The Lurker Below Guide: Strategy, Abilities, Loot
The Lurker Below is usually the second boss you will encounter in the Serpentshrine Cavern 25-player raid instance. Lurker takes full advantage of the environment around him, demanding players to use the water and the platforms surrounding Lurker to best handle and avoid his mechanics.
Overview
The Lurker Below is one of your options for the second boss that you encounter in the Serpentshrine Cavern raid instance. To summon The Lurker Below you will need a member of your raid with 300 Fishing skill to fish up the pool in center of the six trash platforms. it is required to clear these six platforms of trash to 'boil' the water, killing the fish that inhabit it. Attempting this boss while the fish are still alive will make it nearly impossible.
Role-Specific Tips for The Lurker Below
Healer tips
Positioning is a big part of this boss as there will be small groups on each of the three smaller platforms as well as the ring actually surrounding Lurker, so making sure a healer has range on every member of the raid is crucial and should be coordinated before pulling.
The largest amount of damage will occur when the adds spawn during the intermission. Have cooldowns ready and do not be afraid to utilize your personal crowd control abilities if the mobs that spawn are not properly handled.
Do not be afraid to jump into the water to avoid Lurker's Spout
ability. It is better to take damage from the water than be knocked away and
take damage from Spout. Make sure not to spam jump because you will take a new
instance of damage every time you re-enter the water.
DPS tips
Hunters, Warlocks, and Mages should be positioned on the three smaller platforms near the center ring where Lurker will spawn to crowd control the Ambushers that spawn. It is important to coordinate who will be on which platform prior to pulling the boss.
Do not be afraid to jump into the water to avoid Lurker's Spout
ability. It is better to take damage from the water than be knocked away and
take damage from Spout. Make sure not to spam jump because you will take a new
instance of damage every time you re-enter the water.
Ranged DPS do not need to worry about threat on Lurker himself. Lurker only has a melee threat table so if you are out of his melee radius he will be unable to hit you.
Tank Tips
Tanks need to be aware of when the intermission will begin and have taunts and high-threat-generating abilities ready to pick up the adds as soon as they spawn. The intermission can be the most dangerous part of the boss if the adds are not properly handled.
Keeping gap-closing abilities such as Intercept ready to use
can make a big difference when hit with
Whirl. If no tank is in melee
range Lurker will turn to the next-highest person on threat who is in melee
range and can quickly kill any melee damage dealers if they re-enter melee range
before a tank.
Do not be afraid to jump into the water to avoid Lurker's Spout
ability. It is better to take damage from the water than be knocked away and
take damage from Spout. Make sure not to spam jump because you will take a new
instance of damage every time you re-enter the water.
The Lurker Below Abilities
Spout — Spout is a beam of water that will come from in front of Lurker. The boss will slowly rotate while still spewing water; being hit by this will knock you back and deal a significant amount of damage. Jump into the water and submerge yourself to avoid being hit by this.
Whirl — This deals a small amount of Physical damage to everyone in melee range and knocks them back.
Water Bolt — Water Bolt is only cast when no one is in melee range of Lurker. It will one-shot anyone targeted by it, so make sure someone is in melee range at all times.
Geyser — Geyser is an ability that will target a random raid member, knocking back and dealing damage to everyone within 10 yards of the targeted player. It is important to be spread at all times to avoid too many people being affected by each cast of Geyser.
Strategy for The Lurker Below
Pulling the Boss
The Lurker Below boss fight occurs on a small series of platforms located in
the water. The main tank should position themselves so they are not facing any
of the three smaller platforms that surround the large circular platform Lurker
will spawn inside of. DPS with crowd control abilities such as
Mages, Warlocks, and
Hunters should spread themselves on the three smaller
platforms in order to prepare to crowd control the adds that will spawn during
the intermission. The remaining DPS and healers should spread along the circular
platform to minimize the impact of Lurker's Geyser ability.
Phase One
The majority of the fight will take place while Lurker is above water. The
tank should position on the inside edge of the platform but not in quite in the
water to minimize the distance that Whirl will inevitably knock them
back. It is important that the tank is the first person back into melee range as
the Lurker cannot ranged attack if there is anyone in melee range. During this
phase the main focus is to stay spread to minimize the damage caused by
Geyser and being ready to jump into the water to avoid being hit by
Spout, but otherwise it is largely just a DPS and healing check.
This phase lasts two minutes; after this time has elapsed Lurker will submerge
and begin the intermission.
Intermission
When the Lurker submerges adds will spawn: two Coilfang Ambushers on each of the three smaller platforms surrounding the main platform and three Coilfang Guardians on the main platform. It is important that each of the Coilfang Ambushers on the smaller platforms are crowd controlled by the pre-assigned raid members and the Coilfang Guardians are focused down on the main platform. Once the Guardians are dead you can begin to kill the Ambushers but make sure you have a predetermined order of which you will kill first to avoid too many becoming active at once. The Intermission only lasts a minute, so the faster you deal with the adds that have spawned the less you will have to worry about when Lurker emerges again from the water.
