Savage Divide Expedition Guide for New World Aeternum
Welcome to the ultimate guide to master the Savage Divide expedition in New World: Aeternum. This high-stakes expedition will push your skills, teamwork, and strategy to their limits, as this is one of the most challenging expeditions currently in the game.
From the most-effective tactics for taking down these bosses to hidden tips and tricks to overcome the many puzzles you'll encounter, this guide has everything you need to know for the Savage Divide expedition.
Location and General Information
The Savage Divide expedition is located near the southeastern corner of Elysian Wilds. This is one of the most recently launched expeditions to the game, and also one of the most challenging. We recommend that you are level 65 with decent equipment prior to attempting this expedition.
Mob Types
The Savage Divide expedition is filled with primarily beast mob types. With that being said, most of the mobs in this expedition are more vulnerable to Thrust damage, which means that DPS builds that utilize the Spear and Rapier tend to be very effective.
Please note: You will also want to ensure that you use Infused Beast Coatings and Infused Beast Ward Potions for this expedition. This will not only help you maximize your damage output, but also your survivability.
Expedition Layout
This expedition is not very long, but it can get complicated in certain portions due to the unique puzzles that you'll be encountering (more info on that below). When going through this expedition, don't be alarmed if you find yourself in areas that you've already explored; there is naturally some overlapping in areas as you progress with some of these puzzles.
Walkthrough and Puzzles
Throughout this expedition (including right in the beginning), you will be encountering multiple puzzles that involve pedestals and orbs. Whenever you see a pedestal, it means that one of your group members must bring an orb to it.
Please note: When you are holding an orb, you cannot attack, but you can still be attacked. It is best practice that your full team work together to defeat all the mobs in each area first, then for one of the three DPS members of your team to grab the orb and place it on the pedestal.
As you continue your way throughout the expedition, you will encounter a range of beast mobs, and eventually some named mobs, including Styx, a large chameleon that hits very hard, Hodari, a large gorilla that also packs a bit of a punch, and Death Razor, an oversized flower that's a little annoying, but doesn't pack as hard of a punch as the others.
There are not any specific combat mechanics that you need to keep in mind here, other than the fact to make sure your light DPS group members and healers are behind the hit frame from these named mobs. They hit very hard, especially in mutated versions of Savage Divide.
As you continue the expedition after taking down these named enemies, you will be able to continue your way to the next area of the expedition, known as Vast Chasm. As you head this way, you will come across an orb. Make sure one of your group members picks this up. They will need to drop it off at the pedestal near the upcoming door you see. Once you handle the door, you can move forward to the next area - Rockfall.
Once you enter this new area, you will encounter a large enemy named Zyggot. Once again, nothing too crazy to keep in mind when taking this guy down. Once defeated, you'll be able to move forward to grab the next orb. You will want to keep moving forward, where you will then find yourself back in the previous area you've already covered (don't worry, this is supposed to happen). Drop the orb at the pedestal in this area, which will then bring you to the next area, where you'll be welcomed by a large mammoth, named Madhu.
Madhu is easy to take down, but there also is a trick! If you kite him down the center of the previous room, and run behind the large rock in the center of the map, he will actually run right into it and completely break it, uncovering a secret chest for more loot! This is completely optional, so it's okay if you skip this part and just take him down quickly instead.
Continue moving forward, and then you'll encounter the first boss, Kurok (see details below in the next session).
Once you take down Kurok, the rest of the dungeon is pretty straight forward. Continue to take down the many beast mobs you come across, and you'll eventually come across a locked button on the top of a set of stairs. Defeat all of the mobs that appear in this area, and then you'll be able to activate the buttons, leading you to the next named enemy, Lockjaw.
Lockjaw is a large lion, but his looks are a bit deceiving. This is a pretty easy fight, and doesn't require any special mechanics. Take him down, then you'll be able to activate the orb that's sitting next to the bridge. You'll then come across another named enemy and a handful of mobs, and eventually be led to the last orb, which you'll need to pick up and take back to the previous area you were at to open the locked door. Once opened, you will encounter the last boss in this expedition - Mahantaram.
Bosses
This expedition has two large bosses, Kurok and Mahantaram. In expeditions, you can only be picked up from being downed one time before you are forced to respawn, and most boss rooms seal off the entrance once the boss is engaged. This effectively gives you two lives in a boss fight, assuming that your teammates can pick you up when you get knocked down.
Kurok
This boss is an oversized gorilla that packs a punch. As you begin this boss fight, you will quickly identify four different pillars around the map - each representing a different element (nature, ice, fire, and lightning). When the boss interacts with one of these pillars, he will get greatly empowered with that specific element. Once activated, players will then be able to activate the same element by interacting that same pillar.
The specific member of the team that interacts with that specific element is then responsible for that element for the rest of the fight. It is highly suggested that your team determines which element is assigned to each member of the team. This allows your run to be more efficient, and minimize any confusion.
When Kurok activates a pillar, you will see large, elemental circles slowly moving throughout the map. Depending on the color of the circle, you'll be able to identify which elemental pillar you need to activate. Once a member of the team interacts with that specific element, they must then run into that circle, which then destroys it - making everyone's life easier!
If Kurok is still alive even after all four elements have been activated, he will then become empowered with void damage. He will begin throwing balls of void damage at different members of the group, which can deal a large amount of damage. This will continue for the rest of the fight, and is a bit of a DPS check, as it will be up to your time to take down his health and secure the win.
Mahantaram
The final boss of the expedition is Mahantaram, sticking with the "oversized" theme, but this time being a mammoth. Right away you will notice a large crystal above his head - this will indicate which attack he is about to make, so be sure to keep a close eye on this!
- If the crystal lights up with a blue-ish tint, that means arcane lasers are coming.
- If the crystal lights up with fire, it means he will launch two fire balls (these hurt).
- If the crystal lights up with sparks and a lightning bolt, it means lightning will strike down on a player (also hurts).
- If the crystal lights up with a purple tint, it means he will launch several balls of void energy.
This boss ultimately isn't as complicated as Kurok. The important thing to do is to just stay aware of what attacks are coming, and be prepared to dodge when needed. Additionally, it's important that the team quickly takes down any mobs or structures that may spawn during this fight, because if too many of these spawn, it will be too difficult to focus on damaging the boss.
Loot Drops
Below is a list of some of the most sought-after loot that drops within the Savage Divide expedition.
Heartrune
To acquire the Primal Fury Heartrune, you must complete the Savage Divide Excavation. This heartrune is definitely a fun one to use, but currently not used in many builds and is overpowered by other options.
Mutated Drops
Some items can only drop on certain difficulty levels of the mutated version within some expeditions. Below is a list of some of the most sought-after items that you can obtain from this mutated expedition.
- Powerful Cavalier Crest
- Primal Amulet
- Primal Ring
- Primal Earring
- Primal Round Shield
- Primal Kite Shield
- Primal Tower Shield
Artifacts
Once your character reaches max level, you will be given the opportunity to retake this expedition at a more difficult level. When taking down the final boss, Mahantaram, in at least an M1 level of this expedition, you will have a chance of obtaining a rare earring artifact known as Endless Thirst. This earring has some very rare perks, granting you empower and fortify every time you drink a potion, thus making it usable item for most builds.
