With South of Midnight releasing on April 8, you are about to start an adventure within a mysterious and visually stunning world that is filled with Southern folklore, strange creatures, and dangerous combat. The game is perfect, both for those who are here for the story, and those seeking the action. Here are some essential early game tips to help you survive and have fun from the very beginning.
Explore Everything – Secrets Are Everywhere
South of Midnight rewards exploration. Even in the opening areas, you will find hidden collectibles, lore fragments, and side paths that lead to useful upgrades. Keep an eye out for glowing objects or small environmental signals that hint at something hidden.
You will want to find everything. Hidden areas can also lead to more stories. You will find items, notes, and more that will lead you to more tragic and wonderful backstories on other characters or even Mythical Creatures!
Exploration also rewards you with the in-game currency called “Floof“, which you will need for various things, such as upgrading your skill tree. The more you explore, the faster your upgrade.

Master the “Rhythm-Based” Combat
Combat in South of Midnight relies on a rhythmic, timed approach. Spamming attacks won’t get you far. Pay close attention to your enemy’s attack patterns and time your counters and strikes carefully; it makes a huge difference early on. Use your Dodges as Attacks and Defense. When you dodge with perfect timing, you get a bonus: a perfect dodge sends out a blast of energy that can stagger enemies around you and deals damage.
Use Your Weaving Powers Early and Often
The game introduces magical Weaving abilities early in the story. Do not forget to use them in combat and exploration, as they can open up new paths, stun enemies, or trigger environmental effects that work in your favor.
Prioritize Movement Upgrades
Mobility is key in both exploration and combat. If you come across opportunities to improve your dodge, sprint, or platforming skills, grab them!
Listen to NPCs and Read Everything
South of Midnight is a game of stories. It is packed with deep lore and hints hidden in dialogue and notes. NPCs often drop clues about puzzles, enemy weaknesses, or hidden areas as well, so do not ignore them!
Save Often and Backtrack
Some areas may seem inaccessible at first. Later, with new powers or items, they open up. Make a mental note (or use the map) and revisit places you could not reach earlier – there is often a good reward waiting.
