Gold Swapping/Trading in Classic and Between Classic and Retail Now Prohibited by Blizzard

Blizzard has officially updated its stance on gold trading in WoW, marking a significant policy change. According to a revised support article, players are now strictly prohibited from exchanging gold between different realms, factions in Classic, or game versions (such as Classic and retail WoW).

The change happened yesterday, but was changed again since then, to narrow the scope to just Classic and trades between Classic and Modern. The updated rule replaces the previous “at your own risk” approach with a clear “prohibited” designation. Any players involved in such trades risk account penalties, including permanent closure.

What’s Changed?

Previously, Blizzard warned players that cross-realm or cross-faction trades were unsupported and risky, but didn’t directly forbid them. Blizzard would investigate scams but wouldn’t reimburse lost gold or items.

Now, the support page states:

Trading gold across WoW Classic realms or factions, or different versions of WoW (Modern to Classic) is prohibited. Such trades, particularly with those you do not know or trust, are often linked with gold selling activities, which contribute to realm economy issues, botting, and account compromises. Engaging in trades of this nature can result in account penalties, up to and including, account closure.

Thanks to gumdropsEU for the heads-up. It’s best to refrain from trading gold with other players if you don’t want to risk your account getting banned.
