The release of Minecraft: The Movie, starring Jack Black as Steve, has done more than just entertain; it brought millions of players back to the blocky world. Since the film hit theaters on April 4, Minecraft has seen a big jump in both daily players and overall sales.
According to a report from Windows Central, citing data from Ampere Analysis, the game saw a 9% boost in daily active players the day after release, with that number jumping to 17% by the end of the weekend. Overall, Minecraft’s player base grew by over 30% in just a few days!

Sales also spiked, particularly on Nintendo Switch, where Minecraft already had strong numbers. Switch sales were up 25% even before the movie launched, with another 8% growth afterward.
This is not the first time a show or film has reignited interest in a game.
Just recently, Capcom’s Devil May Cry saw a big resurgence when the Netflix animated series dropped. A number of titles in the series went on sale around the same time on Steam, which, combined with the show’s release hype, caused a sharp rise in purchases and player activity.

With two big examples in just a few months, it is clear: when games hit the big screen (or streaming), players take notice!
