Kalecgos Encounter Guide: Strategy, Abilities, Loot
Kalecgos is the first boss you will encounter in Sunwell Plateau on the Isle of Quel'Danas. Kalecgos is a relatively simple fight mechanically that will require your raid to be constantly aware of their debuffs and the health of two different bosses, but requires relatively low DPS and healing compared to other encounters inside the raid. Check out our in-depth guide below to prepare as much as possible for your encounter with Kalecgos.
Overview
Kalecgos is the first boss you will encounter in the Sunwell Plateau raid instance. Kalecgos is a fairly straightforward boss that has some random elements to it that can both make the boss considerably easier, or much more difficult but if you react correctly this randomness should never be cause for a wipe. This encounter will require three tanks and any extra Arcane resistance the raid can manage without sacrificing stats otherwise should be considered when preparing for this boss. Check out the mechanics listed below so you will know how to properly handle this boss.
Role-Specific Tips for Kalecgos
Healer Tips
If your raid is lacking Arcane resistance the damage can at times be a bit high but the main focus should be on keeping your tank in both the Physical and the Spectral realm alive, make sure to assign a healer to the tank in each realm and stay aware of Spectral Exhaustion so there is always a healer ready to heal your tank in the Spectral realm.
DPS Tips
Make sure damage dealers are properly assigned between both the Physical and Spectral realm to ensure that Kalecgos and Sathrovarr are dying at a similar speed, as close to even as possible. Stay aware of the various Wild Magic effects; Wild Magic (Black) increases your threat generation by 100% and can easily lead to you pulling aggro if you are not aware of it.
Tank Tips
Having three tanks is required for this encounter; you will need a tank to hold Kalecgos and Sathrovarr but due to Spectral Exhaustion a third tank is necessary to ensure there is always someone who is able to tank Sathrovarr in the Spectral realm. Kalec can tank Sathrovarr for short periods of time while tanks rotate but if Kalec dies inside of the Spectral realm your raid will instantly wipe.
Kalecgos Abilities
Physical Realm
- Frost Breath — deals a massive amount of Frost damage to anyone in a cone in front of the boss and reduces attack speed by 75% for 12 seconds.
- Tail Lash — deals a small amount of Physical damage and stuns any players located directly behind the boss.
- Arcane Buffet — deals a small amount of Arcane damage to all players in the raid but stacks and is applied every eight seconds so the damage scales very quickly. This debuff can be removed by entering the Spectral realm.
- Wild Magic — will be cast on random members of the raid;
this debuff has both beneficial and harmful effects, and there are six different
versions of this debuff.
- Wild Magic (Black) — increases threat generation by 100%.
- Wild Magic (Blue) — reduces the cost of spells by 50%.
- Wild Magic (Green) — increases healing done by 100%.
- Wild Magic (Purple) — reduces casting time by 50%.
- Wild Magic (Red) — reduces your chance to hit with melee and ranged attacks by 50%.
- Wild Magic (White) — increases damage done by critical strikes by 100%.
- Spectral Blast — every 15-20 seconds Kalecgos will target a random member of the raid (he cannot target his current aggro target) and deal a large amount of Arcane damage to them and anyone near them. The person targeted by the Spectral Blast will be teleported to the Spectral Realm and a portal will spawn at the location of the blast that will allow players to enter the Spectral realm by interacting with it. After 60 seconds players will automatically be removed from the Spectral Realm and gain the debuff Spectral Exhaustion which will prevent them from entering the Spectral realm again for 60 seconds.
Spectral Realm
- Corrupting Strike — deals a large amount of Shadow damage to the person tanking Sathrovarr
- Shadow Bolt Volley — deals a moderate amount of Shadow damage to three random players.
- Curse of Boundless Agony — deals a scaling amount of Shadow damage to the player afflicted with this debuff. This debuff will jump to another player when it is dispelled or the player with the debuff dies. The damage increases as time goes on so it must eventually be dispelled when the damage feels too high to deal with as the damage-over-time effect resets to its lowest damage value when dispelled.
Strategy for Kalecgos
Pulling the Boss
Pulling Kalecgos is extremely straightforward, but he is a typical dragon so make sure no one is in front of him other than the person assigned to tank him and no one is behind him to ensure no one is hit with tail swipe. The raid should orient themselves in one half of the circular boss room where you will be facing Kalecgos to ensure everyone is in range of heals. Threat is crucial on this boss to minimize the risk of someone getting Wild Magic (Black) and potentially pulling aggro and getting the raid hit with Kalecgos' Frost Breath.
Physical Realm
Kalecgos is a one-phase encounter but there are two different fights taking place at the same time: one in the Physical realm where you will be fighting against Kalecgos and one in the Spectral realm where you will be fighting Sathrovarr. There should be three pre-assigned groups to go down into the Spectral realm to fight Sathrovarr as both Kalecgos and Sathrovarr must die at roughly the same time to complete the encounter. These groups should consist of an equal amount of DPS, healers and a single tank. The rotation is not important as long as you have the correct amount of players in each realm at any given time to ensure that both bosses are dying at a similar rate. Due to the stacking nature of Arcane Buffet it is important that all players go down at some point in order to remove their stacks; players who wear more Arcane resist or classes that are able to better handle Magic damage should be assigned to later groups in the rotation. Stay aware of Spectral Blast as it is very likely that your group assignments may get disrupted if an assigned player gets targeted early so make sure Tanks and Healers especially are aware of who is inside of the Spectral realm. Players can only remain inside the Spectral realm for 60 seconds and will be unable to return to it for another 60 due to the effect of Spectral Exhaustion thus the importance of three groups.
Players in the Physical realm should remain spread to mitigate the damage dealt by Spectral Blast but remain close enough that they are able to click the portal spawned to enter the realm. Other than staying aware of when your group should be in the Spectral realm the only major mechanic to focus on is Wild Magic; take full advantage of beneficial effects such as Wild Magic (Green) or Wild Magic (Blue) while carefully monitoring harmful ones such as Wild Magic (Black). Kalecgos is not a mechanically intensive fight but will demand a lot of healing and proper coordination from your DPS to ensure both bosses have a similar amount of health and are killed at the same time.
Spectral Realm
Once inside the Spectral realm it is crucial that members of the raid spread evenly around the room to mitigate the damage from Shadow Bolt Volley. The only other major mechanic to focus on in the Spectral realm is Curse of Boundless Agony so ensure there is at least one player in the Spectral realm who is able to decurse at all times. This should be dispelled once it starts ticking for roughly 20% of its target's health if not a bit sooner to mitigate the chance of a Shadow Bolt Volley and Curse tick instantly killing someone. A tank should always be present in this realm — though Kalec can tank Sathrovarr for short periods of time, if Kalec dies the raid will instantly wipe.
Upon either Kalecgos or Sathrovarr reaching 10% hp both bosses will gain the buff Crazed Rage so try to make sure the bosses hit 10% at roughly the same time to mitigate the extra damage caused by this effect.
