Quematrice Combat Guide
Quematrice is a relatively simple monster to hunt, regardless of rank or difficulty level, due to his limited moveset. Even his tempered version is not much of a challenge, making this one of the easiest fights in Monster Hunter Wilds. If you are looking to maximize your damage output, bringing a Water elemental weapon is highly recommended, as Quematrice is highly vulnerable to it. Additionally, he is extremely susceptible to Paralysis and Poison, allowing for quick hunts with the right setup. Flash Pods, Shock Traps, and Pitfall Traps are all effective against him, while Sonic Bombs have no effect and should be avoided.
Quematrice’s attacks are simple and easy to predict. If you are standing in front of him, he will attempt to peck you twice in succession. His only other head-based attack involves lunging forward to try and bite you, but it is slow and easily dodged. However, his main method of attacking comes from his tail, which is his primary weapon against both prey and hunters alike.
If you are standing behind him or next to his tail, he will ignite it and perform a 180-degree spin, attempting to whack you with it. This move is one of his most frequent attacks, but it is easily countered with a Long Sword, blocked with a shielded weapon, or offset with any weapon that has an offset ability.
At times, Quematrice will raise his tail and slam it downward to attack anything in range. This move is telegraphed well in advance and can be easily avoided or countered. He may also swing his tail to the left or right, attempting to hit you depending on your positioning. If you are standing to his side, he may try to reach for you with his tail and ignite the area, setting you ablaze if you are caught in the attack.
His most dangerous move, if it connects, is when he charges forward while spinning his tail, setting fire to everything in his path. However, despite the devastating potential of this move, it remains one of the easiest attacks to counter, block, or evade, making it more of a visual threat than an actual danger.
Conclusion
Quematrice is an incredibly straightforward fight, and targeting his tail from the beginning is the optimal strategy. Severing his tail as quickly as possible will eliminate his ability to ignite it, significantly reducing his damage potential and limiting his attack range. Once his tail is cut, you can choose to attack his head or continue attacking his backside — both are viable options and will lead to a swift victory.
Honestly, Quematrice is arguably easier than Chatacabra, and for an early-game monster, he is a bit of a let down in terms of challenge. If you are still struggling with the fight, make use of environmental hazards, lure him into Tailoths using a Luring Pod for extra free damage, and set up traps if necessary. For his tempered version, be sure to collect his battle remains after destroying his tempered wound and throw them in his face for a huge chunk of free damage with minimal effort. Rinse and repeat the strategy above, and Quematrice will be nothing more than a cooked Kentucky Fried Chicken before you know it.
