Frost Death Knight DPS Gear and Best in Slot — The War Within (11.1.0)
On this page, you will find the best gear and best in slot items for your Frost Death Knight in World of Warcraft The War Within (11.1.0).
BiS Gear Guide for Frost Death Knight
Welcome to our Gear and BiS Page for Frost Death Knight for The War Within Season 2. Check this page to learn everything you need to know about gearing a Frost Death Knight, including the BiS Gear from all sources, Raiding, and Mythic+, information on the best Trinkets, Tier Sets, and much more.
We have three BiS lists below, each detailing the best gear you can obtain
from a specific source. We have the overall list, a raid-only one, and, finally,
a mythic+-only list. They are all optimised to give you the highest single target
DPS. The various builds we run do we have somewhat different stat priorities, meaning
that the BiS list will be slightly different. What is shown below corresponds to the
DW Shattering Blade build.
Cyrce's Circlet is included in these lists as it currently is a very
powerful ring. Blizzard is likely to nerf it however so make sure to
check back if they do so for an updated lis.
When it comes to weapon choice, Dual-wield is better than 2-handed in pretty much all scenarios. There are edge cases where a large ilvl difference can make 2-handed better but this is not relevant for the BiS list.

Best Cyrce's Circlet Gems for Frost Death Knight
The Cyrce's Circlet continues to be BIS in 11.1, even when at an ilvl disadvantage to other rings. As a general rule, you want to play the following:
Windsinger's Runed Citrine,
Stormbringer's Runed Citrine and
Fathomdweller's Runed Citrine for both raid and Mythic+.
For more information on how to get the ring, as well as acquiring all of the different gems that you can possibly socket into it, check out our Cyrce's Circlet guide below!
Gearing a Frost Death Knight
If you have a new piece of gear for which you need gems and enchant advice, you can find everything on our dedicated page below.
While gearing up, item level will be your primary target. Strength is our best stat, and you shouldn't focus too much on your secondaries at first. Once you start to receive gear pieces with the same ilvl but different stats, that is when you want to start optimizing your stat distribution. Generally, Frost Death Knights want to prioritize Crit, Haste and Mastery! We recommend simming your character to determine what upgrade is best for you! For a more detailed explanation, you can read the Simulations page.
Simming your character is far and beyond the best way to determine if a piece of gear is, in fact, an upgrade. The trick is knowing how to do it in a way that produces reliable results. If you follow the Simulations guide page, you can use this to have a more practical gearing guide than simply following a BiS list.
Season 2 Tier Set for Frost Death Knight
Out 11.1 tier set focuses heavily on increasing our Frost Strike
and
Glacial Advance damage, as well as firing off free
Frostscythes.
It has good synergy with
Shattering Blade builds due to this reason,
making them better than
Breath of Sindragosa builds once we obtain the 4-set.
The 11.1 tier set is a really good set for the Frost Death Knight, seeing a 15% gain with the 4-set but only 3% with the 2-set. This means that it is worthwhile to swap out your previous tier set once you gain the new 4-set, almost regardless of ilvl on the new pieces.
You only need 4 pieces out of 5 to get both set bonuses. We recommend you get all items except for the Head, due to the Head having Versatility which we ideally want to avoid. Check out the BiS List for more information.
Frost Death Knight Gear Upgrades in The War Within
The War Within has a powerful upgrade system for your gear where you use Valorstones
and Crests to upgrade your gear. These are obtainable from practically
all forms of content in the game.
For more information on the new Gear Upgrades system, check out our dedicated page for it below.
Best Items to Upgrade for Frost Death Knight in The War Within
There are three primary items to upgrade as a Frost Death Knight:
- Weapon
- Trinket
- Head/ Chest/ Legs
With how the upgrade system works with Crests being the limited currency, you want to upgrade the most powerful slots you can. For Frost Death Knights, this will be your weapon (Attack Power scales with weapon ilvl). You ideally want to use your crests to craft a weapon ASAP since it is also part of our BiS list. Start out with it in your Mainhand slot and only swap when your non-crafted weapon ends up a higher ilvl. After you have crafted your weapon, and upgraded your other one, move on to trinkets and high-stat slot items like Legs, Helm, Chest, etc.
Notable Crafted Gear
Frost wants to run Darkmoon Sigil: Ascension on a
Charged Slicer (Crit Mastery)
as well as
Writhing Armor Banding on a
Consecrated Cloak (Haste Crit) as our
crafted items in the BiS set. For Mythic+, swap to
Blessed Weapon Grip on the weapon
and
Dawnthread Lining on the cloak.
When it comes to your other crafted slots, we are only wearing two crafted items in our BiS setup (due to the ilvl loss). Use crafting as a way of "filling in the gaps" in your gear, trying to find the best value upgrade in a slot where you already do not have a good piece. Sim yourself to find the best option for you!
Overall Top Trinkets
Frost aims to use one on-use Trinket as well as one passive one.
In The War Within Season 2, our best on-use is House of Cards
followed by
Funhouse Lens and
Signet of the Priory. Funhouse Lens here is a drop from Delves
and can be obtained at max 665 ilvl. Still, it is only 1% behind House of Cards.
For our passive trinket,
Eye of Kezan is our best option. Again, this is a scaling trinket which
gains power the longer the encounter is. For alternatives, we have
Improvised Seaforium Pacemaker,
which also ends up being better on fights shorter than 4 minutes. Finally, running double passive trinkets
are not that bad. The lack of good on-use trinkets mean that setups such as Eye of Kezan + Improvised Seaforium Pacemaker
lags the BiS setup by only 0.8%.
