Overview of Malygos in Wrath of the Lich King Classic's Eye of Eternity
Malygos is the first and only boss in the Eye of Eternity Raid instance but can only be activated if a member of your raid has completed the quest starting from the Key to the Focusing Iris which drops from Sapphiron inside of Naxxramas. Make sure to check out those guides for how to best handle Sapphiron and the bosses required to get to him.
DPS Tips
- Position in a way that you can take advantage of the buff zone that is left after killing Power Spark.
- Ensure your UI has means to track vehicles as it will be required for the final phase.
- Mages can and should Spellsteal the Haste buff from the Nexus Lord adds that spawn during the intermission.
Tank Tips
- Ensure the boss is positioned in a way that the raid can take full advantage of the buff zone left by Power Spark without getting hit by the breath.
- Ensure your UI has means to track vehicles as it will be required for the final phase.
Healer Tips
- Position yourself preemptively between the boss and the spark so you can make sure your raid can take advantage of the buff zone as well as keeping them all in range.
- Ensure your UI has means to track vehicles as it will be required for the final phase.
Malygos Abilities
- Arcane Breath — Deals a massive amount of Arcane damage to anyone in front of Malygos as well as an arcane explosion-like effect shortly after the initial breath attack on anyone who was hit by the breath.
- Vortex — Malygos will fly into the air, pulling players upward into a powerful swirling vortex that will deal about 2,000 Arcane damage per second. This ability will constantly move your character so you will be unable to cast but you will still be able to use instant abilities.
- Arcane Storm — Deals a moderate amount of Arcane damage to random players in the raid.
- Power Spark — Malygos will open a rift summoning a spark on the outside edge of the platform, the Spark will travel slowly towards Malygos if it makes it to him it will increase his damage dealt by 50%, if you kill the Spark it will spawn a zone on the ground increasing the damage dealt of anyone inside of it by 50%.
- Haste — is an ability casted by the Nexus Lords during the 2nd phase/intermission, this will increase spell casting/attack speed by 100%.
- Arcane Overload — will attack a random player dealing moderate Arcane damage but most importantly spawning a large purple Dome that will grant you 50% reduced damage taken while inside.
- Deep Breath — Malygos will occasionally take a deep breath, dealing massive Arcane damage to everyone not on a disk.
- Arcane Pulse — will deal massive arcane damage to anyone within 30 yards of Malygos during the drake phase.
- Static Field — creates a zone of arcane energy dealing massive arcane damage to anyone inside of it.
- Surge of Power — Malygos will fixate on a random player during the drake Phase and channel a beam dealing massive Arcane damage to them.
Strategy for Malygos
Phase 1
Malygos should be positioned almost exactly where he lands in the center of room facing away from the raid; Malygos has no tail swipe so make sure to take advantage of this to avoid parrying. The raid should be loosely stacked either behind or beside Malygos. The first phase is largely a tank and spank other than his Vortex ability which just needs to be healed through, while also dealing with the Power Sparks. A Power Spark will spawn in a random direction outside of the platform but move slowly inward toward Malygos. It must be killed or Malygos will gain a massive damage buff, but when it is defeated it will create a zone that grant anyone standing inside of it a 50% damage buff; make sure to position inside of it for maximum damage.
Phase 2
Phase 2 begins when Malygos reaches 50% health. At 50% health Malygos will leave the platform, becoming unattackable but summoning Nexus Lords that you will have to deal with. This phase ends when all of the Nexus Lords have been killed. During this phase the raid should spread loosely around the platform to avoid too many people taking damage from Arcane Overload, but close enough to the barrier that it spawns to make sure you are able to get inside to limit the damage dealt by Deep Breath. Melee DPS and tanks should be focused on killing Scion of Eternity because Nexus Lords will be flying around the platform on disks that make them unable to be attacked by Melee DPS, so the range should be focusing on getting them down as quickly as possible. Each time a Nexus Lord dies their disk will drop down to the platform and a melee DPS will be able to ride the disk allowing them to attack the remaining Nexus Lords.
Phase 3
The third and final phase begins when all Nexus Lords have been killed. Malygos will shatter the platform and every player will mount a red drake, all of which have the same abilities. It is crucial that your UI shows vehicle frames as it is an entirely separate pool of resources from your base character. During this phase your main goal is to stay alive. Malygos will occasionally cast Static Field, which will spawn an arcane zone that deals massive damage to anyone inside of it, and Surge of Power which will fixate a beam of Arcane energy on a random player dealing massive damage to them. The player chosen by Surge of Power MUST use Flame Shield or risk dying. The DPS rotation on your drake should look something like:
- Flame Spike 2-3 times depending on your latency and your comfort maintaining the Engulf in Flames debuff
- Cast Engulf in Flames to use your Combo Points and stack the debuff.
Healers in this phase should be using Revivify to spot heal and generate Combo Points. Life Burst should be used to consume your Combo Points when either the raid takes a considerable amount of damage from the spawning of a Static Field, or if you are just going to cap on combo points otherwise.
Make sure that you keep your Engulf in Flames stacks up and Malygos will melt in no time!
