Uth Duna Introduction
Uth Duna is a brand new leviathan monster that is being introduced in the sixth generation of Monster Hunter in Monster Hunter Wilds. She is the apex predator of the Scarlet Forest locale and she will be the first repel mission that you encounter during your hunting journey. She also has protective veils that surround her body that need to be broken in order for her to take more damage. As a leviathan who likes to appear during the downpour inclemency period she is not a force a hunter shout trifle with.

Uth Duna Combat Guide
Uth Duna is a formidable yet straightforward opponent, and Thunder elemental weapons are the best choice for dealing optimal damage. She is equally susceptible to Poison, Sleep, Paralysis, and Blast, while Stun is the least effective status ailment against her. All utility items such as Flash Pods, Shock Traps, and Pitfall Traps can be used effectively, but Sonic Bombs do not work and should be avoided.
As a massive tuna-like leviathan, Uth Duna is hard to miss, both in terms of hitting her weak points and dodging her attacks. One of her most common moves is where she lifts up her belly before slamming down onto the hunter. This attack is highly telegraphed and delayed, making it easy to counter, block, or dodge. If you are proficient with weapons such as the Greatsword, Hammer, or Switch Axe, this is an excellent opportunity to offset the attack for a powerful counterstrike. Long Sword users should time their counters, while shielded weapons such as the Lance and Gunlance can block the attack entirely along with Sword & Shield and Charge Blade. Uth Duna also has a power clash, so guarding against her can sometimes trigger it, leading to extra damage opportunities.
Another frequent attack in her arsenal is her lunging bite, where she throws her body forward in an attempt to chomp down on the hunter. This attack is fairly easy to react to, and you can either guard, counter, or dodge accordingly. If you find yourself standing beside her, she may slide her body and arms to either the left or right, attempting to sweep the hunter away.
Her most iconic and visually dramatic move is when she leaps into the air before slamming her entire body onto the ground. This attack inflicts significant damage if it connects, so it is crucial to counter, block, or dodge at the right moment. If you are not confident in your defensive timing, it is best to simply run out of range when you see her preparing this move.
The optimal strategy is to stay at her sides and focus all your attacks on her veils—the large translucent flaps on her body. These gradually get damaged over time, and once they are fully severed, Uth Duna will flip over, leaving her entire body exposed for a massive burst of damage. This is the best opportunity to go all-out with your most powerful combos and maximize DPS.
If you find yourself taking too many hits, make sure to consume a Nulberry to remove Waterblight, which reduces stamina recovery and can severely hinder your mobility over time. You'll know you are hitting the veils correctly when the damage numbers appear in blue. If the damage numbers are orange, then you are hitting her actual body, which deals more overall damage. However, after a certain amount of time, Uth Duna will regenerate her veils, forcing you to repeat the process until the fight is over.
When attacking from the side or behind, be mindful of her 360-degree spin attack, which can knock you away if not properly countered or blocked. Long Sword users can take advantage of this move for a free counter, while other weapons can either guard or dodge when she begins the spin animation. Once Uth Duna is fully exposed, she retains most of her standard moves, but she gains a few additional attacks. One of these is a forward charge, where she swipes at the hunter with her arms.
If you are positioned behind her, be careful of her hind leg lift, as she may attempt to slam her tail down after a short delay. Additionally, even without her veils, she will continue using her massive whale jump attack, so be ready to evade or block. Eventually, Uth Duna will let out a loud roar, signalling that her veils are regenerating. If you are standing too close, the roar will cause damage, so back away immediately when you see this happening. If you plan to hunt Uth Duna repeatedly, investing in Earplugs armor skills may be beneficial, but it is a personal preference.
For tempered Uth Duna hunts, make sure to collect her battle remains after popping a tempered wound. This will provide you with a Heavy Slicing Pod, which can be thrown at her for significant free damage with minimal effort. This extra damage boost should never be ignored.
When mounting Uth Duna, she has three available wound points: her head, middle, and back. When fighting tempered monsters, it is important to plan your wound placements carefully. Opening all three wounds at once will force you to pop all of them when dismounted, as you will be kicked off sooner than usual. Since Uth Duna’s tail is not severable, prioritizing wounds on her head and middle section is the most efficient strategy. Pop the middle wound while mounted, then pop the head wound once dismounted for the best damage optimization.
Enraged State
When enraged, she may chain multiple attacks together, often performing consecutive belly flops—sometimes twice in a row. This aggressive pattern requires extra caution, as getting caught off-guard can be dangerous.
Conclusion
In Conclusion, Uth Duna is a relatively simple apex monster to fight, and some hunters may even find her on the easier side compared to others. While her moveset is somewhat limited, this is expected, given that she is essentially a massive tuna fish. If you are struggling with the fight, consider using a Luring Pod to lead her out of the water and onto land, where she is at a significant disadvantage. However, you really shouldn’t have any major trouble defeating her, as her large size makes her easy to hit, and her slow, predictable movements make dodging simple.
The fundamental strategy remains consistent throughout the hunt—target the veils aggressively, take advantage of her exposed body when she flips over, and continue dodging, blocking, countering, or offsetting her attacks until she is fully subdued. Follow these steps, and before long, she will be nothing more than a massive sushi roll, ready to be served.
