Nu Udra Introduction

Nu Udra Art in Monster Hunter Wilds

Nu Udra is a brand new monster that is being introduced in the sixth generation of Monster Hunter in Monster Hunter Wilds. He is the 3rd apex predator that you'll be facing and is the king of Oilwell Basin. Nu Udra is a completely new monster classification known as a cephalopod. He resembles an Octopus who uses tar to fight his enemies and he can also breath fire and use his tentacles to grab hunters and monsters during combat. Hunters can also cut each of his limbs individually for carves while also making the fight easier. He is also referred in the game as "The Black Flame" but Nu Udra is his real name.

Nu Udra Combat Guide

Nu Udra can pose a bit of a challenge, especially if you're newer to Monster Hunter. But if you’ve played previous titles, you’ll likely find him more manageable. To make your hunt smoother, make sure you bring a water elemental weapon for optimal damage or faster kill times. He’s highly vulnerable to poison, sleep, and stun, while paralysis and blast aren’t particularly effective. All utility items work on him—including flash pods, shock traps, and pitfall traps—with the only exception being sonic bombs, which don’t work at all.

What makes Nu Udra especially unique is that he’s built on a completely new skeleton featuring multiple severable limbs. As a cephalopod, his fighting style is quite unlike anything else you’ve seen in the series, requiring you to keep track of numerous tentacle-based attacks instead of just a couple of arms or wings. More limbs means more angles for attacks, and more to watch out for mid-fight.

One of his most dangerous moves is when he breathes out a wave of fire in front of him that spreads in a wide arc. If it connects, you’ll take significant damage and get inflicted with fireblight, requiring you to roll three times to put the flames out. That said, it’s actually good RNG if he uses this move because it opens up a great window to sidestep to either side and focus on his tentacles for big damage. It’s highly recommended to bring a cutting weapon since you can sever up to four of his tentacles.

If you’re spending a lot of time in front of him, he may try to slap you with one of his front tentacles, then follow up with the other shortly after. These moves are easily dodged, countered, guarded, or offset, so stay alert. Sometimes, he’ll mix it up and use his outer tentacles instead, or swipe them side to side to knock you off balance. I wouldn’t advise trying to offset the smaller tentacle attacks—they come out fast and are better handled with quicker reactions.

At mid-range, he might chuck fiery boulders at you using his tiny front arms. These particular limbs can’t be severed, but the attacks are very slow and easy to avoid. You’ll see them coming a mile away. As you chip away at him, Nu Udra can get visibly irritated and will let out a unique roar—separate from his standard one—which signals that he’s about to go into his spinning tantrum. He’ll whirl around wildly, slamming his tentacles all over the ground and launching tiny fiery projectiles that explode on contact. This is a move that demands immediate evasive action, so start dodging the moment you see it begin.

He also has a grappling move where he extends all of his tentacles outward in an attempt to grab whatever’s in front of him. If he catches you, mash your attack button rapidly to escape, or you’ll be subjected to a brutal fire breath attack. Flash pods won’t save you here, as he’s immune to them during this animation.

Another heavy-hitting move occurs when he raises his front tentacles high while pulling his body back, then slams them down hard after a brief delay. This attack can cause serious damage if it lands, but if you manage to avoid, block, or counter it, you’re rewarded with several seconds of vulnerability where you can punish his limbs freely. For mounting, he has two woundable locations—the top of his head and the back of his rounded membrane-like body. While both are viable, I recommend popping the head wound if possible, as it’s harder to reach consistently from the ground.

Enraged State

Nu Udra’s enraged state is far more dangerous than some other monsters. When enraged, he becomes engulfed in flames and all of his attacks deal fire damage, putting you at constant risk of fireblight. His aggression increases, his combos chain together more rapidly, and with so many limbs flying around, it’s very easy to get clipped if you’re not paying close attention.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Nu Udra is a cool and intense fight that might feel overwhelming at first, but becomes much more manageable once you learn his patterns. The key is to stay focused on chopping his tentacles. Severing them not only reduces his reach and limits his attack options, but it also rewards you with crafting materials.

Keep an eye out for his wide fire breath and the double tentacle slam—those are your best damage windows. Both moves leave him open for extended periods, giving you plenty of time to rack up hits on his limbs. If you’re struggling with his flailing tentacles or find yourself getting caught often, don’t hesitate to bring pitfall and shock traps to hold him still while you go to town on those limbs. Water elemental weapons make a massive difference here since he’s fire-based, offering consistent elemental pressure throughout the fight.

Stick to this strategy, repeat the process, and eventually Nu Udra will stop being a threat and start looking like a fine seafood entrée at your nearest high-end sushi spot.
