Bloodlord Mandokir Guide: Strategy, Abilities, Loot
Bloodlord Mandokir is the first optional boss in Zul'Gurub, and can be found in the south-east corner of the raid. This is one of the more unique fights in the instance, and you can expect at least a few people to die to the Bloodlord's gaze!
Bloodlord Mandokir Summary by Role
Tanks
- You will want 3 tanks.
- One tank will want to hold Bloodlord Mandokir while the other two hold his raptor away from the raid.
- The boss sometimes will charge a ranged target, dropping threat. The tank at the time should taunt him quickly.
- Keep the boss facing away from the raid to not cleave the melee.
Healers
- There are no special healing mechanics here, just make sure you are in range of the melee and all the tanks.
- If your group opts to kill the raptor first, make sure you have healing cooldowns for the minute after the raptor dies, as the tanks will be taking heavy damage.
- Have some sort of tracker to watch for Threatening Gaze.
- Be aware that anyone who dies will not stay dead during the fight. Instead, you will be resurrected by some NPCs, but for every 3 players that die, the boss will get stronger.
DPS
- Your group should have planned out if they want to burn the boss or kill the raptor first. Make sure you know which strat you are using.
- Melee should be on the boss and ranged should be behind melee. One ranged, preferably a Hunter, should be at max range away from the boss and the raid group to bait charges.
- Have some sort of tracker to watch for Threatening Gaze.
General Tips for Bloodlord Mandokir
- Everyone in the raid needs a way to watch for Threatening Gaze. If you are targeted with it, you cannot move, cast, or do any action until it is gone, otherwise you will be instantly killed.
- Keep a Hunter away from the raid as the farthest target from the boss to bait his charge.
- Make sure you know whether you are killing the raptor or not before pulling the boss.
- Be aware that you will not stay dead if you die on this fight. Instead, you will be resurrected by some NPCs, but for every 3 players that die the boss will get stronger.
Important Abilities
- If you are targeted by Threatening Gaze, you need to stop doing everything: do not move, do not use spells, basically just do not touch your keyboard for the duration.
- The boss will sometimes charge the farthest ranged target, so have someone baiting it.
Strategy for Bloodlord Mandokir
Start the fight by having your two off-tanks pull the raptor away from the boss, swapping at 3-4 stacks of the bleed he puts on the tanks. There are two main strategies for doing this fight, either killing the raptor at the start or leaving it alive. If you kill the raptor, it frees up your off-tanks, but the boss becomes much stronger and enrages for a full minute. If you are doing Zul'Gurub with a relatively lower gear level, this is probably the better strategy. If you feel confident however, you can instead just burn the boss, significantly shortening the fight, but can be slightly more risky, since you will not have off-tanks to help with the boss.
Once you have your strategy down, you can kill the correct target. While everyone is burning either the boss or raptor, keep a Hunter 40+ yards from the boss to bait his charge. The Hunter should use Feign Death whenever they are charged to not accidentally take a boss melee since this is also a threat drop. Everyone in the raid also needs to be paying very close attention for if they get Threatening Gaze. If you are targeted by it, you need to stop doing everything: do not move, do not use spells, basically just do not touch your keyboard for the duration. If you take any action while targeted, you will instantly die. Luckily, due to a fight mechanic, you will not stay dead. Any time someone dies during the encounter, the Chained Spirits will resurrect you, but for every three players that die, the boss will "level up", becoming significantly more powerful. If the boss levels up more than a couple of times, you will probably need to reset him.
Bloodlord Mandokir also has some abilities that he will use in melee. He will cast a cleave, a whirlwind, and an AoE fear. These all are mostly unavoidable by the melee and just need to be watched for, since they can be deadly.
