hood Alpha – Comes with Level 3 Botanist
- Sild Coat Alpha – Comes with Level 4 Wide-Range
- Melahoa Roots Alpha – Gives you directly a Level 3 Mushroomancer
- Mushroom Charm III – Level 3 Mushroomancer. A good alternative to the Melahoa legs. Gives you room to put on gear with other skills
- Battle Vambrances Alpha – Comes with Level 3 Free Meal
- Azuz Pants Alpha – Comes with Level 3 Geologist
- Gobber Jewel – Equip 3 of those to get level 3 Speed Eating
The Downside of This Build
This build, however, comes with a few downsides:
- Having to carry seven different Mushrooms takes Item Pouch space, so less free spots for anything else
- You need to farm the Mushrooms. This is made easier with the Botanist and Geologist skills, but it can still quickly become redundant to go out your way to get mushrooms
In the end, the Mushroomancer build is perfect if you enjoy playing a support role on hunts without necessarily having to play the Hunting Horn. By using mushrooms and support skills, you can keep your team healed and buffed while remaining useful in combat. You can also experiment with different equipment combinations to make it fit your own playstyle!