You will notice a significant amount of Delve trinkets high up in this list. They can be obtained at 665 ilvl via vault drops and perform very well compared to higher ilvl options.
Best Trinkets for Frost Death Knight in The War Within Season 2
Raiding Trinket Tier List for Frost Death Knight
This Trinket Tier List is single-target biased, as this tends to be the most important aspect of Raiding. Other aspects of the trinkets are also baked into the rankings, such as their ease of use.
S-Tier
House of Cards - Our best on-use for 4+min encounters. The 1.5min cooldown synergises really well with our burst window.
Eye of Kezan Our best passive for 4+min encounters which tends to cover most of the raid.
A-Tier
Signet of the Priory - Tied with
Funhouse Lens as our second-best on-use and far more obtainable at a higher ilvl.
Funhouse Lens - Obtained from Delves, this trinket fits nicely into our 1.5min CD cycle. It is our best trinket on fights shorter than 4 minutes since it does not ramp like our S-tier on-use.
Treacherous Transmitter - Even at 639 ilvl (39 lower than max in new patch) this is a great trinket that will be hard to replace.
Improvised Seaforium Pacemaker - Solid passive trinket that is solid on shorter fights.
Mechano-Core Amplifier - Solid passive trinket obtained from Delves. Value depends slightly on stat distribution.
Suspicious Energy Drink - Solid passive trinket obtained from Delves. Value depends slightly on stat distribution.
Reverb Radio - Passive trinket which provides a nice amount of Haste. Value depends slightly on stat distribution.
B-Tier
Shadow-Binding Ritual Knife - Delve trinket that works surprisingly well as a passive trinket. Close to our other A-tier options.
Remote Guidance Device - On-use raw damage trinket that deals a reasonable amount of damage.
Sigil of Algari Concordance - Okay passive trinket but the proc ends up being mediocre.
Zee's Thug Hotline - Summoning member of the Good Squad is of course an awful lot of fun but they unfortunately do not bring enough to the table...
Razdunk's Big Red Button - On-use raw damage trinket that deals a reasonable amount of damage.
C-Tier
Viscera of Coalesced Hatred
Torq's Big Red Button
Geargrinder's Spare Keys
Mister Lock-N-Stalk
Ravenous Honey Buzzer
Grim Codex
Ratfang Toxin
Garbagemancer's Last Resort
Papa's Prized Putter
Turbo-Drain 5000
Remnant of Darkness
Noggenfogger Ultimate Deluxe
Amorphous Relic
Mythic+ Trinket Tier List for Frost Death Knight
This Trinket Tier List is more AoE focused as Mythic+ values AoE damage significantly more. We still look for a good balance between Single Target and AoE though! We generally look to run double passive in Mythic+ as the available on-use trinkets aren't that great.
S-Tier
Eye of Kezan - Our best passive for Mythic+. Even if it is ramping in nature, it provides great value overall. It is especially good when you can consistently pull packs back-to-back so that you do not drop too many stacks.
Improvised Seaforium Pacemaker - Solid passive trinket that ends up being BiS in combination with Eye of Kezan.
A-Tier
Mechano-Core Amplifier - Second-best passive trinket in Mythic+. It tends to either give us Crit or Versatility if we have the right stat setup.
Suspicious Energy Drink - Obtain from Delves, this is our third-best passive trinket in Mythic+. The Mastery ends up being great value for us.
Treacherous Transmitter - Even at 639 ilvl (39 lower than max in new patch) this is a great trinket that will be hard to replace.
Reverb Radio - Passive trinket which provides a nice amount of Haste..
House of Cards - Tied best on-use for Mythic+ but a lot more easily obtainable compared to Funhouse Lens.
Funhouse Lens - Obtained from Delves, this on-use trinket fits nicely into our 1.5min CD cycle. The reason it is not S-tier in Mythic+ is because it provides either Haste or Crit, stats that are not that powerful in AoE.
Shadow-Binding Ritual Knife - Delve trinket that works surprisingly well as a passive trinket, being really close to our other A-tier options.
B-Tier
Signet of the Priory - Solid on-use for Mythic+.
Grim Codex - On-use raw damage trinket that is pretty good in Mythic+.
Geargrinder's Spare Keys - On-use raw damage trinket that ends up dealing quite a good amount of damage in AoE.
C-Tier
Zee's Thug Hotline
Remote Guidance Device
Sigil of Algari Concordance
Razdunk's Big Red Button
Viscera of Coalesced Hatred
Torq's Big Red Button
Mister Lock-N-Stalk
Ravenous Honey Buzzer
Ratfang Toxin
Garbagemancer's Last Resort
Papa's Prized Putter
Turbo-Drain 5000
Remnant of Darkness
Noggenfogger Ultimate Deluxe
Amorphous Relic
Stats
Many people overthink the distribution of their secondary stats. An important thing to remember is that a higher quantity of stats is usually better than a better quality of stats. Because of this, wearing higher item-level gear with worse stats tends to be better than lower item-level gear with great stats. Keep this in mind when considering gear. For more information on stats, please refer to our dedicated page.
For Frost specifically, we aim for a good balance between Crit, Mastery and Haste. For a closer look at stats, please see the below article./p>
Jewellery
For neck and ring pieces, you can generally afford to drop 5-10 ilevels in most cases to avoid our worst stat: Versatility. That said, you should always sim yourself to see what is better as the secondary stat diminishing returns can still change your ideal setup. It can be useful to wear crafted jewelry due to how you can control the stats; just remember that you cannot craft the maximum ilvl possible!
