Gearing your Assassination Rogue in The War Within
With the release of Season 2 of The War Within, the gear treadmill begins anew once more.
The War Within once again uses the Crest upgrade system that was introduced in Dragonflight. We recommend that you check out our dedicated page for more information on this gear upgrade system if you are not yet familiar with it:

BiS List for Assassination Rogue
This list contains the highest DPS setup from all sources for Assassination Rogue
In some non-Tier slots, a 675 iLvl Craft can technically be optimal since you can customize the secondary stats to your liking and get 2 embellished effects. A few 678 iLvl slots from Mythic Raid are the exception.
This list is by no means a replacement for simming yourself. Depending on your previous Great Vault choices and the gear you have available to yourself, your BiS gear might look different than this list in some spots.

Best Cyrce's Circlet Gems for Assassination Rogue
Cyrce's Circlet is a ring that was introduced in Patch 11.0.7 that you can
acquire by completing several activities on Siren Isle. The ring has 3
sockets, which can fit a different kind of gem each. There are four different gems
available for each of the three sockets, for a total of 12 gems, so there is
quite a bit of choice on what to socket. As it stands, this ring will continue
being BiS for all of Season 2, although we expect some tuning to happen to change
this sometime during Season 2.
These are generally considered to be the best gems, but it is highly recommended to sim yourself to figure out the best choices and combinations for your specific gear and the specific gems and other rings you already own:
- You will want to play this combination of gems in Raids and Mythic+:
Stormbringer's Runed Citrine,
Fathomdweller's Runed Citrine, and
Windsinger's Runed Citrine.
For more information on how to get the ring, as well as acquiring all of the different gems that you can possibly socket into it, check out our Cyrce's Circlet guide below!
Best Trinkets for Assassination Rogue in Season 2
There are a number of good trinkets available for Assassination Rogue in Season 2, from a variety of different sources. Some relevant ones to look for are:
House of Cards – The only viable high-ilvl on-use trinket in this season, this is a must play for any Assassination Rogue.
Eye of Kezan – A very strong passive trinket that procs regularly and allows for very high primary stat boosts.
Signet of the Priory – A very good alternative to House of Cards that is farmable through Mythic+, and can be better than House of Cards in some scenarios when other raid members play it alongside you.
Improvised Seaforium Pacemaker – A much less viable option to Eye of Kezan, but better than most of the others.
The Importance of "Simming Yourself" as a Assassination Rogue
With all the different layers of gearing currently available to players, it is impossible to cover all edge cases and individual recommendations in a guide. We therefore highly recommend simming your own character by using Raidbots. This website allows for precise and individualized recommendations that consider your exact talents, gear, trinket, and all the other layers of gearing that the game has to offer. Learning to use this tool is essential to maximizing your potential, as it is the only reliable way to get information on which piece of gear, enchant, gem, or trinket is the best for your character.
Droptimizer
The Droptimizer feature from Raidbots lets you identify which dungeons and Raid Bosses offer the highest DPS upgrades to you. It simulates all of the potential upgrades in a raid or a dungeon and lists the bosses/dungeons by rank order of how much DPS you can expect to gain from each of the items it drops. We have a guide for it that you can access using the link below.
Valorstones and Crest Upgrade Recommendations
These are some of the items you should prioritize on upgrading as high as possible early into the season:
- Your Mainhand dagger.
- Powerful trinkets like
House of Cards or
Eye of Kezan
- Items with a high stat budget, like your Chest, Helmet, or Legs.
- Embellished or other items with damaging procs.
These are not the only items worth upgrading, of course. They simply offer the highest DPS gain early into the tier when your upgrade currency is limited.
Professions and Crafted Gear
Professions are a great way to gear up with your optimal secondary stats, as generating specific secondary stat combinations is now possible when adding special items to the crafting process. With the heavily reworked crafting system in The War Within, exploring the new professions will help you gear up throughout the expansion, as you will be able to craft some Mythic Raid item-level pieces further down the line.
If you want to find out more about professions, make sure to check out our The War Within Profession guide!
As your ability to craft items will be time-gated in the initial stages of The War Within, we highly recommend getting a Main Hand weapon as soon as possible, unless you can reliably get one elsewhere. Once you have a good weapon, work on Embellished Items next, and then craft whichever pieces you do not have high-item-level versions of yet.
Embellished Items
Up to two of your crafted items can be Embellished. This is a similar concept as Unique-Equipped, as you can only wear two items that have the Embellished status. Some crafted items, many of which have powerful procs or beneficial effects by default, are considered Embellished. You can also add Embellishments from a variety of professions to any crafted item, adding the effect to this item either when creating it or at a later stage.
As there is a lot of competition for Embellishments, you will have to pick and choose the two strongest ones for your overall DPS output. Most of them provide very similar DPS benefits, even if the effects are entirely different. The two best choices for this are:
- For Raid:
Darkmoon Sigil: Ascension on a weapon and
Writhing Armor Banding
- For Mythic+: Two
Dawnthread Lining items.
It is recommended to sim yourself to find out what works best, and if you also play the other 2 Rogue specs, you might want to pick Embellishments that work well for all of them.
Adding Sockets to Gear
You can add sockets to your necklace and rings by using a
Magnificent Jeweler's Setting
on them. This will allow you to get up to six sockets on your gear.
You can also add sockets to Helmets, Belts, Bracers, Necks and Rings with
the S.A.D. consumable that you can get if you do not select any of the choices in
your Great Vault. Not picking a choice will grant you tokens, six of which can be
traded in for the
S.A.D. item that allows you to add a socket to any piece
of gear you acquired in Season 2.
Stat Priorities
Which gems and enchants to use heavily depends on your current stat priority. As previously mentioned, this priority can shift and change whenever you acquire new gear, so simming yourself to figure out the best use of your newly acquired socket is highly recommended. The general rule is to prioritize Critical Strike and Mastery on as many pieces of gear as possible, and prioritizing those stats for any consumables as well.
Season 2 Set - Liberation of Undermine
If given a choice, try to prioritize the Helmet, Shoulder, Gloves, and Legs slots for this. However, getting the Chest to complete one of the bonuses is still better than any other gearing choice.
