Best Gems for Protection Warrior in Phase 3 of Wrath of the Lich King
Below is a list of the recommended gems for a Protection Warrior in Wrath of the Lich King Classic. Be sure to meet your Meta Gem requirements by using all of the required colors. It is typically recommended to only use the minimum gems required to activate your Meta Gem and then use Blue Gems in the rest of your open sockets unless the socket bonus is great. Early on you may need to prioritize gemming into Defense Rating to reach crit immunity.
Phase 3 introduces epic gems which can be obtained from multiple sources, making them readily available early on. Try to to use epic gems over rare gems as much as possible, especially in best in slot gear as they offer a great stat increase.

Best Consumables and Checklist for Protection Warrior in Wrath of the Lich King
Below is a list of the recommended consumables for a Protection Warrior in Wrath of the Lich King Classic. Some consumables have multiple options depending on your needs, be sure to choose accordingly.
- Flask of Stoneblood
- Indestructible Potion & Runic Healing Potion
- Rhinolicious Wormsteak or Worg Tartare
- Saronite Bomb & Global Thermal Sapper Charge
- Glyph of Taunt, Glyph of Cleaving & Glyph of Shockwave
- Heavy Frostweave Bandage
Flasks
Flask of Stoneblood is the only flask recommended as it provides by far the greatest buff out of all of the options, giving you a huge amount of extra health. You will want to use a flask most of the time.
Elixirs
Elixirs are generally not used by Protection Warriors in WotLK, but they are fairly close to the stats gained from flasks. Elixir of Expertise and Elixir of Accuracy are both viable if you need them to reach either Hit or Expertise caps. Elixir of Protection is the guardian elixir that you use for the large boost to Armor. You also get Attack Power from your Armored to the Teeth talent.
Potions
Indestructible Potion will be your main potion that you use during WotLK. Similar to Armor potions from previous expansions, this potion grants a high Armor value for a two-minute duration, giving it much higher value than any other potion choice. In addition to the defensive benefits, with your talent Armored to the Teeth, you will also gain 97 Attack Power for the entire two minute duration.
It is recommended to always carry a stack of Runic Healing Potions on you as they can sometimes save your life, especially during trash pulls.
Food Buff
Your food buff choice will change depending on your needs. Snapper Extreme or Worg Tartare are good choices if you are lacking Hit Rating from your gear. If you are not lacking Hit Rating, you will want to use Rhinolicious Wormsteak for the Expertise Rating.
Best Profession Consumables for Protection Warrior in Wrath of the Lich King
Here we will list the unique consumables provided by each individual profession.
Engineering
If you are an Engineer you will want to carry Runic Healing Injector on you instead of the normal potion counterpart as this injector restores an additional 25% health to Engineers. You will also want to stock up on explosives to deal high damage on AoE pulls.
Inscription
You will want to carry a few of each of these glyphs on you to swap around depending on the fight. Glyph of Cleaving and Glyph of Shockwave are preferred on trash and boss encounters with multiple mobs to Cleave. When fighting a boss that requires tank swaps, you will want to be sure to use Glyph of Taunt.
First Aid
While these are minor and will see little use, it is always recommended to keep them on hand for the quick, Mana-free heal.
