Flail Abilities and Skill Trees for New World
Welcome to our Abilities and Skill Trees page for Flail. Here, we give you an overview of every ability that Flail has. For each of them, we explain what it does, how to best use it, how it works in combination with the weapon's other abilities, and whether or not it is worth picking. Then, we go through all the nodes in each skill tree, discussing their viability in the current meta.
Flail Gameplay

Arcane Smite
- Arcane Smite — 18-second cooldown: Leap forward and strike the ground with arcane force dealing 130% weapon damage to all targets within 2.7m of the impact. Leave behind a hazardous area at the impact point that inflicts a stack of Impairment for 6s to all targets that enter.Impairment deals 10% weapon damage per second and inflicts weaken, reducing their base damage by 10%.
- Epic Flail — Smite hits reduce its own cooldown by 5% per target hit.
- Ironclad Superiority — Grants a bonus based on what shield type is equipped: Round Shield - Smite deals 20% more base weapon damage. Kite Shield - Smite will now stagger targets hit, but damage is reduced to 90% weapon damage. Tower Shield - Gain 30% fortfy for 6s when smite is activated.
- Deflecting Frailty — Allies that enter the hazardous area obtain Deflecting Frailty for 3s, which when attacked will inflict a stacking weaken to enemy attackers when hit, reducing the enemy's damage dealt by 5% per stack for 5s. (Max 5 stacks) Additionally while the effect is active, when allies are hit, they gain 10% lifesteal for 3s.(Deflecting Frailty scales with Focus, increasing its duration to up to 12 seconds.)
Crafting Material: Steel Flail Charm - Burdening Smite: PvP Only: Smite hits against targets extend their active cooldowns by 16%.
Arcane Vortex
- Arcane Vortex — 20-second cooldown: Swirl the flail above the player's head dealing 4 rapid hits of 75% weapon damage in a 3m radius around the player.
- Flailbird — Hitting targets 4 times with arcane vortex will inflict them with root, immobilizing them for 1s.
- Accelerated Advantage — Hitting a target with arcane vortex grants a stacking haste on self, increasing movement speed by 7% for 7s.
- Flailing Stability — All allies within 3m of player during the arcane vortex are cleansed of crowd control status effects (Root, Stun, Slow) and are immune to them for 1 seconds.
Crafting Material: Starmetal Flail Charm - Mending Vortex: Every 2 hits with Vortex will heal you for 25% of the base weapon damage.
Arcane Eruption
- Arcane Eruption — 16-second cooldown: Drag the head of the flail against the ground causing an eruption of arcane energy in front of the player, dealing 120% weapon damage and inflicting two stacks of Impairment for 6s to all targets hit.
- Crippling Strike — Targets hit with the first attack of burst are slowed, reducing their movement speed by 40% for 3s.
- Debilitating Extension — The follow up attack extends the duration of all debilitate status effects (Rend, Weaken, Exhaust, Disease) on the target by 30%.
- Supportive Blessing — The follow up attack consumes one stack of Impairment on the target hit, triggering a chain that will bounce up to 4 times to allies within 6m of player, granting 130% of its total damage as health to each ally it chains to, and 50% of its total damage to self.
Crafting Material: Orichalcum Flail Charm - Powerful Eruption: Eruption hits deal 6% increased damage per stack of Impairment on the target (3 stacks max)
Barrage
- Barrage — 25-second cooldown: Sprint forward up to 10m. Upon reactivating the ability, pressing basic attack, or reaching the end of the sprint, leap forward up to an additional 6m and slam to the ground, dealing 30% weapon damage to targets in range of the flail during the leap and 80% weapon damage upon landing, staggering targets on impact.
- Defensive Rush — Hitting a target with any of barrage's hits will grant a 30% fortify. The fortify has a 2s duration, and every hit extends the duration of the status effect by 2s to a max of 8s.
- Abiding Superiority — Grants a bonus to Barrage based on what shield type is equipped.
- Bulldoze — Barrage can now block attacks while charging forward without consuming stamina, and will push all enemies moved through to the side.
- Flailure to Launch — Barrage's attack now triggers a 2.5m blast of energy around the target on hit, dealing 35% weapon damage to all nearby targets, and granting fortify to all allies within the radius, increasing armor by 20% for 8s.
Crafting Material: Reinforced Steel Flail Charm - Accelerating Barrage: After hitting a target with Barrage's main attack, gain 20% haste for 5s.
Trip
- Trip — 18-second cooldown: Swing the Flail forward latching onto a target dealing 50% weapon damage and knocking them to the ground.
- Flailing Duration — Tripping a target applies a special debuff to the target lasting 3s. Allies that hit the affected enemy will reduce the duration of all damage over time effects on themselves by 10% per hit while active.
- You've Got Flail — Hitting weakened targets with trip will inflict 15% rend for 5s on the target, and granting 15% fortify on self for 5s.
- Destabilize — Adds a follow up heavy attack, that deals 145% weapon damage.
Crafting Material: Reinforced Starmetal Flail Charm - Thwarting Trip: If Trip's first attack hits a target with active grit, the attack deals 20% more base damage.
Warding Bludgeon
- Warding Bludgeon — 22-second cooldown: Perform a spinning leap then swing the flail down to strike targets, dealing 100% weapon damage.
- Stable Impairment — Stamina damage taken is reduced by 25% for 0.5s after activating block.
- Best Friends — Upon ability activation, a nearby ally within 6m is selected and you become linked to them. While the connection is active, they gain empower, increasing their base damage by 15%, and you both gain damage absorption, reducing damage taken by 10% for 8s, or until players are more than 6m apart from each other.
Crafting Material: Reinforced Orichalcum Flail Charm - Crowded Bludgeon: If 2 or more targets are hit with warding bludgeon, even if the hits are blocked, reduce its cooldown by 15%.
