Grobbulus Encounter Guide: Strategy, Abilities, Loot
Grobbulus is the second encounter of The Construct Quarter in Wrath of the Lich King Classic's version of the Naxxramas Raid and is commonly the eleventh encounter of the instance as a whole. Do not forget to be aware of the various Raid Buffs and Debuffs as you work to optimize your Raid Composition for this encounter's mechanics!
Overview of Grobbulus in Wrath of the Lich King Classic's Naxxramas
Grobbulus is the second boss of The Construct Quarter that you will face in Naxxramas, and will act as an important test of both positioning and patience. If all goes well, this encounter will be an easy one, but if handled poorly things will quickly spiral out of control.
Role-Specific Tips for Grobbulus
DPS Tips
- Avoid standing in any of the Poison Clouds spawned throughout this encounter.
- If you are afflicted with the Mutating Injection debuff, run to a far away location that already has a nearby Poison Cloud and either allow the debuff to expire or be dispelled.
- If you are ranged, make sure to target the Fallout Slimes so that they are defeated quickly.
Healer Tips
- Position yourself in the middle of the room to reduce how often you need to move.
- Be very careful to not instinctually dispel the Mutating Injection debuff. Either wait for the player with the debuff to call for a dispel or simply let it time out on its own.
Tank Tips
- This fight may be solo-tanked if you desire, as a second tank is only useful for handling the Fallout Slimes that occasionally spawn during this encounter.
- You will need to slowly drag Grobbulus around the outside edge of his room, moving every time a new Poison Cloud is created.
- Do not move more than you have to, so that you can maximize your space in the room.
- Make sure that Grobbulus only hits you with his frontal Slime Spray ability.
Grobbulus Abilities
- Poison Cloud — Grobbulus will frequently create Poison Clouds beneath his feet that grow over time. Standing in these clouds will deal heavy damage to players.
- Mutating Injection — Grobbulus will occasionally afflict players with this debuff for 10 seconds. After this debuff expires or is dispelled a Poison Cloud is created where the player was standing, in addition to dealing a burst of Nature damage to any players within 20 yards of the location.
- Slime Spray — This ability is a frontal cone cast by Grobbulus, causing heavy Nature damage to any players hit. In addition, a Fallout Slime will be spawned for each player hit (a minimum of one, as the tank cannot avoid this ability).
Strategy for Grobbulus
Begin by engaging Grobbulus at the bottom of the ramp he occasionally wanders to, with ranged players and healers standing in the middle of the room. Immediately drag Grobbulus to the nearest edge of the room before gradually rotating around the outer wall as more Poison Clouds are created. The direction you choose to move around the room does not matter, so long as everyone is aware of it.
For melee DPS and the primary tank, moving Grobbulus around the room while avoiding Poison Clouds and Slime Spray will be the main difficulty of this fight, as it is important to not spawn any unnecessary Fallout Slimes. Any slimes that do spawn should be primarily defeated by the ranged DPS.
Finally, make sure to run sufficiently far away if you have the Mutating Injection debuff so that you do not blow up on your raid members or create an awkwardly-positioned Poison Cloud. If done correctly, you will have plenty of space in the room still by the time Grobbulus is defeated.
