The resurrecting has begun! Blizzard have started returning the characters lost to DDoS attacks to life. They are also returning them to Hardcore realms after they went back to Normal ones. For now, the focus is on characters lost during the March 24th attacks. However, Blizzard also said they will consider doing the same for DDoSes after that date.
They also note that if they do this again in the future, players should not move their dead characters to the Normal realm, as they will not get moved again.
We have begun resurrecting player-characters that were lost during recent distributed-denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks on our Hardcore realms. Our preliminary focus has been on characters that died during attacks on 24 March, and we are expanding the scope of our review to consider resurrections of characters lost during confirmed DDoS incidents after those dates.
For dead characters that were transferred from Hardcore realms to Normal (PvE) realms, we have taken steps to return these characters to the Hardcore realms in the state they were in prior to being transferred, and we have flagged them to be playable as though they never died when you next log in.
- You must go to the character log-in screen on your Hardcore realm and log into the previously-deceased character to complete the process.
In the event of future character deaths due to DDoS attacks, we will only restore characters that remain on their Hardcore realm. Please note that in the future, should your character die due to a DDoS attack on a Hardcore realm, it cannot be restored if the character is subsequently transferred to a Normal (PvE) realm.
We are continuing to strengthen the resilience of WoW realms and the speed at which we respond to character deaths on Hardcore realms caused by DDoS attacks.
