Mage Cosmetics
On this page, we present you with extra spells and effects that exist just for flavour and fun that Mages have access to. None of these are required to play Mage from a technical aspect, they simply exist for fun.
While not part of how to actually play a Mage, a large part of the fun of playing a Mage is simply messing around with class mechanics or cosmetic variants on spells you already have. Perhaps the most well-known example of this is the Polymorph variants, where the Mage can select different animals to turn the target into, but there are a few more things in the game that not everyone knows about.
Polymorph Variants
There are a fair number of these, and they are spread fairly wide across the world. They are functionally identical to the normal Polymorph spell, just with different animals.
- Polymorph: Pig — Trained by The Amazing Zanzo, located in either version of Dalaran. He wanders around and despawns, so keep an eye out.
- Polymorph: Cat — Sold by Endora Moorehead, Northrend's Dalaran. Limited stock; check back if it is missing.
- Polymorph: Turtle — Rarely fished up in pools in Cataclysm zones.
- Polymorph: Rabbit — Obtained during Noblegarden from any of the vendors for 100 chocolates. Can only be seen by a Mage, so you cannot buy it for your alt.
- Polymorph: Porcupine — Rare drop from porcupine mobs in Pandaria.
- Polymorph: Bear — Rare drop from polar bear mobs in Northrend.
- Polymorph: Monkey — Rare drop from Hozen in Pandaria.
- Polymorph: Direhorn and Polymorph: Bee — Sold by the Zandalari Empire and Storm's Wake reputation vendors at Revered. Sadly, faction-locked.
- Polymorph: Duck — Located in a cave at 66.43, 31.79 in the Azure Span, in the frozen waterfalls just south of Rhonin's Shield. The entrance is covered by rocks and has a duck sitting above it. You can Blink past the rocks and pick up the quest at the end of the cave to get the spell.
- Polymorph: Mosswool — Located in Dornogal, at the very northeast portion of the city, is a place called The Corridors, which leads under the city. Simply follow it to the end and take the quest in the room.
A good number of these can also be obtained via the Auction House. Be sure to check if you have spare gold and do not wish to farm drops! Searching for "Polymorph" should bring up any available on your realm.
Bonus Spells
This section lists spells that you have to go out of your way to obtain and are not provided to you automatically upon levelling.
Illusion
Sold by Endora Moorehead in Northrend's Dalaran, Mystical Tome: Illusion will teach you Illusion. Illusion allows you to either be turned into a random race with random outfit if used without a target, or into the targeted player. It breaks on mounting but not combat. Oddly, targeting a hostile player will produce a debuff version that you cannot click off.
Arcane Linguist
Sold by Endora Moorehead in Northrend's Dalaran, Mystical Tome: Arcane Linguist grants the ability to read, but not speak, your faction's languages. Note that this will allow very limited cross-faction communication through the mutual understanding of Pandaren, for the Pandaren, and Thalassian for Blood and Void Elves.
Ancient Dalaran Teleports
You can actually teleport to Dalaran Crater in Hillsbrad Foothills. In Scarlet Halls, the old Mists of Pandaria dungeon out in Tirisfal Glades, killing the final boss without him getting his Book Burner cast off will let you loot a book off a shelf on the right-hand side as you enter his room.
Once obtained, you can go to Endora Moorehead in Northrend's Dalaran and purchase the portal version. This is a limited-stock item, so check back if it is not there in an hour or two. Keep in mind that this is a fatal fall for anyone without a way to escape it. Enter the portal on a flying mount, or be prepared to Blink, Slow Fall, or Ice Block the fall.
Arcane Momentum
Taught by any Mage trainer, this allows you to change the behaviour of Blink and Shimmer. Instead of moving you 20 yards in the direction you are facing, it will instead move you 20 yards in the direction you are moving. It should be noted that this makes Blinking a knockback fairly useless, as you will be teleported 20 yards behind you, but some people find that an acceptable trade.
The trainer will also allow you to revert this change if you dislike it, so feel free to play around with it.
Mage Toys
Familiar Stone
Sold by Endora Moorehead in Northrend's Dalaran. A toy that conjures a stone in either arcane, fire, or frost flavours that summons a non-combat elemental of that nature. The stones do not bind, so you could give them out if you so choose.
Dalaran Initiates' Pin
Once again, sold by Endora Moorehead in Northrend's Dalaran. This is a limited stock item and may not be there when you check her; check back in an hour or two. This is a toy that will produce the Eye of Dalaran as a spell effect above your head for 5 minutes. It is a tribute to the historical Dalaran Brilliance spell, which was a cosmetic variant of Arcane Intellect, was sold by the same vendor but has been removed for a long time.
Glyph of Dalaran Brilliance returns the Dalaran Brilliance animation to Arcane Intellect, although not the icon.
Akazamzarak's Spare Hat
Obtained from Akazamzarak himself when you recruited him during the second half of the Legion Mage campaign. Allows you to simply pull a rabbit out of a hat on an hour cooldown.
Magical Saucer
Obtained from Uthel'nay in the Hall of the Guardians after you have obtained your class mount. This toy lets your non-combat pets sit on a magical saucer and even fly with you on your flying mounts.
Bipsi's Bobbing Berg
Obtained from Nat Pagle in Krasarang Wilds after getting Revered with the Anglers. While not a toy per se, it uses the same logic as the fishing raft toy that Nat Pagle sells, just with a Mage flavour. Jumping will increase your speed up to 270%, quickly decaying every second.
An advantage is that it has no cast time, unlike the fishing raft.
Mage-specific Locations
Alturus' Sanctum
Accessed during the questline for the class mount; this is a small room under Karazhan. Unnoticed by most, however, is the Bindstone on the table that allows you to set your Hearthstone to this room. It has a portal leading back up to Karazhan for easy mount farming and is a cute Mage-only place to set Hearth if you are not using it otherwise. This area is accessible even after completion of the quest, as the entrance portal does not despawn.
