Final Fantasy IX – A Beloved Story
Final Fantasy IX is the ninth installment in Square Enix’s wildly popular role-playing game series. It was first released on the PlayStation console on July 7, 2000. Set in the fantasy world of Gaia, the game follows the adventures of Zidane Tribal and his companions as they tackle the themes of identity, war, and destiny.
Final Fantasy IX is often celebrated for its rich storytelling, sweet and loving characters, and a return to the series’ medieval roots. The game has sold over 8.9 million units worldwide and is still, to this day, praised by a large community.
Final Fantasy IX’s 25th Anniversary Festivities
In celebration of the game’s 25th anniversary on July 7, 2025, Square Enix has already started the party with the launch of a commemorative website to honor this milestone. So far, it is only available in Japan, but we can expect it to launch soon for the rest of the world as well.
The site listed various new merchandise related to the game:

A Final Fantasy IX Remake?
The anniversary celebrations have also reopened discussions about a potential remake of Final Fantasy IX. Rumors have developed since a 2021 Nvidia GeForce Now leak listed a Final Fantasy IX remake among other unannounced titles.
Sadly, Square Enix has not officially confirmed the remake for now. However, the launch of the anniversary website and planned projects have definitely ignited the spark again for fans! Some think that a possible remake announcement could be made during the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 Direct. Others say it would make more sense during one of the Game Shows or Conventions over the summer. This would make it fit with the official 25th Anniversary date.
